Looking to buy a home weather station for my father, retired engineer living by the sea in Wicklow. We'd like something reliable with barometer, wind, and rainfall sensors, and ideally Wi-Fi upload to Weather Underground. What are people using locally that stands up to Irish coastal conditions?

Davis weather stations are very reliable. I have one of these since 2009 and it's still going strong. I had to replace a humidity sensor some years ago but it was straightforward and easy enough to do.

I don't live near the coast so I can't specifically say if they're durable enough for coastal conditions but I'd guess they are well up to it.

They're not the cheapest but the quality is there.

Thanks for that. Appreciate the info. I was thinking of something under 200. Its an idle thought I had last night for a summer project to do, but couldnt justify 500+.

Ecowitt stations will fit your budget. Look, I agree Davis stations are great, but for your budget if you want a station to give you instant pretty reliable data, try these. You can get them on Amazon or direct. Now, as to coastal site, obviously salt will be a issue, you can engage with ecowitt direct and ask. I'd imagine they are fine. I've had one since the covid lock down, must be five years now. The temperature sensor gave up the ghost this year but I talked to them online, gave them the station type, and they recommended the replacement. Only cost about fifteen euro and not terribly difficult to replace yourself. All good again.

Cool, get it mounted correctly and set her up, you'll have your own station online quickly.

Are you happy with the ecowitt?

I want to get a station to mount on an exposed outbuilding without power but I keep seeing comments about wind causing the rainfall to be significantly undercounted. I get a lot of sideways rain here!

Rain and wind are very hard to get right as an amateur as both need very specific exposure to get right. You need a wide open space with little obstructions which are very hard to get unless you can dedicate a largish open field to it. I would take rain and wind measurements as being indicative and comparative (to previous readings you have made in the same area) but still very much worthwhile. You are still recording your local weather after all.
