Thanks =/= people willing to support a paid model. What a strange position to take.

Over the years people have offered to help by dev/software work and setting up subs and other options but were never engaged for some reason. Maybe now Odhran will ask for the communities help with more than just the subs.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

Didn’t think about how many users boards had but actually now that I am thinking of it, it’s probably even much less than that in terms of regular contributors

Doesn’t matter the forum - each forum has a unique set of posters —you see the same names posting regularly - if you add up all of the regular posters on the most popular forums outside of CA, I’d say if it amounted to 1000 individual posters, you’d be doing well to get that figure - I really don’t see 2000 contributing - I see 100s alright but not 1000s

It would be great to have some admin input about the archiving thing. Is there any plan in place at all for it? I in fact find it suspicious that it hasn't been addressed yet.

Data is either gonna be archived, deleted or sold. People should know which before handing money over

Are you being asked to pay for the Reddit sub, though?

The only way I would contribute to the subscriber model proposed would be if there were a root-and-branch review of the current Moderation team and their application of the rules, which was Transparent to all.

I won't hold my breath on that.

Last a/c filed was May 2025 for Dec 2024 year end

Current Assets €197k 2024 vs €157k 2023 how much of that is bank/cash

Liabilities (current and long term) €237k 2024 vs €226k in 2023 what is the make up of this or who is the biggest creditor ?

Profit in 2024 was €30k vs €64k in 2023 but accumulated losses of €31k at end of 2024, so what is the projected profit/loss for 6 months to June 25 ?

If you want members to subscribe or help boards.ie out etc then boards should be open and honest

It's the only way I can see to try and track how many users have viewed/read this thread without access to the backend stats.

I'm seeing it as an indicator of how many might be willing to contribute. Of course, the issue is how LONG they'll contribute for - unless the sub options are reduced to maybe half yearly and annual. At least then there's the potential for some forward planning by Boards?

Even if they hit the goal, €6 per month that can be stopped anytime won't cut it after month 2/3 max. Then what?

I have said I will pay, but my first reaction when the post was dropped saying 'Boards is dying unless you pay up' was not to thank it! It was not a conscious decision not to thank, I just skated past it.

I'd kind of miss boards.ie but I changed user profile and have on this platform stuck to Broadcasting / TV / RTÉ threads.

I think it has largely become overly moderated, on one of the main reason I left my old account behind.

What's the audience per day, do you sell adverts outside of google and how are you marketing the service.

Have to say I only happened by the site wayback when, I am not sure if I would find it now.

Great post and yes, the complete absence (well at least in full view) of engagement with those that could and want to help maintain the site thus cutdown costs has always baffled me.

I'm guessing most professionals wouldn't engage in half-arsed modifications either and pick and work with the best platform available.

Boards is in danger of closing very soon, if it's yer thing, go here

Just thinking, I've only got my IT hat on because that's the area I know, realistically speaking, we've surely got people here who are good at accounting, marketing, involved with grants that may be relevant or other useful and relevant skills.

It's actually mad that you've such a breadth of professionals here and you WOULDN'T try to engage some of them? Many of whom may be willing to donate time worth multiples of the proposed donation tiers. I've seen devs worth 600 quid a day who post here. Even if you got one will to put a few hours in here and there, you'd be far better off financially.

Also, as an aside, to those saying to cull/archive the old threads, i get the idea of trying to trim down costs, but honestly I think the history on the site is part of what makes it valuable.

Maybe a poll then? Is that still a thing?

Will you contribute to helping Boards survive

    • Yes (€50/annually)
    • Yes (Half-Yearly/Quarterly)
    • Yes (Monthly)
    • No
    • Undecided (please explain why below)

At least then Boards (and the rest of us!) might have a better indication of if this appeal has been seen and is likely to succeed?

I've been hearing this for years and I don't think anyone who has offered has even gotten a response.

Just looked on the CRO website for boards.ie and the last filed documents appear to be from 2018. Where did you get 2023/2024 data from. What entity name or company number did you user for your CRO search?

What about making boards.ie open source on Github. I'm a developer and I'm sure many more here also are. We could slowly or quickly add community requested features and do maintenance.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 15,794 ✭✭✭✭loyatemu

    make what open source?

people suggesting leveraging the dev community in the user base - are they to provide their services for free to the commercial entity that owns Boards? Does Boards become a charity? Even 4chan had an owner, you can't just have an "open source" message board, someone has to own it and ultimately be responsible when the police/lawyers/bailiffs knock on the door. The software running the board is a side issue.

Scroll up a few posts to @ants09 breakdown.

The company name is Boards Software Ltd

The code base. I'm happy for it to remain commercial, but having users build some features can help cut costs and actually get **** done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 733 ✭✭✭ants09

Boards.ie was merged with Journal Media Ltd in Oct 2018, which is the screen shot of the one you are look at.

Boards Software Ltd was formed Nov 2020 and 100% owned by Odhran who is the owner of this site now

    Two different companies

from the sounds of things the first thing that would have to happen is to migrate off Vanilla as the open version of that platform is dead. So step 1 becomes a massive job. I can't see the site surviving on volunteers and it's probably not practical for a commercial company to have unpaid, un-contracted people monkeying about with their code. The reason for moving to Vanilla was to remove all in-house development.

As it stands, they are asking for money for the commercial entity that owns boards? You'll find a lot of devs are happy to do things in their spare time. Plenty won't and none should be forced, but the open source software movement is massive. Just think of any number of small project applications you can find out there for people to use. Hell game mods are numbered in the millions and arguably many need far more technical expertise than doing UI fixes, which a lot of these seem to be?

Is there any chance of getting the old First Class Lounge back I wonder?

People have offered to help with developer work and would the company be open to being taken over, are those type options on the table if it goes ahead and is failing?

I agree. To be honest we got a good few more years than I expected… so I think all in things worked out better than had we just shut down 3+ years ago. My blood pressure might not agree however…

Its not a massive change to be honest…. I had the same concerns. Its a bit of a freshen up and Ill see can we share some of the screens and minor changes.

We looked at it - the only way it works is if its a complete sale. All contributions welcome btw and we do engage with people who help across a number of areas.

The issue isn't really the site software now although undoubtedly some of the bugs did drive users away. The main problem is the loss of traffic and consequently revenue due to Google changing their algorithm.

What the site therefore needs to do is find a way to getting more users to engage more. Easier said than done of course especially when you have no budget.

Agree. We will look at adding this to the charter. Also agree on mods and admin support. That is a bigger conversation that I said we would address before and I have not - Ill come back with some thoughts on moving forward separately.
