How to remove these taps?

I'm trying to take the handles off the taps on an old bath unit and use them to replace the ones on some other taps. They are Gattoni chrome taps. I put them on some years ago but can't for the life of me get them off. Does anyone know how to access the screw under the Hot and Cold caps? I've been trying to pry them off at the point where they met the body of the handle but they won't budge, or rather I can't fit a screwdriver or even a blade into any gap there. Perhaps there isn't one?

Should I take off the white name disc on top instead? I don't want to 'experiment' with that in case I damage it. Here are a couple of pics. Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for that, mine is the second type as there is no grub screw in the spindle. The problem is he shows it with the centre cap already off and that’s the part I need help with.

You should be able to pry off the plastic or porcelain cap off with the tip of a pen knife to access the screw, generally.

I've a pair of sink taps where the cap is actually threaded, and screws off anticlockwise. Just in case.

The screw is usually under the plastic..I did mine a while back, and depending on how long they are there, and what type of water you have, they can need a reminder from a hammer. If you have to do that, just wrap some cloth around the base,to avoid damage..

Thanks guys. So maybe the screw is under the small white disc with Hot or Cold written on it? Again, I don't want to damage that by trying to pry it off if it's just decorative and not the access point for the screw. The whole cap part does seem to be separate from the handle body but there really isn't much of a gap to get a blade or screwdriver in there and believe me I've tried. I'll try turning it instead to see if it does screw off.

Yes, with a rag and a well adjusted vise-grip, might do the trick.

Hmm.. A vise grip could also ruin it if not done very carefully!

Yeah that did it! Now why didn't I think of trying it? 😏 Many thanks for the suggestion, and to @Kaybaykwah for encouraging me!

The cold one just screwed off by hand but I'll have to use something to grip it for the hot one. At least now I know what to do. Good Job I didn't try prying off the white name plates - I'd have ruined them.

Not so easy after all. Got the hot one off using a plumber's grip and a tea towel, not without slightly damaging the chrome but it's not bad.

The problem is the handles don't seem to fit on the other tap spindles. I tried it in reverse and was able to put the handles I want to replace on the taps which had the chrome ones by gently tapping them with a rubber mallet. However I tried the same thing with the chrome handles and couldn't get them on. I didn't want to knock them too much in case I broke the sink.

They're all Gattoni taps and I replaced the upstairs bathroom plastic handles with these chrome ones several years ago so it should work. Do the spindles and the part of the handles that fit onto them come in different sizes? If not, can anyone suggest how I might get them to go on?

Here's what each piece of the puzzle looks like:

Unfortunately tap glands are all different sizes and you'll need each measurement to match to transfer the tap heads successfully (including the number of teeth on the spline which is usually 18 or 20, but can be lower and higher numbers as well).

See diagram here for the different measurements:

I spent a good while researching this when replacing spindles on leaking 30 year old taps that I just needed to keep going for another 6 months.

Ok thanks. It will be hard to measure them accurately I think and to count the teeth as they’re very small. I’ll give it a shot though. The thing is we had what I thought were the same taps upstairs and those chrome handles fitted fine. So they mustn’t actually be the same. Maybe I’ll check it with a Gattoni dealer, if they’re still around. That’s where I bought the chrome replacements about 12 years ago.
