Well he was active on here in the past 30 minutes so I imagine he's reading this thread.

There’s a lot of social history on the site with probably covid been the most important . I presume the National Library would be interested .

Personally I would subscribe but i don’t think there’s any hope of getting the numbers required

Well with just over 19,000 registered users at the last count going by Mikes numbers the site needs just over 10% of them to pay a sub. It's not as bad as it could be but still not the best.

That tread from the lad that thought his grinds tutor was coming on to him deserves to be in the National Library tbf.

19 years on here, was very useful over many topics for me. From building a house, photography, cycling, and anything else to everything else. €50 annual sub I'm fine with that. Seems there's a lot of knowledge available to "owners" regarding future platforms, would be silly not to take any advice, assistance being offered. Fingers crossed that it survives and thrives.

I wonder how many of those are daily/weekly users, and how many haven't signed into the site in months or years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,831 ✭✭✭con747

Also double accounts registered and so on, I know! It will be a push to get there.

I don't think I'd be too happy with funding something that is going to be used for free by a shower who think rules shouldn't apply to them. This thread alone has demonstrated the need for change ... and that is change from the bottom to the top.

It's not like the mods on Reddit are any better. "Huh, my post has disappeared." "Huh, mine too." Mod: "I changed the sub's rules. You didn't read them. Banned!"

Just me, another random user who's been around a while (more reading than posting I admit) but will be sad to see boards go away.

Been many changes throughout the years but boards has always been a place to come back to for real knowledge and the occasional arguement, not the I Googled this answer for you stuff.

The content collected over the years is worth archiving somewhere.

Boards only has 19,000 users? Surely there has to be more than that?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,199 ✭✭✭bogman_bass

there is no shortage of of undecideds platforms out there and as we’ve seen with the likes of Twitter it doesn’t make it better.

Now on saying that I mainly use tgg he e farming and Forestry forums and they have been well modded in the whole . Perhaps the ones you use are different

I would have thought way less. If you take out the couple of dozen very high volume posters, who posts 20+ times per day, every day, then there are very low volumes of new posts. If you look at the landing page now, there's probably what, 20 or 30 posts in the past hour? By how many posters - a dozen? I'd be surprised if there were much more than 1,000 users who post regularly. My guess is that around a quarter of the posts on the site are made by the same very small coterie of posters, probably no more than 30-40.

Is there a way to pay the annual fee of €50?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 29,368 ✭✭✭✭_Kaiser_

On that point, if indeed the shutters come down I will want all my user/posting data deleted beforehand @Boards.ie: Mike

As such, if there is no warning before this happens, please take this post as the request to do so on the last day the site is live.

I've been here over 20 years. I've no interest in my history being sold off to recoup some costs (if that's what happens).

If I could thank this a thousand times, I would. I've been a (prolific, as you can see from my post count) member here for about 16 years between this and my previous account and I can probably count the number of mod interactions I've had on both hands. Some were warranted, some I felt were heavy-handed, but that's the way of life. Can the people who are running full-tilt into warnings and bans on a repeated basis genuinely not see that there's generally only one common denominator??? You know what they say, folks, if you meet an asshole in the morning, you met an asshole, but if you meet assholes all day...

For my money, Boards never recovered from theDDoS attack a few years back. So, so many users just never returned after that. The cocked-up migration to Vanilla did the rest of the damage. The jumpy-page issue is the equivalent of a fruit fly in your wine glass in comparison to those, imo.

I'd be gutted to see Boards go, but I'm not sure this solution - as proposed, anyway - is the answer.

You made a new account just to post that? Not sus at all.

    I'd echo that too.

I also don't want my data passed on without being consulted.
I'm sure there must be GDPR issues in doing that.

I certainly don't want a 'boards community' in possession of my data either.

Can I ask @Boards.ie: Mike and @Boards.ie: Odhran what happens user data if the site does come to an end or is sold/passed on?

3:49 PM - just over 24 hours since this thread was posted.

    Only 167 thanks on Mike's opening post. 167x6 = 1002

No chance it's going to hit 2000 monthly subs at this rate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,301 ✭✭✭✭AbusesToilets

Hadn't realised the subscriptions had ended. Subbed up years ago, but had noticed the sub-only forums seemed had disappeared. Have the published a portal for the subscription yet?

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

In fairness, you’re correct - vast majority of the site is well modded and actually doesn’t need much modding - my comments were more directed at the CA forum and happy to clarify that point now.
But I also recognise that it’s those precious forums like forestry etc that will suffer the most if boards goes- they are boards greatest asset- maybe the focus now should be on getting members from all those great specialist topics forums, to agree where they should move to if /when boards.ie does fail

Not everyone thanks posts though, I didn't thank it and will be paying up when the time comes. Also just because there's only just over 19,000 registered users at last count the site had over half a million visits by unregistered users which will be a lot of the same people most likely but still people who might want to keep the site alive and pay a sub every now and then to make up the numbers. We don't, well I don't want to see it die like most genuine posters here.

I'll happily pay a sub, I value this site a lot, for a variety of reasons.

Could @Boards.ie: Mike list maybe 10 things that will change/ go in Vanilla now to the rolled back version if Boards is saved? I think posters would like to see what they're being offered to pay for and whether it's value for money.

Some posters have been asking about financial information of the site. From a quick look at the accounts Boards made a profit in 2023 and 2024 on paper but had losses from the previous years to effectively cancel those profits. The 2024 profit was less than half of the 2023 profit but there's no breakdown of where that difference was caused (increase in costs/ decrease in revenue etc)

There's also quite a large amount of Creditors but again no breakdown if that figure is for external suppliers or the directors.

I haven't mentioned the specific figures in the accounts but they are available from the CRO.

I have read a couple of posts saying they don't believe Google's AI is responsible for a drop in traffic to the site but a photography podcast I listen to actually mentioned something about it. Traffic to his own site is down 30/40 % I believe and within a few years the ratio is to be 80% AI results and 20% directly to a link to a site from a search result.

[In CA that would earn me a warning for ignoring moderator's instructions about anecdotes] forgive the attempt at humour

I’ve no problem paying the €50 sub fee this site has saved me way more than €50 over the years.

There's a pretty strong technical presence on boards, I know at least 5 other devs/software architects/cloud ops folks on this site in real life and lord knows there's plenty other ones in the techy forums.
Can we leverage this knowledge? Look at taking a small slice of the DB and trialing the data against other forum software options?
Look to see how the technical limitations can be overcome?

It's a bit like having a family of doctors with a someone under the weather and not getting advice from the room here.

Look at how useful the open source enhancement suite is? people are already putting in workarounds for boards as it is, I've already gone looking for ways to archive threads in case they disappear that are important to me. I really think there's a trick being missed here not involving the community more
