Latest guidance and radar support a warning for severe localized flooding developing rapidly overnight in parts of Leinster and east Ulster, in particular small river drainage systems originating over higher terrain. It's quite possible that 50 to 70 mm of rain could fall in parts of the following counties: Dublin, Wicklow, Wexford, Carlow, Kildare, Meath, Louth, Cavan, Monaghan, and in N.I., Armagh, Down, Antrim including Belfast. The cause of this heavy rainfall is frontal convergence to the northwest of slow-moving low pressure located over the southern to central Irish Sea. Some thunderstorm activity may also develop especially over upslope areas in northeast winds of 20 to 40 km/hr.

Smaller river drainage from the Dublin-Wicklow mountains and the Mourne range in co. Down may rapidly overflow stream banks overnight. Be prepared to evacuate and/or move valuable property that can be placed in a safer location, based on previous history of flooding in these areas. On flatter ground, the main hazard will be ponding of excess water not draining off fast enough to prevent buildups of water in fields and urban areas. As the worst of the rain will be towards the end of the overnight period, conditions in low light will be especially dangerous but the morning commute could be moderately to severely affected.

Pouring here M.T, in south coast Dublin, but not substantially different from some previous downpours. No sign of sparks at all. Do you think there's a bit of lightning on the East Coast tonight? (I don't think so, but you usually have something precise and different…)

Just a slight chance, perhaps around 0600h. Heavier falls so far a bit inland and probably between reporting sites on hilly terrain. Dunsany has already had about 20 mm in 4-5 hours.

Only spits of rain here, in fact the rain line limit is about 15-20 miles from me and looks like staying there. (Offaly)

Very heavy rain for the last hour, persistent with 5 minute downpours, no sign of thunder.

Streams running down at the road kerbing but shores handling it so far, Dublin 7.

I was thinking the same but I do remember terrible flooding in the Donnycarney area of Dublin one night in July 2009, I doubt if last night was worse than that night.

Ya think that July 2009 night had over 75mm alright. Could be wrong. The famous wet Summer period of 2007 to 2012.

This one is about 56mm n counting there but intensity slowly easing

close to a months worth of rain has fallen here in Meath since last night. We got close to 100mm of rainfall in June and after today is done we'll be close to 100mm of rainfall for July as well in what is now turning into a very wet summer indeed, although there has been some dry days this summer the rainfall totals are well above average.

Hopefully the final week of July turns alot dryer after this deluge.

Someone posted it this morning on Facebook, those trees do look a bit bare now that you say it.

Great spot(Not the actual pitch), defo winter!

Ye have to wonder why do people post something claiming it was taken this morning, I never thought of looking at the trees themselves, just focused on the waterlogged pitch. Easy to see how it can happen tho as the Boyne regularly bursts it's banks during heavy rainfall periods such as todays.

Theres another spot on the old N3 bridge south of Navan which also turns into a mini lake during heavy rainfall spells, That's probably flooded today.

It's lightened off here at Dunshaughlin, narrowly avoiding a very heavy pulse of rain just to my west which I'm sure Dunsany is sitting under that heavy pulse. I'm guessing when Met Eireann update the stats for Dunsany tomorrow it will be around 105-115mm of rainfall for July.

dublin northside here. despite all the rain, the garden flooded less than usual (we've a culverted stream apparently under our back garden, or under the garden behind, so the water table can often reach the surface). i guess the water table was fairly low.

From the RTE website - that's the local park near me (Kilbogget) here where i often go jogging, never ever seen it flood so badly. The Swans must be wondering how their pond got so big!

I wonder how Duleek is doing, that place always gets flooded really badly during heavy extended rain events.

that was some rain around dublin last night, then this morning.

the amount of clowns with driving early this morning with no lights on along the m50, ***ing moronic and reckless to think they didnt even think about putting their lights on, " oh its ok - my dash lights up, that means my headlights are on right ? " idiots.

the surface water was the worst id seen in a while too.

well done to the other countless morons braking when hitting large pools of water - where the kfuc did they learn to drive?

15th July 1973 44.7mm (09-09). To directly compare with today's total, the 00-00 total for that day was 41.4mm.

Different world here north Offaly, well in terms of rain. 0.5mm since midnight. It's pretty dull and dreary but not wet.

Yes that was a thunderstorm (2nd July 2009). Dublin Airport had 42mm fall that day with 26.5mm of this in an hour alone (a record hourly total for the airport). Casement's total wasn't as high at a modest 22mm. The below quote taken directly from a publication on Flood Info in regards to it.

Ballymun Road, Collins Avenue East, Richmond Road in Drumcondra and Botanic Avenue were all impassable due to flooding in the early morning. All road around Dublin Airport were flooded for a period in the early morning, but all flights operated as normal.

The DART service was suspended in the morning between Dalkey and Booterstown with the line under up to 2 feet of water.

A number of properties on Clanmoyle Road, Donnycarney had to be evacuated due to flooding.
