Thinking of moving to EV

Indeed, I'm well aware of what a lot of Motorbikers think of the NT-700 and sure, it's a big heavy lump but it's a decent cruiser that offers decent weather protection. It isn't a machine for racing around bends that's for sure but it's not designed for that. Still, vs Car, 65 Hp is a lot for a bike.

Another thread ruined by Mad Lad. You are the most repetitive person I have ever come across. You just love repeating yourself thread after thread. Its so bloody annoying. And the new posters always lap it up because they don’t realise how frustrating it is

The original poster who wanted to discuss moving to EV has now gone to a darkened room with a gun and a bottle of whiskey.

In fairness he knows loads about motorbikes and 3 cylinder Kia's though

I don't like Tesla and know a few others not interested either but the world doesn't need to know that over and over. Especially when it's irrelevant to the topic. It's amazing how it's rammed into literally every EV discussion. You couldn't find a more boring car to talk about than a manual petrol Kia.

Size of Model 3? Let's talk about how we don't like EVs, ignoring the obvious change in personal circumstances where someone suddenly goes from an EV to a paddy spec manual Kia. I don't know anyone who would willingly go back to manual and those driving EV certainly wouldn't go back...

And you’ll find that in 99.99% of cases it’s not actually a Tesla owner that drags Tesla into every thread on other makes/models. It’s overly boring and obvious as you say.

But when a Tesla owner responds to the nonsense they are labelled a fanboy😂

I've a stupid question; if you're in a normal car and you run out of fuel, you can make the journey to the nearest petrol station, but a petrol can and head back, or if your in the middle of nowhere you can get someone to drive out to you with a can of fuel.

What do you do in an EV? are there like mobile chargers that run off a car battery?

100%. It’s the biggest problem with replying to Tesla posts now.

Imagine I went into a Cupra thread and started posting that this car is crap, it’s boring and I hate the VW warranty treatment. I’d be kicked out, and rightly so.

*I actually like the Cupra brand but you get my point 😀

I can’t imagine how this would happen. You don’t really let charge level get below 10%. Even if we were caught out sonehow, there are public chargers 1 km and 10 km away. You’d have to be fairly reckless to keep driving until battery is completely empty.

First off you have to go back to basics.
Have you ever ran out of fuel in a petrol car?

I know I haven’t in all my years driving.

Next, your battery % is displayed on screen. You get a good idea of your car and what distance it can travel at 10% say and you know you have to charge.

Plus, you normally wake up every morning with 100% so you should never ever get caught out with no charge unless you make a drastic mistake yourself.

But let’s say you do get into that position, your down to 10%, which could be 40km in many cars, you will always be near a fast charger so worse case scenario you have to detour and charge.

There were AA type vans with mobile chargers but as far as I know they've got rid of them as nobody ever used them.

Any thoughts on the cost of insurance for EV newbies? I just tried a quote and was surprised initially at how high it was, but then I realised I was comparing with the low valued clunker that I am currently driving.

Then I noticed, there is a huge difference also between the 3rd party fire&theft quote (around €400), and the fully comp (around €800). This was based on an indicative value of 35K.

Question is, if there's any truth to the rumour that EVs are more expensive to insure than ICE?

Ok fair enough thanks for answering.

I went to Belfast in January, my first long journey in the EV. Left the house with 98% and charged up to 80% in Belfast but when I left it was baltic and the heat had to be cranked up and there was a road closure where we had to detour twice due to poor signage so used more battery than expected. On the way back the range eventually dropped to just below the remaining journey distance so I knew I had to find a charger. I had something like 130km to go by the time I realised I wouldn't make it so there was no real surprise of running out of battery. I stopped for a 7 minute charge and could have even just stopped for 5 minutes.

On my next long journey I will just charge beyond 80% to give myself some headroom.

Yes and no. It’s cheaper for some and more expensive for others depending on your individual circumstances etc

I was paying €236 on a 762bhp AWD EV compared to €600 on a Merc ML270 CDi to give an idea. I paid €357 this year to renew the Model Y AWD. Paid €500 for the 530e. Paid €167 for the Pajero!

You really have to call around.

Test drove the Renault 5 again today. Have decided I'm getting one but can't decide which colour…yellow seems to be the most popular colour but I'm afraid it will get old quickly.

The salesman was kind of pushing me towards PCP. Sounds appealing but I'm not certain…

That’s my fear. The blue is nice and I’d do the Williams clio look but I wouldn’t buy a dark car ever again. Scrapes and swirls will drive me mad. The white is the obvious choice but the yellow and green are the best colours. My fear with those would be resale really as once you get over the initial launch of this car, what will the average buyer look for on a colour.

Hah yes, this thread seems to have taken on a life of its own since I posted.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,716 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

I think it's a more interesting thread now. People seem to be happy to engage, maybe you're the problem.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,716 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

The OP said he was thinking of a petrol golf……….

Nothing wrong with 3 cylinder engines, at least it gets me where I want to go , anywhere , any time without having to stop at chargers.

Would I rather 4 cylinders ? of course.

    😂😂😂

FWIW, you said nobody needs an SUV. I would say most people don't. I hate most SUVs, but for health reasons, I got one. Also have a decent sized family, so the space is much appreciated, especially for anyone sitting behind me. They were crushed in the Model 3.

Yeah and that's their decision, I'm happy to be back in a proper car to be honest. Each to their own.

Paddy spec, lol not everyone is that much addicted to tech that they must have it in a car and can't drive without it or be so dumb a driver that they need all the tech to prevent them having an accident because their too thick to drive properly, concentration of a flea.

This isn't a tesla thread and don't worry, I've no intention going near them.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 40,648 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gumbo

It’s not a 3 cylinder lawn mower thread either but here we are.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,716 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

There ye go, that's the spirit, so you are getting the R 5 then ?

I wouldn't suggest PCP, Just remember the salesman's job is to get you to sell a car and PCP makes it vastly more attractive due to the low monthly payments.

In an EV you have a gauge that tells you what % is left in your battery & usually an estimated range. So ideal is to not let it completely run out. My one will also ping a notification every time I turn on the engine if it's at 20% or below offering to show me on the map nearest charging points. A lot more helpful than my old diesel for that!

If I had run out of fuel in my old diesel car, I wouldn't have gotten anyone to drive out to me or walked back, I would have called the rescue part of my insurance so in an EV that's no different for me.

I don't mind the new Mini too much but do agree that it's not as nice as the older versions.

Honestly I don't remember the Renualt - was probably in one but didn't stick in my mind.

Mainly I like an interior that's clear, easy to navigate round & doesn't need to go through 7 different menus on the screen to get to aircon. I have an Enyaq at the moment & I like how there are buttons for things like the Climate control etc. Quick access. Yes they can be set further on the screen but it's easy. I want to feel like I'm driving a car not a computer on wheels.
