Surely we're done in attack for now? Salah, Wirtz, Gakpo, Ekitike, Diaz, Chiesa, Nunez, and potentially Frimpong used there too (and that's before thinking about some very talented kids). Even if two of those leave, we're still in good shape I think. If we lose 3, then maybe - but if, say, Diaz and Nunez went, I think we'd just hang onto Chiesa for the year.

I think you need 6 and chiesa can't be counted.

I think ideal is 5 good options who rotate across the 3 positions, and then maybe some depth option (like an Elliott, or Frimpong or Szoboslai who can move up). Whenever we have more than that, lads just sit on the bench without ever playing, and are then totally rusty in the one or two games they're called upon… Minamino, Origi after Jota joined, Chiesa etc. I'm just not sure there's room for 6 senior specialist forwards.

Amazed that people still think Núñez could stay

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 34,321 ✭✭✭✭~Rebel~

Does anyone? I'd say he's the one absolutely nailed on to leave because of that 'one more game' clause. Even if we don't sell him, he'll go on loan i'd say.

Is ngumoha potentially 1 of the 6?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭gibgodsman

Considering there are 3 in that 7 what are very likely to leave I would hope not, 4 attackers for a season where we 100% lose Salah for a month would be madness. Diaz, Chiesa and Nunez look nailed on to leave

As I said in that post; "If we lose 3, then maybe".

It's so much bloody churn after a league winning season though, I really don't want that much change. For some bit of consistency even just on the training ground I think it'd be worth holding onto Diaz unless a truly ridiculous offer came in, or hanging onto Chiesa.

    Seen plenty of comments

Ian Doyle in the Echo yesterday after he scored a hattrick against Stoke:

"Nunez, then, may not be finished at Anfield just yet. Regardless, the Uruguayan is sending a timely reminder of why Liverpool made him a record buy in the first place."

Basically wrote that he's pretty much out the door but circumstances might give him a chance of staying and loads of people online saying sure give him a chance next season

    I simply cant see it

Ah sorry, I thought you meant on here. Yeah, can't see it either.

How did we get Ekitike for an initial £69m when Newcastle had an apparent £70m bid rejected? Either that was their total bid including add-ons or we stole him from them for less than they offered.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,388 ✭✭✭✭8-10

My conspiracy hat tells me that they had no interest in him but when we started to unsettle Isak they called up Frankfurt who said we'd pay £69m and they said OK well officially bid £70m to send us a message

That bid from them made no sense

Ach we have seen plenty of players through the years (voronin etc)banging in loads of goals in preseason against weaker opposition or teams trying something different in preseason,it isn't a true indication , saying that if the right offer isn't on the table it might be worth paying the extra money to keep him as an option,he might click with wirtz, often it's the case that players aren't effective unless a certain player is playing with them.

I have said it here before that I thought before last season started, I thought the team was spent and we should have invested. Then that team went on to win the PL to debunk my theory. Honestly never expected it from Slots first season.

But, I would think we are cashing in the good chips/ good will now that we are champions and can almost pick our replacements for that team. Players want to be where they can win silverware. I can imagine it would be more difficult to get players we want if we ended up either out of CL places or just scrapping through. If this sudden big spend works out, we could be building a young team to go for a good few seasons. I hope that’s the case.

In the first half of the Stoke game it was a box midfield, Nyoni and Jones occupied the deeper positions. Szoboszlai lined up at full back but his position was fluid. He was wide on the right or occupying his usual position with runs into the box. There was good link up between him and Wirtz feeding balls through to Nunez, Ngumoha and Salah.

Newcastle tried to sign him the summer he joined PSG and Frankfurt. By all accounts he's someone they really liked.

I would be happy to give Nunez another season, and hold on to Diaz, Elliot, and Chiesa.

    New hair, new Nunez.

I can't see us signing another forward and I think it will take a while before Ekitike starts to play regularly, and good to have competition. He also looks like Nunez 2.0 to me, same type of player.

We need a CB as a further signing.

It's a touch concerning that people are already saying Ekitike will have to be eased in and not sure how much he will feature at the start. I get he's only 23 and coming to a new league/country etc.. It's because of the price tag, it's massive money and you kind of expect for that fee that you're getting a ready made superstar. Unfortunately no such guarantees in this day and age of humongous transfer fees. It will be a stick to beat him and the club with, hopefully he has the right mentality for starters and settles in quickly.

    New hair, new Nunez.

Ah man, you were so close to greatness there all ya had to do was...

    New hair, New-nez! 😉

Someone mentioned the concern over too much churn after winning the league. IMO, it's very telling "where" we are seeing that churn. I can't remember exactly how Slot put it but he made a comment (before we had the title wrapped up) that we don't win games easily. Even though we tallied a huge number of goals, there were a lot of moments in the season where we needed big saves or huge defensive mentality to hold on to 3 points. Considering that 29 of the 86 goals were Salah, I can see how Slot wants new attacking options. Every signing so far points to keeping the attack fresh in order to put teams to the sword and avoid nervous final minutes holding a one goal advantage. Frimpong and Kerkez are essential to replace TAA and Robertson for how we play. Ekitike and Wirtz pushing Nunez and Diaz out… does that churn hurt the squad?

Assuming Nunez, Robertson, Diaz and Elliot all leave, the core is still there… Allison, Salah, VVD, Gravenberch, Alexis, Gakpo, Szobo, Konate. Add the regular squad players, Jones, Endo, Bradley, Tsimikas, Gomez.

A jigsaw with one missing piece is easy to solve. This squad is now a complicated puzzle, the pieces are there, but putting it together could take a while.

I can't see it as a case of this is the best 11, that play week in week out. There will be a lot of rotation, not just every match day, but in games.

Sobo is no bench warmer. He's an unsung hero, does all the work no one notices, until he's not there to do it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,529 ✭✭✭dogbert27

But that's the point. We don't want a best 11 plus subs. We want a best 15 to 16 where there is no drop in quality when rotated

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,529 ✭✭✭dogbert27

I hope France call Ekitike up to give him his first cap.

He's eligible for Cameroon too so come on France, we don't want to lose another player to the African Nations!

Definitely need a CB alright. That was our biggest failing after we won the league last time - Lovren left, and we went into the next season with only 3 options. Now, the way things transpired with every one of them getting long term injuries it actually wouldn't have mattered much, but we definitely know that 3 CBs is not enough - especially when two of them are injury prone to varying degrees. Need a 4th of a standard that can play regularly.

Depending on the outgoings, I'd be happy out if that CB was our last signing of the summer.

Agree with above i think a CB is a must now…no point having all this attacking talent and we're playing Endo/Mc as centre halves to cover ala Henderson/Fab back in the day.

Am i crazy to still dream we could land Isak? I dont even know how he would fit in this team now assuming the Hugo move goes through but god dammit it would be glorious.

Technically our £69M may have been equal to or more than their £70M. Remember that the actual bids/transfers are made in Euros, despite Sky insisting on reporting unwieldy STG equivalents on the day and holding to these conversions as fixed amounts months later.

(The STG to Euro FX rate has varied between 1:15 and 1:21 this summer)

The position of Frankfurt was that they did not need to sell Ekitike having received €70m for Marmoush in January. In June, the Frankfurt CEO made it clear that they would not sell without his release clause of €100m being triggered. That is when Chelsea turned their attention to Joao Pedro and sealed the deal while Newcastle were waiting for Brighton to drop their price.

Last week Newcastle offered €80m with no add-ons which was immediately rejected. The Liverpool offer which was accepted is €79m plus €12m in add-ons.

Money is tight at Newcastle and the £70m offered for Ekitike is believed to be the limit of their budget. It could prove to be a poor transfer window for them as deals continue to slip away from them. To date they have missed out on Liam Delap, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, Hugo Ekitike and Dean Huijsen. They spent weeks haggling with Burnley over a small difference in the valuation of James Trafford, now there is strong speculation that Man City will activate the £40m buy back clause so Burnley have increased their asking price from £30m. Brentford were adamant that they were not going to sell both Mbeumo and Wissa so Newcastle may have to look elsewhere for a striker. Marc Guehi is the only player they have made an approach for that is definitely still available.

He can't switch International allegiance now AFAIK. Yes he plays at U21 level for France but to switch allegiance you need to apply to do so before your 21st birthday. I think we're good on avoiding AFCON problems.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭gibgodsman

Incorrect, the U21 thing means they can switch when they want as long as they haven't played more than 3 games since turning 21, the rule still remains if they have not played a non friendly match 3 times then they can still switch

Its needs to be done though, we haven't signed a forward (cant include chiesa) since 22/23, yes we walked the league but we can't stand still.
