When I was 16 I was an ardent socialist and follower of SF. If I could have voted I'd have voted left in every possible category.

Now, and to be honest since my early 20's, I'm a right wing capitalist. I'd be ashamed of my opinions of 16-18 year old me. At that ages your brain is still developing and thus the voting age should not be extended to 16-18 year olds. What does a 16 year old living at home and going to school know about the world. I appreciate there are edge cases and to those they will have to wait to the already too low 18, unfortunately.

i was raised by a socialist so voted as such in my teens, ive slowly moved more centrists with age, leaving me to vote almost the same or similar as my teens, so, possible much of a muchness, id advocate for younger voting age, but very unlikely it would happen under the current government as it could undermine their own position of continual governance and power

It would make little difference. Adds about 120,000 to the electorate and my guess is about 35% would vote, assuming they added themselves to the electoral role.

Might favour FF & FG as their parents would be more likely to vote

So your argument is that because you voted differently when young versus as you got older - young people shouldn't get the vote?

I'd definitely like to see younger people engaging with politics more here and perhaps giving them the right to vote younger is a part of that

I don't think it would shift the needle left, in fact my biggest concern would be some moron like Conor McGregor getting voted in by appealing to the "alpha" male teens

If the government wanted to do something to improve voter turnout and participation then they should allow postal or eee early voting so that working people have more of a chance to vote

I think as a population we're extremely apathetic to the whole political process and generally disengage from it. That's probably something which really should be addressed more urgently

It changes a lot if there is ballot box stuffing going on.

Your brain isnt fully mature at 16. Until you can clearly remember the actions of the two previous governments you shouldnt be voting. Younger people are easier to sway with social media rather than remembering what candidates said and what they did in the past.

That is how I vote, what did a candidate say and what they did or their voting record in the Dail. Then there is the local issues of fixing roads and what not. Past performance is evidence of future outcomes…….

Thats a real issue (not your example specifically) but a protest vote/voting in an ejet.

FF/FG/SF have basically ran the country for years with no real changes ever being made. Regardless of who's in charge there is always a scandel whether it be the bike shed, RTE or something else - no one is ever punished regardless of the government. Now thats mainly due to no viable alternatives but its still true.

For a disillusioned 21 year old with no house prospects, struggling to make ends meet I can imagine them thinking 'nothing ever changes so f*ck it, lets vote X in'.

They are only opening voting up to younger people because older people are so fed up with the parties not many bother.

Wake me up when it's all over.

SocDems looking like absolute clowns endorsing voting at 16 "because modern teenagers are like sooo mature", whilst also campaigning to limit social media access until those same teens turn 16, "because their young minds are too impressionable".

And when it goes to 16, then what? Why not 14, or 10, or 6 years of age?

I don't care that people change politically as they go from young people to old.

What I do care about is that people under 18 remain children. They remain the responsibility of their parents or the state. They cannot marry, they cannot enter into contracts.

As a society we bemoan the premature loss of childhood through the tsunami of information that is so accessible to kids. And let's be clear, it IS a bad thing. Bad for their mental health, bad for their futures.

So, let kids be kids for as long as we can. Let the Brits do what they will, we will do what we will. And polling on the issue for years now has shown that there is nowhere near a majority here in favour of the constitutional change that would be necessary, by a referendum, to lower the voting age to 16. And so it will not happen in Ireland.

16 year old's today are light years ahead of the teenager's we were, I would support their voice being heard and it being a positive move into more active voter engagement as they grow older. By the time they are 18 a lot of them feel totally ignored at this point, so why would they engage now. Bring it on.

If you reduce the voting age to 16, you are implying that a 16 year old is a fully competent adult.

In this case, the 16 year old should be permitted to drink alcohol, drive a car (not at the same time!), get married, adopt children, join the police or army, get a mortgage, gamble, etc.

It amazes me that in many US states that adults are not permitted to consume alcohol.

you probably just don’t have the life experience or maturity at 16 to enable you to make a properly informed and responsible choice…

Not that an 18 year old has much more but they have lived a little, finished or close to have finished one level of education.. etc…

    It's a bad idea.

Most 16 year olds are not well informed enough about important political issues.

Children of all ages should be entitled to vote; as the OP states no-one will be more affected in the long run by decisions taken today than those who are the youngest.

But their parents should cast the vote on their behalf until they turn 18 🙂

16 year olds should be able to drink alcohol.

The idea that its verboten until 18 and then they are let go wild is terrible and contributes a lot to our dysfunctional relationship with the drink.

On the continent you can drink beer and cider at 16, which allows teens to have a gradual exposure to alcohol instead of turning 18 and going straight to vodka whites and jagerbombs

Half the people who contribute to the CA/IMHO forum here aren't well informed enough about political issues, but they get to vote.

I would be more ashamed to be a self identifying "right wing capitalist", especially living in this country where we can see the benefits of left-wing social policies first hand.

The relative peace, prosperity, safety and music/arts culture in this country owes a lot to our safety nets and progressive income redistribution, and sweet feck all to right wing capitalism.

Nobody is asking for under 16s to be able to vote.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,772 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

Your brain isn't fully mature until your mid to late 20s according to https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/publications/the-teen-brain-7-things-to-know.

So should we restrict votes now to the over 25s?

Ya, you posted a video about how Soc Dems think under 16s should be kept away from social media and are using this as a way of suggesting that this also means over 16s shouldn't be allowed vote. What's your logic? Under 16s being protected from social media should affect over 16s voting?

And old people become crotchety right-wing nimbies. This is not a good argument against extending the franchise. Most arguments against young people voting are fairly symmetric against pensioners.

You are quite likely to have multiple different political views over the course of your life. Personally I think it is good to capture them all.

What should the cutoff be? No idea. I don't mind it staying at 18 given that is the age of majority, but we make a fair number of exceptions on that already. 16 also works.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,243 ✭✭✭purifol0

    FFS

SocDems want to restrict social media until they hit 16 as they are too immature to even process its effects, but then also once they hit 16 are mature enough to vote.

Also you said that socdems "think" this should happen, I said they absolutely do not think this, they are campaigning on it because they get their "opinions" from NGO's. They are a party without principle, just opportunistic liars who will say literally anything to get ahead in their career.

    do you struggle with maths?

<16 is not the same as 16+

TBH I'd rather they raised the voting age.

I don't know about half but certainly there are a lot of people who currently have the vote who are poorly informed about politics.

However the ops question is about extending the franchise to 16 year olds.

I doubt anyone is seriously suggesting removing the vote from those who have it.
