The "paid member" thing is a bit unnecessary, I think. It just sets up a potential conflict.

Posts along the lines of "Im not subbing because Im huffing about X,Y,Z in the past" really are lame. You're probably not going to sub anyway (which is fine) but why discourage others?

Some of us really want Boards to continue and the only chance is as many subscriptions as possible. Any kind of sub is a risk worth taking imo.

On old boards usernames had "Subscriber" beside them. It was never a problem.

More than happy to subscribe. This site has been invaluable to me over the years. Long may it continue

There was always a subscriber option which was pretty cost effective and never caused much trouble. For a couple of quid a month you got a custom icon, access to the subscriber forum, couple of other bits I can't remember plus you kept the site going. Arguably that was probably for profit at the time whereas now it's a more noble cause. I never minded chipping in as it was a small amount. Think I did €10 or €12 quarterly for a few years.

It would be great to see boards not only survive but thrive again in some form or other so have subscribed for a year. Let's keep the lights on (and who knows, maybe even help the site afford a platform that isn't vanilla).

    Paid annual sub.

Reckon they've been pretty clear about the risk. Caveat emptor.

If it works, the site will at least be maintained, and either there will be a surplus and development or the proceeds will be siphoned and we'll never see them again. The optimist in me says the former, hopefully.

Web hosting is not THAT expensive any more.

In any case I'll take the chance to recognise how useful the site has been for 20 years, while fully accepting not everyone will be in the same boat.

It's no different to the many newspaper who are free if you accept ads and your personal data harvested

I agree, they really should let the half-dozen-posts lot have a big input into things.

Grand, so when mods or admin accounts don't sign up for visible "paid member" status, I'm sure it'll be fine.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,124 ✭✭✭✭cj maxx

Yes . But they won't verify me by email except I had no idea a ph no was connected to my account. The only phone I 've been on Boards is this one for the last 5 years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 1,691 ✭✭✭DayInTheBog

I had a similar issue. I didn't want to give a phone number so used revolut

  • Administrators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,212 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Big Bag of Chips

    I don't know why it wouldn't be @nachouser.

There were subscriptions previously. Some mods/admins subscribed, some didn't.

Nobody is being forced to do anything. Subscribe if you want, don't if you don't.

Plenty of people want to, and already have. Plenty of people don't want to, and won't.

I wasn't asked for a phone number, I pm'd Mike this morning with receipt details and my email, but I am still getting ads.

Just paid an annual subscription. Happy to support boards after all it has given me over many years.

Sure, Bargain Alerts has probably even saved me a multiple of the subscription fee (if I ignore all the unnecessary purchases I've made as a result!).

Best of luck with this new approach.

Sorry to hear that there is a risk to the future of boards.

Although not an active poster, I have been a user for over 20 years.

Very happy to take out an annual sub to help keep the lights on. Despite not using it often, I have certainly got €50 worth over the years and I am sure thousands of others have got multiples of that.

It's worth paying that just to avoid seeing ads.

A quick scan of the stats show over 50m posts! That is providing a lot of help and entertainment to an awful lot of people.

It might be worth inviting a few of your many strong supporters into a private forum to generate a few ideas on how to make boards more sustainable in the long term. And maybe also develop a Plan B if it turns out that a sustainable model can't be found. If you do set up such a forum, I would be very happy to participate.
