It is confusing what is allowed now? Can posters be as racist, sexist, homophonic, or anti semitic as they like and not be sanctioned? Even x as some moderation along those lines

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 976 ✭✭✭DayInTheBog

Why couldn't that have always been the case unlike the Draconian moderation which banned anyone who didn't fall in line with the groupthink, myself included.

It's not like it's a new complaint about modding.

I decided to stop posting in CA, I'm not sure this will bring me back. I'll sleep on it

Sometimes a warzone where everything goes and opinions are unfiltered and honest are better.

Leaving modding aside - is culture a part of boards decline too? It seems the younger Irish generation nowadays are all on snapchat or instagram - forum/discussion sites like boards aren't their internet fix. Some of them probably don't even know what boards is and I'd bet the last thing a leaving cert student nowadays is worrying about is 'can I get help from boards?' (Assuming they know what it is).

Even assuming unbanning posters from CA, donations/subscriptions keeping the site alive bought a few years - I still feel like its kicking a can down the road.

The leaving cert of the 2010's didn't have snapchat or instagram so their social media was boards.

The main upside of boards for me was that it's Irish people - on reddit it was all yanky cnuts talking about a country most havn't visited or learned anything about. When I'm argueing about cycling or the size of SUV's - I know its people driving the exact same roads as me. That can't be beat.

    I agree.

I think it's going to have the effect of CA becoming an absolute mess: an unreadable car crash of unreasonable opinions, expressed unreasonably, by unreasonable people.

Looks, like it's true what they say: the squeakiest wheel gets the oil.

An act of absolute desperation when you have to send a bat signal out to trolls.

Good luck with getting people to pay for a site overrun by trolls. They can get that for free on X which has seen its ad revenue collapse going down the same route.

“Rather, it will lead to place being drowned in shít.”

Personally speaking I won’t be contributing to that sh1t- but yes, it will open up a whole new heap of trouble and it’s unlikely I’ll be contributing much to that forum when the fan starts spinning - I asked for bans lifted and better saner modding and fairer penalties - I got that - but it’s probably too much of a rollback - but I’m not complaining - I got what I asked for

If it's just CA, fine, easy to continue avoiding it.

If people want to see what an unmoderated dumpster fire looks like, head over to The Property Pin. No wait, you can't anymore. Try Broadsheet... oh hang on, they're gone too.

If you remove the Current Affairs/IMHO forum, and such.

You remove a big reason for logging in.. But,, No Mods would be needed.

It could be a site where you could find out if the 56A still stops at the Square, or is Tesco still the cheapest for bread.

But nobody wants that, do they..

Omg. Went to the property pin for the first time in years and there's nothing property related on it.

Are you admitting that moderation on this site has been fcking atrocious?

I genuinely thought it had shut down some years ago.

And I think I'm out based on that latest announcement in CA. I'd suggest at the very least aiming to get a decent archive of the site cause it reads as desperation but there's plenty of history to retain.

We've really been lacking such incisive posts as "There’s Ukrainians in my town the last 3 years driving around in BMW X5s and Audi Q5s on Ukrainian plates paying no road tax."....

Just to add, surely the logical progression is to extend the rule to all forums? Seems a bit odd to go radical on the single forum.

I suspect the Venn diagram of people willing to pay to keep the site running, and those whining about moderation is 2 separate circles.

They should have got their payment links working before deciding to side with the latter group, I'm now having second thoughts.

I fully agree. I'm not to keen on handing over my fifty quid if it's going to be used to give oxygen to culture war brain-rot.

If the powers that be think appeasing that is the way forward, then maybe boards does deserve to die.

Fwiw I'm happy to pay the 50 euro to keep things going

Ohh dear saddened to hear this but not financially able to support it as like many other things having to cut ties.

CA has about, maybe, 50 or so consistent posters who will drag the site down to the worst levels if there are no mods there anymore.

Great idea to hand over the site to them now that it's been flagged in the media as needing help to survive.

Their was no moderation for a long time after vanilla and things were great.

I imagine there are a handful of forums which lend to sometimes heated debate. CA, soccer, that sort of thing. I hardly ever observed serious spats in Watches & Timepieces or Golf or in TV & Satellite.

I guess the people on CA used to having it their own way will now have to put up with differing opinions. Shocker. But I dont think there will be what some people seem to imagine. People hardly going to storm the Capitol in there now calling eryone ***** or ****** or whatever. As bad as it sometimes gets we're not at that here on boards are we?
Anyway, no matter where you stand one should be able to vehemently disagree but suffer an opposite opinion. If you're so entrenched that this is not possible then maybe you're as much the problem as the other guy.

Having said all that and while I also stated dissatisfaction with moderation I'm not sure this will save the side.

On another note. So many people giving out about vanilla. Is that because how it behaves on mobile devices? Asking cos I use laptop w boardsie plugin and really its grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 55,894 ✭✭✭✭Headshot

I just dont get the uproar on this

If you have a problem with the CA forum/thread, just ignore it or put posters you disagree with on the ignore list

Am I entirely happy with the new CA rules? Not really but something had to change. The way moderation was handled on the CA was driving people away and discouraging posting (I have numerous PMs by other posters saying this). I had even considered leaving for Politics.ie myself, but it seems that site might be inactive, as new user approvals haven’t been happening.

Now with the new rules, i'm going to give it a chance and see how things go.

I disagree - boards.ie most certainly isn’t CA/IMHO- it’s the collective other forums such as motors, food, photography, travel etc etc

If CA was wiped from boards it would be little loss from a user experience perspective - the true “gold” and value of boards are the topic forums outside of CA

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,001 ✭✭✭Sudden Valley

I think when alot of the threads become unmoderated culture war backgrounds it drives normal people away from the site like happened with Twitter.

In the past I saw that posters that started complaining all the time about wokeness in the films forum were warned but under the new rules I think alot of entertainment threads will be inundated with this American garbage. Not everyone cares about politics.

There's a predictable level of spamming made up anecdotes in the immigration thread now, coming lo and behold from the people who advocate for open borders and every other left wing fantasy known to man.

These are the people who have been largely untouched by the strict rules enforced on that thread, the ones constantly causing arguments and derailing the discussion.

So who's the problem in CA then?

I know I won't be responding to these edge lords and I'd strongly advise others to do the same. Use the ignore function and over time the trolls will get bored. These are the people who were rarely actioned to begin with, no wonder they're acting as they are this evening.

I don't see the relaxation of rules in CA as an excuse to act like a dick, I doubt any other reasonable users do either.

    Glazers Out!

    I don't think a poster calling a black person a <you know what>, a woman a <you know what>, a homosexual <a you know what> or a Jew <a you know what> would pass the relaxed rules.

Of course, for some those accusations are very loose and are applied to anything and everything that rankles them/their outlook.

I've asked for this to be considered a good few times, interesting to see how it shapes that place (CA/IMHO)

I see a few of the pledgers now withdrawing their pledges, hmmm. Not great to be relying on that level of fickleness but better to know now than a few weeks time.

Boards is in danger of closing very soon, if it's yer thing, go here

I love this site and have been using for a very long time but without a proper mobile App the platform will never survive. Are there any plans to do this or why has this not been prioritized?

I probably am willing to pay to keep the site alive but it needs an App.

You're right but CA and after hours before that we're the hook that typically got people engaged before they drifted off to other corners of the site.

It's very important for traffic and that's what kept the bills paid until now

CA was originally created as an offshoot to remove some of the WUM's/ReRegs from AH.

Its the septic tank of the forum.

Maybe make CA subscription only? Or you'll just get the media reporting on JoeyBigBalls99 from Boards.ie saying that he doesn't like all the black people who've just moved into his village and are hassling the local women. It'll get about 50 thanks.
