Absolutely. It’s not a case of the money has run out, the banks/creditors are banging at the door.

It’s a case of we’re not making enough profits to make it worth our while, so we need some subs to make it worth our time. As owners, they are perfectly entitled to do this.

They invested €200k, that pot reduced to under €100k at end of 2022 (not clear how much of the expenses included interest or fees paid to the owner, could be 0, could be more). Then net current assets went back up to €170k by December 2024 after two profitable years. So they’ve plenty to play with, but seemingly are worried that could disappear without subs.

what do you mean by no repercussions? There have been plenty of mods that have been revoked and some even banned due to their actions.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,258 ✭✭✭The Rooster

Ignoring moderation (there are some genuine gripes, but some of the comments re modding are people acting the goat), I think the views of mods on this whole plan is really the most valuable/interesting to hear. You guys/gals don’t know everything, but you know more than the rest of us. You don’t have any monetary incentive, but you (generally!) have the good of the boards.ie at heart.

Is it just me or does having the ads disabled as a subscriber fix the page bouncing issue?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 47,126 ✭✭✭✭muffler

With 14 posts in a 2 hour period you have certainly dominated discussion here. Personally I think should look for some other discussion forum where your comments would be more than welcome and who knows you might be lucky and find a sloth appreciation thread.

Not entirely the bouncing, though it seems a bit improved, but the bell notifications on laptop now seem to react properly to 'mark all as read'.

Haven't noticed any bouncing (on desktop anyway) since subscribing funnily enough.

    edit.

Moved onto a different sub forum and it was bouncing again, albeit briefer than previously.

    Thread stuck.

Edit: Unstuck now. I think the bouncers were just dragging an idiot out the door.

The thread bouncing is due to loading of post quotes and other factors. This is a known issue and will be resolved within the scope of the site cleanup.

I just wanted to jump on here to note that all emails and PM queries surrounding subscribers accounts, those users that have subbed using a different email to the one associated with their account is being worked through. Your role assignment will be updated as soon as possible. The automation triggers with matching details, I will be amending those subs manually. Again, a massive thank you to all who have supported and subscribed. Thank you all for your patience.

    Mike.

It's an interesting comparison in terms of moderation policy. AAM has a MUCH harder moderation policy. For example, this thread, with its beautifully vague thread title, wouldn't have lasted 10 minutes on AAM before being either deleted or at least given a sharp instruction to make the thread title detailed and relevant.

Chat is really not encouraged on AAM. Last time I looked, the chat forums were the same ten people who've been talking to each other there for the last 20 years, largely agreeing with each other's right wing economic views.

Fair play to Mr B in funding it himself though, it is a valuable tool, in its own niche.

Because 'Search' no longer works to any useful degree on here (ironically) - what was said about the ability to delete personal data, should the site actually face closure? I'm not going to go through 50+ pages to find the answer.

Secondly, has there been an update on the number of new subscribers?

I mean… I literally only installed an ad-blocker because of Boards. Specifically, the incredibly annoying AJ Products adverts, one with someone supposedly trying to video conference with a laptop on a table so unstable it looked like they were in an earthquake, and the person they were meeting with was so thick they were trying to adjust their own monitor to fix it; and the guy lobbing an apple core at a bin. Didn't matter if you 'x'ed the ad and said "I don't want to see this ad again", it just kept on appearing.

Notifications not fixed - much improved (it works sometimes) but still not reliable.

Edit: I complained a couple of times about those AJ ads, they were some of the most annoying I have ever seen, blinking and wobbling away at the side of the screen.

Thats not a issue with just boards though.

I use adblocker all the time but its because sites don't do a good job of vetting advertisers - scam ads, mobile game ads in particular (Youtube mainly).

Any idea of numbers of subscribers yet?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,459 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

    200 odd I believe…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 4,619 ✭✭✭xhomelezz

Think it's nearly 300, as posted before, plus there's few posters paying with different emails so somebody was saying it could be around 350 so far.

Hit the switch to keep the lights on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,491 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

313 are found currently under - in desktop - searching by member and then under the assigned role "paid member".

And I guess there's another cohort who have subbed, but aren't coming under that search term as there's a disparity between the email their username is under and the email their payment is currently under.

I would guess there's somewhere between 350-400 in total at the moment.

You seem to be assuming the €200k debt on the books can be ignored. Net current current assets less net liabilities stand at €-30k. Until such time as that debt is paid or somehow written off, I wouldn't think boards has any money to play with, nor would I say they're in a strong financial position. My guess, and it is no more than a guess, is given there has been no interest accruing on this sum that it is a director's loan, put into the company on behalf of the new owner to keep it afloat while it got back on its feet. It clearly is going to have to be repaid at some point, or may be in the process of being called in, hence the current crisis.

Looked at another way, someone is playing quite a long game keeping this place going, taking significant risks with their own capital. As a long term user of this site, I for one appreciate that and fully hope the current owners can make a few bob out of all this going forward.

There are a few users on that list that haven't been active in a number of years so not sure how accurate is is tbh

And those of us who feel boards has had its day are supposed to feel bad we don't join the floundering sheep handing over money for a woebegone site?

When the people.in charge can't even get the message out clearly concisely and bloody properly, how do people expect them to keep this place going.

Maybe they're so ingrained in this place that the thought of looking for another occupation is too difficult to consider.

It could just mean they have been browsing boards (without logging in with the account they have subbed with) or browsing without been logged in at all. They may feel nostalgia about the site and just want to support the site. So may not be as negative as you think.

On the discussions about moderation, over the last year I have my interactions with mods and taken to task over things all in a polite an constructive manner. Mainly because the community didn't like me oversharing about a certain platform and made complaints thinking I had alternative motives etc.

A thread I created in April 2024, was nearly closed due to lack of others participation, but luckily it had a change of which category it was under. And things I had suspicions of happening are coming into reality now. Which makes the thread relevant now. I was well head of the curve on it.

I bare no ill will towards the mods and understand the actions needed, but did make me take things I want to discuss of this platform to other platforms.

So I maybe an exception to people having poor feelings about mods actions etc?

I saved over €800 in the past few weeks from the bargains threads alone and thousands over the years so if giving back €50 makes me a floundering sheep fine by me.

I want boards to survive. I'm a daily user. I have zero faith that the current owner has any plan other than get money from people to do something with that may result in site being retained.

He pledged to answer loads of questions. He answered maybe 3.

Loads of sensible and intelligent pints made about how to better get word out seem to have been ignored.

People have pointed out that the site appears to have been profitable for last 2 years (according to CRO documents) but has a debt. No indication if the money being raised is to service debt, improve the site, increase the future security of site or anything like that. Baffling.

People have said they are paying as a thank you to all the years of boards. @Boards.ie: Odhran is the owner only in the last little while and while he has kept site going, doesn't seem to have listened to users and brought the vanilla thing in. The boards that people remember and are thanking predates him.

If Odhran provides updates and a plan and proves that he's going to listen to the user base, then I'll happily contribute.

    This echo's my sentiments.

I've been on boards for such a long time but there's no doubt in my mind the introduction to Vanilla has really done so much damage to the forum.

I can understand the thinking behind moving away from vbulletin and wanting to keep the site alive but is the site really alive with so many users leaving because of Vanilla? It's just a pale in comparison to vbulletin.

The modding isnt helping either but Vanilla is the main culprit

I've been really torn about subscribing or not but I just couldnt pull the trigger due to Vanilla and thinking if you're going to continue with Vanilla you're setting yourself to fail.

If the pitch was yes we're suffering due to Google’s algorithm changes but we know the problems the site has, we want to make changes including moving away from Vanilla and here's our plan……

Id be onboard for subscribing in a second

How much would it cost to move away from Vanilla though? Maybe it's a non runner

It wouldn't be that cost involved more process itself is not easy to do hence the disaster moving from vB to Vanilla, it has been discussed in thread. I might quote some below if I find them again! Or search my replies in thread.

Boards was amazing over the years.

It helped me personally, through college and with all my techy bits and pieces.

I had a blast and you will always be in my /science/anatomy/HEART.

It's not you, its Reddit / ChatGPT.

See you in heaven along with Argos, Depenhams, Xtra Vision and of course... my eircom.net email address. It's been real ❤️
