switching is very easy, I changed over tk smart meter rates and I moved suppliers several times and it’s simple, took me a while to get a refund from electric Ireland

I didn't say it was difficult to switch, just not as simple a process as I thought it would be

The switching is easy. But it's not make a call, wait a couple of days and you're on the new provider and new unit rates, for me at least.

It's 2 days wait to switch provider, ( been 4 days already tbh) then 2 weeks of being on a higher rate with the new provider, before being switched to the plan I switched to, that's all I meant.

the higher rate is only small money for a short period of time, when i have switched i got put on the new rates straight away because they used my meter reading and with smart meter switching obviously i didn't need to submit

pre pay might be dragging their heels in this case

it is literally make a call, wait a few days, you're with a new provider. In your case it's 14 days which is long but still incredibly simple

i have MCC12 meter on my current bill, now tryin to switch to electric ireland and they are asking me if i want to enable smart features (?) sure they are already enabled, would it be worth it to disable it for any reason with EI or any other company?

Anyone noticing a huge increase in their unit usage on their bills?

Changed from SSE Airtricity to Flogas around 6 months ago. Bill for this period last year was for 300 units used, got one today and it said we had used 559 units which is more than any bill for a Winter period we have been in the house. Been no constriction works or anything out of the ordinary going on in the house which may account for this huge increase so we are fairly baffled. Our previous bill was a decent increase in units compared to the same period the year previous as well.

No offence but nobody else is going to notice an increase based on your house. Have you been submitting meter readings regularly and are the bills based on your readings?

Apologies in advance for the stupid question…my gas and electricity contracts are up on the 27th August. When should I choose a new supplier so as not to get hit with an early exit fee - after the 27th or ..some other time?

Im also coming up to renewal and I'm on the old 24hour rate unactivated smart meter. Are we now in a situation where activating it is a good solution as it was a big no no the last few years unless you had an EV etc. (PS, i'm a regular user, no EV, most usage is 4pm-11pm

upload the file from Esb networks to energy pal and it will give you the best option going forward, there’s no hard and fast rule as everyone’s usage is different

Smart rates have improved lately but that could be to make everyone switch over, similar to the big deisel switch in 2008 for less tax

Yes I've been monitoring meter readings and the bills are based on these. Daily average has increased massively and we are not doing anything out of the ordinary compared to previous years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 264 ✭✭Lester_Burnham

While everyone has had increased bills, the only reason that you'd have increased usage is, well, because you're using more electricity. You'll have to figure out what the cause is because it's unique to your house.

I'd start by switching everything off and checking that the meter isn't running. Then gradually switch things on. You might have a rogue appliance. Your consumption may have changed but that's a big change. Or maybe someone is stealing your electricity.

Do you have a septic tank or water well pump that might be running continuously due to float switch malfunction or for some other reason?

have you got a grow house in the attic or next door lol - to jump up 250 units is insane and if everything has stayed the same it needs investigating

a smart meter is working once fitted and contacting esb networks for your downloadable file will not move you to a smart tariff ( commonly called activating smart meter) registering with esb networks take a couple of minutes and the file can be downloaded and uploaded to energy pal with no negative repercussions

the only people that can put you on a smart tariff is your provider

Well, I got a call from Energia today, offering me their 33% rate and €50 credit, which I accepted. They have also offered to back date my account with a better day/night rate than the non-discounted one I'm currently on with them, until my Smart Plan with them kicks in. Thanks for the heads up about this possibility, as it's probably the best rates I can get.

I'm now on the phone with Electric Ireland, telling them to cancel the switch, but there's some issue as apparently the switch is still "pending" and she doesn't know if she can cancel it until it's come through. She says it's something to do with me having a Smart Meter, but have never been on a Smart Plan, and I shouldn't have been offered a Smart Plan online, I should have been offered a non-Smart plan, and then a Smart Plan after 2 weeks. That all sounds ridiculous to me, but they've just come back off hold to say they can process the cancellation. I think maybe they're just new or not sure. Anyhow, it looks like the switch will be cancelled and I'll be back with Energia at the 33% rate.

Unfortunately, I was moving my Gas to EI too, and Energia's dual fuel rate wasn't as good, so I'll have to switch my gas separately, but as I was already with two different suppliers that's not much of a hassle for me. I'll just wait to make sure the switch cancellation has gone through before I look to switch the Gas again!

Good stuff. Nice to have a small win.

Did you change from an old meter to a new smart meter during this time?

I knew someone that this happened to. Absolutely no change in usage patters. After a through energy audit of the house, they concluded that the new meter was reading accurately. Only reasonable explanation was that the old day-night meter was probably faulty and under-reading, meaning they effectively had subsidised power for years.

Do I have to contact Flogas for the Emerald Park tickets or how did people receive them? Signed up a few weeks ago

They also have this website https://www.flogasfeelgoods.com for "rewards", I'm not a customer anymore so dunno if that's related.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,675 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

it’s not part of the rewards, this deal was just for the bwg sign up

Hi, what is this about? I am also with energia and about to switch to electric ireland… by the way- are electric ireland rates advertised on their website without VAT? They seem to be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,385 ✭✭✭jasonb

Check out Post 12876 a page or two back. You switch to someone else, and then during the cooling off period Energia will ring you and and offer you a better deal, and maybe some credit too. I was with with a 37% discounted rate with Energia before my contract ended. I rang them and the best they could could give me was 30%. So I switched online to Electric Ireland (also at 30%) and then a few days later Energia rang me offering me 33%. I accepted their offer and rang Electric Ireland to cancel the switch. Basically they offer you a better rate if it looks like you are leaving.

I initiated a switch from Prepay Power, they rang me and offer me 700 euro credit. I called them back the next day and said I still didn't think it was good enough to stay with them based on their rates and my usage.

They offered me 900euro credit added to my meter, 700 immediately and 200 in February.

Thinking about it since I'm still going to go ahead with the switch to flogas which sounds mad I know, that even with 900euro credit it still makes more sense to go elsewhere

If I move in the next 12 months I'm liable for the whole lot as far as I can tell which would be a huge worry so I can't really risk it.

IIf I'd know they'd be so flaithiúlach with the credits I'd have been initiating a switch each year for the past 3 years of being with them, regardless of whether my landlord got wind of it or not. Kicking myself

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,218 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

That's a very good offer in fairness, how many months would the 900 cover you for? None of the bill providers would offer that to keep your business. I'd definitely crunch the numbers on that one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,675 ✭✭✭✭OmegaGene

Jesus €900 credit sounds great to me, what’s your yearly spend ? That would cover us for the year and have some change on my contract with flo gas

    It's insanely generous sounding alright

Annual Cost last year was around 2300

    1000001238.jpg

Annual estimated cost with flogas, with my usage is around 1500 I think. But only a 50 euro break fee and no paying back a silly amount of money if I end up having to move out a month early

Seriously hurting my brain the past few days cos it sounds too good to be picking at orherwise
