First puncture today in a while, replaced the tube only to find out the valve stem was too short but luckily enough my second spare worked ok. Just to add to the confusion, while changing the tube a lamb wandered over and attempted to chew my bottle cage off! Peristent little fecker too.

Now to go through my other spares and weed out any shorties.

Must be the week for it. Another puncture today, this time with no spares and a 2k walk back to the house, followed by a botched patch job before getting it right. On the plus side, I'm getting very handy at taking Gravelking Slicks on and off by hand without tyre levers.

"£400 locks" - it would be interesting to know which specific ones, because I can't imagine anyone cutting through one of the grinder-proof locks on the street. The videos I've seen suggest they are extremely difficult to cut through.

"I had chained it up for just 20 minutes"

I'd guess they just cut the chain or chains; there are no grinder-resistant chains yet. The wording is ambiguous, so £400 might be the combined value of the locks. For example, one abus citychain granit x-plus is the guts of £200, and it's apparently not that hard to cut with an angle grinder, and if the chain is near the ground not so hard to cut with the biggest bolt croppers (10mm links).

Since the thief was able to cycle the bike away, it does seem likely that they weren't using a grinder-resistant u-lock with a noose chain or something like that. Pedelecs and electric bikes generally probably do warrant a grinder-resistant lock, especially in cities.

Looking at the image on Reddit it's some kind of Hiplok chain. Maybe the Hiplok Gold, as it looks as if it has the strap that lets you wear it as a belt. So that would be 10mm links.

The bike security company are hardly "vigilantes"? "I joined vigilantes on the trail of my stolen £5,000 bike", as is often the case with headlines, doesn't match the article.

i'm off the bike for a few weeks, due to my wife having smashed her ankle coming off a horse. i know the chances are miniscule, but we just want to avoid any possibility of me getting injured too…

Scaling from the UK about 50 people die falling down the stairs every year. ROSPA among others put UK stairs deaths at 700 annually, which I can't believe.

Hope you live in a bungalow 😃.

Might be best not to shower or bathe, lots of falls in bathroom.

Any single steps or high thresholds.

    Is the horse ok?

yes. she saw a bird she didn't expect to see. you'd be surprised at how fast a 500 or 600kg animal can change direction.

That's the main reason I decided to go for a bike over a horse - I've yet to meet a bike that's been spooked by a plastic bag or a bird (maybe either ending up in the front wheel at speed I guess but anyway). Similar to yourself, my missus came off a horse and cracked her rib when our youngest lad was a baby, she was able to get about albeit tenderly, but I eased off on the bike for a bit just in case.

i've heard some almost comical examples. one of the women who has a horse on the same yard ended up with concussion after the horse bolted while she was mounting it; another woman there got the horse under control, and when she got it back to the stable found a feather stuck up one of its nostrils. obviously inhaled it just as the rider was swinging her leg over to mount up.

it's amazing horses as a species haven't gone extinct at some point in history - they spook easily, minor injuries are generally a death sentence, and just eating grass the wrong way can kill them too.

You have to balance that with the effect they have on some humans. I think there's a Irish version of this, set up by a father who lost his child through suicide.

There's nothing like horses to stunt a promising career; they seem completely all consuming to some

Bottom bracket on the way out, noticed a bit of play on it last week and started getting noisy today. Shifting also not great, likely as a result of the BB. Have a new one on order, along with BB tool, inner chain-ring, casette, and new shifter cables. Hoping it all arrives promptly so I can get out again at the weekend, though taking out bottom brackets is not a favourite activity.

Also 3rd puncture in two weeks today, although got it swapped out super quick this time. Topeak minimorph may not be the prettiest or most compact mini-pump out there but really does the job well.

My wife has just drawn my attention to this site; some great cycling (albeit not cycling kit) themed clothes.

Torn between getting a Gravel Bike or a Hybrid like the Trek FX2 for commuting. I don't cycle otherwise.

    Leaning towards gravel bike. Thoughts?

This is a probably a silly question but here goes.

Watching bits of the Tour de France and I was wondering, what do the teams do with the bikes at the end of the season?

Do they get sold on because the following years bike is upgraded or is the same frame etc used and there's minimal upgrades?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,353 ✭✭✭Mefistofelino

Sold. There are several companies who buy the bikes from the teams and sell them on.

Even in Decathlon in France, they re-sell some of the pro bikes online.

Canyon used to sell old Moviestar bikes , Nairo's was available a few yrs ago (pre-Covid prob…), with full Campag eps group, dont think Canyon do that anymore..?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,191 ✭✭✭✭mfceiling

That's fairly cool. So you could potentially pick up a pro's bike that has been ridden in one of the famous races!!

Yes, but I think you'll pay top dollar for those, even if you can find one. A lot of what's available are from lower tier riders in the squads.

Bear in mind that although they are well maintained while in active service, they live very hard lives. Also some of the bikes sold are training rather than race bikes which don't always get the mechanics full attention.
