i went googling that - because one of the locations is very probably near where i live. some reports say the flooding on ballymun road was due to a burst water main, which would be quite a coincidence.

Theres an amateur Ecowitt station near Brittas reporting an event total of 132mm. Probably overcooking it, but its still a LOT of rain.

In other words … A normal dull day would this be in the west 😉

the serious flooding in parts of the city compared to the relatively small amount at Casement suggests it was a very localised thunderstorm as they tend to be.

I don’t think it would be an exaggeration to say that the badly affected parts of the city possibly received double what Dublin Airport got. It could be compared to the well documented ‘Mount Merrion storm’ in 1963.

    Yesterday was…

Dunsany's wettest July day on record (since automated station began in 2006) with 55.4mm beating 48.4mm on 25th July 2013. It was its wettest day for any month since 2nd August 2014 (56.4mm). Its wettest on record is 6th September 2010 with 65.0mm. It had a manual climate station back in the day with records from 1963-2007 but these values are 09-09 and I don't have the equivalent 09-09 reading for yesterday to directly compare. Just for curiosity, the wettest July day at the manual was 31st July 1972 with 42.1mm so it absolutely smashes that anyway and its wettest of any day was 5th November 2000 with 73.6mm.

Casement's wettest July day on record with 50.9mm, its previous record was 41.4mm on 15th July 1973. This makes it the wettest day here since 2nd August 2014 similar to Dunsany when it had 57.2mm. Its wettest day on record is 11th June 1993 with 108.6mm. The infamous 24th October 2011 was 82.2mm, 2nd wettest day.

Phoenix Park's wettest July day on record (since automated station began in 2003) with 48.1mm beating 36.0mm on 22nd July 2023. It was its wettest day for any month since 2nd August 2014 which had 65.0mm. Its wettest day on record was 24th October 2011 with 71.3mm. The wettest available July day (since 1941) at the manual Phoenix Park station was 3rd July 1992 with 53.1mm which was brought by an active cold front bringing thunderstorms, bear in mind again this is a 09-09 total so not directly comparable with yesterday's value.

Dublin Airport's 2nd wettest July day on record with 40.3mm only beaten by 2nd July 2009 with 42.4mm. It had wetter days as recently as 1st March 2024 (the day of the marginal Dublin snow event) and 5th August 2023 (Storm Antoni). Its wettest day on record is 11th June 1993 with 92.6mm.

Dunsany now currently sitting at 52mm of rainfall but that's only as far as July 20th, 2 days ago before the 24 hour deluge started so this will be close to 110mm by the time it updates next.

Just looking at other stations across the country baring in mind yesterdays rainfall is not added yet, a few southern and western stations are close to 100mm or well over it. Athenry sticks out with close to 135mm of rainfall for July so far. Eastern stations in the 40 to 55mm range are likely to be close to 100mm by the time it all gets updated so with a few exceptions July is looking like a very wet month indeed. Thankfully the remainder of July is trending a bit dryer although there is an unsettled and cooling signal developing again from July 28th into 1st week of August with a taste of autumn if this mornings models verify. ECM looking particularly autumnal.

Weird.. I found yesterday a fairly run of the mill wet day in north Dublin, maybe there was lots of heavy rain overnight that I missed but it definitely didn't feel like anything exceptional

Most of the heavy rain seem to miss Dublin City, yesterdays radar had the heaviest rain from Northern Ireland into Monaghan, down into Meath and Kildare etc, looked much ligher over the city.

I'm in D13 so not all that far from the airport, from Syran's stats it was the second wettest July day on record there so I'd assume roughly the same where I am

Agree, I got 45mm which is a lot but not exceptional. I got roughly the same amount on June 14th.
So that big thunderstorm one Sunday afternoon in July 1995 doesn’t make it into the record books obviously.

    Sunday 16th July 1995 was Dublin Airport's 3rd wettest July day with 39.0mm after 2nd July 2009 and yesterday 21st July 2025.

Yes most of it was overnight and early morning. Heaviest falls were around 5-7am when hourly totals were around 9-11mm.

Last Tue 15th Casement recorded 11.1mm rain, no hourly rainfall above 2.5mm. Yet multiple businesses around Liffey Valley and in Lucan had to close due to water pouring through their ceilings, such was the severity of the downpours. Lucan also suffered several flooded roads.

It's very possible you didn't get the same intensity of rain as the airport.

Thanks for that, I remember it because I was enjoying the sunshine in Wexford when I was told the Leinster hurling final at Croker was delayed because of thunder and lightning and torrential rain! That 39mm must have fallen in a very short period of time so obviously a very intense storm which I missed!
