That’s fine and appreciated - not my intention to shoot the messenger at all.

FWIW this piece in the Bel Tel (paywalled unfortunately) seems to be the ultimate source of the conversation. I can’t read the whole thing to know if it was just speculation as to what it might mean or the journalist concerned had actual sources within the BBC to know this had been actually under active consideration.

Very interesting that streaming doesn't seem to bother RTE sports coverage, but encrypted satellite does !

The article was written to give the impression the author was privy to a conversation going on internally at the BBC.

No intention of diverting thread to NI’s politics but some knowledge of it is required to understand why this particular journalist was writing that way.

If people want BBC One London on Freesat channel 101, just leave the Postcode bit blank on set up. At least on my LG. All the variations are in the 900's, BBC One NI goes to 966. That would mean ITV instead of UTV, but some people can get UTV on the aerial. There are no other variations of ITV other than UTV and STV on Freesat.

Yes there is if you input a postcode, I have a Scottish one on my Freesat, so I can access Scottish football.

I think the previous poster did mention STV, to be fair.

And to be less fair I think the other ITV regions are there - just that you only get the one appropriate to your area on Freesat, and London, depending on your postcode selection. These days they are all labelled “ITV1” without a regional identifier and have been for some years. This is very important to ITV from an advertising sales point of view, plus there would be issues in Wales if ITV1 Wales wasn’t available.

I think there are two versions of BBC 1/2 NI and Three/Four on satellite. Is one for the Irish EPG and therefore could be geo blocked on sky at least?

Yes there is, there are ROI versions of each BBC channel on the Irish Sky EPG, though they are still FTA and therefore still can’t be geoblocked.

The ROI versions have no programming differences but lack the red button/iPlayer prompt.

Will the iplayer app for radio still be available or is that going too?

    Separate and unrelated issue.

The original story re BBC NI News has been long debunked.

I have added a Mod Note to the OP/thread title which I should have done long ago and anyone else tempted to drag this thread back up should bear in mind that the BBC have long denied the original story was ever a thing.
