I’m glad whoever built boards in the first place did so , and I’ve learnt many useful things from the kind friendly people who I found here, so thanks for that , and as for the bargains , well over 50 euro worth in the past.

I would love to see a more organic wholesome healthy site where good ideas flourish and fear hatred and ignorance are diminished with good common sense humility and humour….
I hope this is possible of course I’d love to do it, but as more have pointed out this is about community, so maybe some are already coming together to come up with something . If so , I’m on board for it .

They could do something like a raffle - remember the Canadian couple a few years ago that raffled their Irish cottage to collect funds for healthcare workers during Covid? I think they got over a million, the tickets were a tenner.

As to what to put up for a prize, I don't have a clue. Maybe that's where a sponsor could come in.

From a sponsors point of view they probably need to be mixed into the mainstream forums a bit more to realise value that justifies the cost rather than being hived off to another area.

so what like having the Motors forum sponsored by Toyota? I don't think that would go down well and would either drive users away, or knowing boards would have users constantly starting anti-Toyota threads for the laugh.

Richer Sounds must still sell a good bit of stuff through here. I bought a TV off them once.

I always found the 'Talk To ..' forums useful. Something similar would be good

As I mentioned, the abridged accounts for the year ended 31 December 2024 have landed and are publicly available! Just because you don’t have it does not mean it does not exist You hardly think I’m inventing it!!

Note 3 to the accounts shows the company made a profit for 2024 of €30k, after paying all expenses such as hosting, wages, etc. As I mentioned previously, there is no detailed breakdown of revenues and expenditures. Profit for 2023 was €64k. Losses were made in earlier years.

I remember getting a whole years Electric Ireland bills refunded because some young fella from EI rang me trying to get me to renew and about 3/4's way through the call I told him no thanks I was moving elsewhere which I was. So, off I went to a cheaper provider

However, he had put me through as renewing then the threatening letters came and even for cutting me off, all the while I was with someone else.

Well, rather than go through phone hell I came on here and talked to Electric Ireland and it was sorted and within a few weeks they refunded me the whole previous year for the hassle.

So yeah, that was a good set of forums :)

Anyone remember the Currys Managing Director on here - that was good as well.

Richer Sounds are excellent on here too.

    I'll try this once more.

    @Boards.ie: Mike @Boards.ie: Odhran

Have you looked into a way for us to pay the subscription via CARRIER BILLING?

Many of us have credit sitting in our accounts that we want to get rid of. We've even had an ongoing thread for years trying to find ways of using it up.

I'd much rather use mine to keep Boards alive than give it back to Three after six months.

Genuinely saddened at how a uniquely national forum with massive goodwill keeps on making such blunderous missteps in such cack handed ways. Even the 'important announcement' is completely half arsed. This just was not thought through at all - back of a fag packet stuff - which gives the impression the current owner doesn't really give a toss in earnest, and their statements further that perception.

The current 'plan' appears to be to get approx 2k users to subscribe, but am dubious this can be achieved. Maybe it could with a clear thought out roadmap, and genuine supporting content, but my understanding of 'the plan', is 'let's ask dedicated Boardsies to hand over their hard earned cash, and in return they will be given a worse version of what we have now'.

How long did it take to have this brainwave (just now, on the cusp of closure, despite a subscription model previously existing?), and once it was had, was it just immediately communicated without any supporting work? Appears so.

Not a great sell, even to someone who does want to support the site. There is a distinct lack of trust of management for me a this juncture, and they don't seem to have the energy or the ideas to make a success of it, even with all the usp's of Boards.

Probably the best thing that could happen is the site is effectively donated to pillars of the community to manage. It would be a travesty to lose the site and it's content, even after the move to 'Vanilla'.

One thing that has never been clear to me is why vBulletin was not sustainable - what occassioned the move to 'Vanilla' in the first place? That unfortunately looks like it may have been the start of the end for Boards.

Just picked up a copy of that, my bad. I see they're still carrying a net loss of €31k due to what looks like a €200k loan which is slowly getting paid off.

I bought a good bit of gear from Richer Sounds, having discovered them here. They're an excellent company to deal with and they give great advice too.

I interpret the accounts similarly as you, non-current liabilities been the main point.

Without detailed P+L though, it's difficult to know if the profits of the last 2 years will continue or not. I would make an educated guess that advertising is the main source of income, but still only a guess...

A poster will receive a Warning/Banning if they deserve it.

Nothing has changed in that regard.

Paid or not paid will make no difference.

If you don't like it, leave 😁

Monday noon and no posts from the boards.ie: …. Profile's yet today?

Hope they are not busy fixing accounts for people not using their boards email?

I boosted my social post yesterday 3 times yesterday, and just again now. I don't think I will be keep doing it. Because people on the feed might get tired of seeing the same post again. (Not a repost but same post recreated with a new time stamp on it.)

I got 3 reposts since Saturday, 1 from a boards profile I recognized.

Imagine going into a pub, ordering a few rounds, acting the maggot and causing hassle and then getting barred. Would you be demanding to finish your pint or a refund? More importantly, do you think you'd be getting them?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 gerry32

Imagine going into a pub, ordering a few pints and find yourself being treated with basic courtesy and respect by the barman. You definitely would want stay there and would definitely want to keep returning.

When you enter said pub, do you immediately ask them for a "comprehensive breakdown of the monthly costs"?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9 gerry32

No, but I would ask them for a drink.

What is the problem with requesting some transparency?

Why is there such a sense of hostility when the question is put forward?

It's bizarre how people signed up to this site seemingly with the intent to complain about this.

I presume you're a rereg of someone banned for being a dick or whatever. Why were you "bullied" when most posters never come on a mod's radar?

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 35,424 CMod ✭✭✭✭ShamoBuc

Could you imagine someone paying a subscription and then expecting the rules to not apply to them.

There's that attitude again is right.... 'it's dead aleready'.

The non-current liability is most likely €200k owed to the owners/investors by the company as there is no/nominal share capital invested. Third party loans tend to have periodic capital repayments, so i’d guess they don’t have bankers knocking on the door looking for money.

Net current assets at €170k at end of 2024, so just €30k away from being in a position (if they wanted) to repay the €200k in full after only about 4 years is pretty good going. But they expect advert income to take a hit from 2025

Great post there and highlights much of what is wrong. The site appears directionless, the owners appear detached and a bit clueless (maybe burnt out), the rescue "plan" is half-assed and half-hidden. It's not even clear whether the aim is simply to break-even or generate a profit for the owner. I've no problem either way, but the lack of clarity is very worrying as it reinforces the feeling of drift. And it's not clear what the actual implications of "strip it back to plain Vanilla" are, but it sounds like a recipe for more chaos and disgruntlement rather than a magic bullet. And what's worse it sounds like a tech solution (of sorts) to what is actually a business problem. With the greatest of respect to the owner, this needs someone with significant business experience to get involved (even if briefly) and conduct a top to tail review and set-out the options towards viability. Everything else revolves around that.

They are short of cash flow and you want them to to hire an expansive expert on business matters to conduct a review? Where is the logic in that when they are getting suggestion of improvements (i know some bonkers) in this thread for free!

Well as someone mentioned the majority of posters are probably over 40 - eventually those will die and boards will be gone anyway from natural wastage!!!!

We need young blood to replace us old posters!!

Paid sub there. have used Boards for years and found it invaluable for advice on bargains, DIY advice etc. It really has alot going for it and is free from alot of the idiocy on other platforms. Will paying the subscription lead to any change in governance structures though i wonder?? - would be a shame to lose it as a part of Irish internet history but it also has alot of potential. Hopefully ye are not in same position down the road if can't get act together to allow site to flourish.
