Tried Discord, just could never get used to it (channel, server, etc) - Something about it not being intuitive.

Facebook is grand operational wise but hate that on website it keep refreshing to the top regularly (annoying when you have scroll down quite far) and Meta do more tracking than they are supposed to.

I'd like Reddit, you can set subreddit notification, have various sort options (in subreddit thread and individual post). It does chronological sort like boards.ie of the main conversation post in each thread.. but further subconversation is more like a branch out style which is not a bad thing to keep to a specific subtopic

Long time lurker very little posts

    Mad idea,

We have all saved money using bargain alerts. What about all of us actually try the subscription for a while and see we can save the site.

Have to say I think boards closing would be a huge loss.

    just my 2c worth.

If they don’t reach the required number of subscriptions it will still shut down so that’s why a plan is being out in place 👍

Ye I set it up years ago when I lived in Australia so myself and some Aussie friends (and some from back home) could talk nonsense. It's just been sitting there for years unused since we all came home. Can rename it if required.

Just signed up there anyway. Let's hope they get enough to keep the lights on for another year…

Reddit et al are no good for bargain alert style stuff because of the weighting and promotion of content based on popularity. Any medium where your posts/comments aren't seen unless they are popular will suck tbf.

The ideal thing would be a simple phpbb style forum that could be like boards bargain alerts once was, a community, not somewhere for profiteering and shyster behaviour.

From theFrom the sounds of it, Discord would probably be the best for this type of discussion. I would be interested in joining a server if someone sets one up.

By theBy the way, I'm leaving my post formatted as it is so you can see one of the major issues people have with this site. especially if they use mobile browsers Or it could just be speech recognition that I am using.

Either way, it's an issue that needs to be addressed.

That's a beauty of Reddit. Once you know where you need to go you're sorted. A quick search of the sub reddit and yiu are there.

What's the point of a bargain alerts forum that you have to search?

And where is the beauty in only seeing bargains that other people think are cool? Popularity contest/karma based forums are just a waste of time.

Reddit just doesn’t work well for deal-hunting. If you don’t check the subreddits daily, you’ll likely miss good deals as they quickly fall down the list and never resurface on the front page with the standard sorting.

Worse again are the niche deal; they will barely get any upvotes, so unless you’re online constantly, good luck ever spotting them.

And of course, there’s always the karma farmers. Once they figure out which kinds of deals get the most attention, they’ll keep posting the same stuff over and over, pushing more unique or valuable posts further down and out of view.

well aware of that, but it's not a fix. not a solution to this problem either:

    commentscore.JPG

IMHO Reddit is not a solution as a replacment for this forum and that is before you even get into them selling the content and what a crapshow it'll be when they finally stop old.reddit working

The problem with Reddit is the posters can be anyone from anywhere in the world and you can't know their agendas.

Ya, reddit wouldn't be great for say a general amazon deals thread that we have here. The post would just be loads of popular stuff up the top with no sense of chronology.

Reddit is way worse than boards, they have very sophisticated A.I and you can get banned off reddit for absolutely nothing, even being suspected of ban evasion will get you a ban and getting back on with different email, i.p etc is difficult, using VPN will see you shadow banned, that's really nasty stuff shadow banning.

I got banned off a EV section of reddit for saying I went back to manual petrol cars after 10 years of EV driving and that's all it took. With reddit you very much have to follow the narrative of the thread a bit like boards was only on boards you would get your comments deleted and a temp ban or whatever, could come back with different account dead easy but on reddit it's very difficult to get back after a ban, no point appealing it , waste of time, it's just bot that replies to tell you they examined and have decided you broke the rules and can't tell you what rules.

    Reddit is absolute sh1te.

    reddit…

I commented on a video once and I was downvoted to -27 or there abouts, until comment could no longer be seen without expanding it

a few weeks later I reposted the exact same comment on a similar video, but I used 2 alt accounts to upvote it right away, and it was given loads more upvotes and one person commented saying they never knew that

if they see a downvoted comment they will downvote it and disagree

if they see an upvoted comment they will upvote and agree

they are all sheep or AI bots

    The forum looks good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,795 ✭✭✭Mad_Lad

The A.I on reddit is next level, they partnered with an A.I company I think originally to seek out ban evaders and those who might have a more right wing way of thinking. it's possible they use the A.I for other stuff, bots etc. Their ban evasion A.I is scary it's that good, if it doesn't get you hrs after signing in with a new account using different email etc it will get you eventually.

Shadow banning is mad, you're basically talking to yourself, no one sees what you write and no one will know until they realise no one is replying or you're not getting any likes to your comments or you log out and check the thread unregistered.

I wouldn't care to go back there anyway , the sheer level of left wing drivel is insane.

No, because boards is too small for anyone to spend serious money trying to manipulate it.

How does it cost so much money to run then?

How many 6 euro a month subs are needed?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,201 ✭✭✭andrew1977

Previously, not a day went by without me being into the bargain alerts a few times a day.

Now i hardly bother, whether its the lack of posters with bargains or the lack of actual proper bargains out there , but it has fallen off a cliff.

God be with the days with bargain alerts when i got a weighing scales and a sandwich toaster for 1 euro from currys, based on a post in here.

Sandwich maker still going strong many years later, the scales broke, although i cant blame the quality, think it was my eating habits during covid.

As I said in my post if you read it correctly, there are feck all decent proper bargains around anymore , hence the drop off in this section of the forum. Keep up will you .
