I have very fond memories of Castlevania 3. I loved how you could take alternative paths towards Dracula in the game, making the playthroughs more interesting.

Just recently completed Lords of the Fallen 2.0 getting the Radiant ending. A bit janky compared to Fromsoft’s offerings but still very enjoyable.

At the moment I’m almost finished Axiom Verge (Old school 2D Metroid clone). After I finish Nier Automata I’ll move on to the Final Fantasy VII remake. I never got into the FF games much because I hate turn based combat. The remake switches to real time combat so I’m really looking forward to checking it out.

    1. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle [Xbox]
    2. Avowed [Xbox]
    3. Snake Pass [Xbox]
    4. Bully [Xbox]

    Bully

Very good game. Bit dated though in both gameplay and graphics compared to newer games but still decent. I managed to get the achievement for passing 9 classes but not six. It must have glitched out. Mind you if I was playing again I would do classes and races at the beginning. I didn't. I waited till the end after I had finished all the missions as they actually give you bonuses to help during the game plus the go kart would have been handy to have to get around rather than skateboard and bike like I was using.

Tomb Raider 3: The Lost Artifact

Finally polished off all the Tomb Raider trilogy remake content with this, the previously PC only expansion to TR3.

The TR expansions were basically core design giving one designer free reign to create whatever they liked and they really went to town. This TR3 expansion, like the TR2 expansion is better than anything in the base game with some incredible pieces of level design. It's also impressive how it uses secrets for some environmental storytelling. Definitely worth playing if you plan to play the trilogy. There's a lot of unique locations and assets here so it doesn't just feel like a mod of the base game.

GAME: Metal Slug || PLATFORM: PC

I knew I was not that good at side-scrolling shooters, but I didn't realise how terrible I actually was until I played this. Unlimited continues kept me going, otherwise this game was hard as nails. I just don't have the reaction times available to me these days lol Nevertheless it's a fun arcade shooter. I'm gonna jump into Metal Slug X it's actually a lot of fun regardless of how brutal it is :)

GAME: Metal Slug X || PLATFORM: PC

Pretty much the same experience as the original.

Which begs my question; I always did wonder what the actual differences were between all the Metal Slug games besides new weapons. I have booted pretty much all of 'em at least once in my entire life and I haven't been able to separate any of them at all. They're fun - no question about it - but I just dunno what they innovate with each new instalment (again, minus the weapons.. and I suppose enemies and setting).

As someone that is a Contra sicko, metal slug is on a different level. You can get good at them but by stage 3 they are getting very difficult and stage 4 and beyond, they are designed to steal your quarters. You can get good, it just takes practice and patience.

There's really only 4 Metal Slug games, 1, 2, X and 3. X is a remaster of 2 as 2 was released with a bug that caused massive slowdown. I'm not a big fan of 3, it's just too long and the difficulty is ramped way too high but it seems to be a fan favourite.

When SNK went bust different developers took over. 4 is garbage and mostly reused assets and 5 is a bit better but not great. Not much experience of the rest.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,664 ✭✭✭Gamer Bhoy 89

nice insight, dude. Yeah I had to go into a wikipedia rabbit hole to find out what the hell the X series were. I thought Double X was a remaster of 3 but it's a remaster of 7, which I found weird. I only have 1, 2, X, 3 and XX on hand at the moment. The thing with these games is; I know they're short, so I expect to be done with them within the hour. If I know it's gonna stretch past the hour I'll usually stick a podcast or music on while I play, provided there's no dialogue/story beats - with these games they're as arcade as they come.

I don't mind the difficulty too much, but like you said, it's there to suck yer 20p's but I was looking at the achievements out of curiousity and there was one for beating the entire game without using a continue. How anyone is able to do that in less than 3 deaths I'm honestly impressed. Not only that but keeping the prisoners saved for an entire level is a challenge unto itself. One death and you revoke them all.

They are fun games, but god almighty they're definitely cabinet games through and through.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,150 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

The thing about these games is you are meant to just play them for 1 quarter and get good at them. Quarter feeding them is the wrong way to play. You can breeze through them in an hour or so but you are meant to spend 40-100 hours getting better.

Modern games are very handholdy and expect every player to beat them and get to the end. This isn't me complaining that modern gamers are soft but more that this is how they are conditioned to play games and any form of friction to them causes them frustration and to blame the game. I mean eve the souls games make concessions compared to older games. Modern games have to be this way because of how they are designed.

What's been an eye opener for me is on the arcade and retro forum where we pick an arcade game and play for a fortnight, 1 credit highest score. Really changes how you appreciate the game design.

Just bought this on a whim played the original back in 2005. Looked lovely on the pro and action heavy. I know RE4 is built to be replayed but I never did might give it another spin.

Currently delving into death stranding 2 still at the start but I think its a notable improvement on the first.

For almost 30 years I've only ever managed to beat the Arcade Mode. Managed to stress my way through Original (story) Mode for the first time this morning.

If you don't get the right upgrades at the right time you can really mess up your playthrough. I managed to do it right this time.

    Dragon Quest Monster

What do you do if you own the biggest videogame franchise in Japan but a new usurper has arrived featuring 151 colourful and iconic critters? What do you do when your mega franchise has a massive bestiary of its own monsters created by legendary illustrator Akira Toriyama, many of which are equally if not more iconic in Japanese culture. You rip off your rival is what you do.

Well to say that Dragon Quest Monsters is a rip off is a little unfair. DQ has had monster collecting elements well before Pokemon and this game differentiates itself from Pokemon in ways that make it superior, and some areas where it's not so much. It was however a great foundation for much games in the Monsters spin off that are as enjoyable as anything in the main series.

Development was subcontracted to legendary Ghost developer Tose but strangely it's one of the few games were Tose and it's developers are credited in its development. The game reminds of of Persona 3. Both games make the most of a limited budget, reusing art assets from other games while creating an interesting hub area and randomly generating its dungeons.

DQM's story takes place during the youth of DQ4 fan favourite Terry. During one night his sister is stolen away and he is brought to the Kingdom of Great Tree, a town set in a giant tree. Terry is told that if he is ever to see his sister again he must win the starry night tournament, held against other tree kingdoms, which will grant him one wish.

The entire game is set in this tree kingdom with new routes and shops opening as you progress in the story. "Gates" will open around the kingdom that lead to randomly generated dungeons and it is here that you can battle and befriend new monsters and take on the boss of the dungeon. An important feature of DQM is the ability to breed monsters with one another to create new monsters and if they are powerful enough they can even earn bonuses that reduce exp requirements to level up. Monsters can come in male and female which can lead to problems if you are unlucky enough to end up with an all male of female group of monsters. You can change the sex of monsters during breeding but it's fiddly and costs gold which is quite a scarce commodity in this game.

The battle system is where the game is way ahead of pokemon. It uses the traditional DQ battle system but you control 3 monsters. They all learn a variety of enemy moves from the DQ series. There's a lot of strategy here as you don't have the resources to survive the longer dungeons without planning and bosses are vulnerable to status effects and debuffs which can be essential for tougher fights.

Initially I found DQM a superior take on pokemon. The battle system was way better and presented a decent challenge. However by end of the game the randomly generated dungeons were getting very long and I was kind of hoping the game would finish up. I probably would have inhaled this game when I was younger and there's a load of post game content I didn't even touch.

    18. Hammerin' Hero (PSP)

    Hammerin' Hero

This is the last game released in Irem's Hammering Harry series. The series has graced the arcades as well as various consoles and while relatively unknown it's always provided top quality 2D platforming action. This PSP game is no different, feeling like a long lost 2.5D platforming classic that you would get on the PS1. I initially thought this game never made it to Europe but it did under the stupid title of "Gen San". No wonder it's the rarest version of one of the rarest PSP games.

The Hammerin' Harry series follows the exploits of Tamura/Harry, a lowly carpenter that sets out with his hammer in tow to thwart greedy property developers from tearing up the town and building over it. Hero stays pretty much on brand by recycling this story. Harry's journey takes him across 10+ stages ranging from his home town, a TV station, a baseball and volleyball game, and of course Outer Space.

Hammerin' Hero is a very simple 2.5D action game. You have a jump and two attacks. One swings your weapon in a vertical arc that can knock some enemies forward while the second is a horizontal arc that sends enemies into the background. The game makes use of this mechanic for many secrets and boss fights and reminds me of Klonoa in a way. Stages are pretty short, anything from 2-7 minutes but as you only have one hit before you lose a life, they are pretty difficult, without becoming frustrating. It's a fairly short game but the sheer variety of challenges and boss battles means it's never boring. It really feels like a classic SNES or Megadrive game.

The game has a gag manga aesthetic. There's a lot of using stuff happening in the backgrounds, a lot of which you can affect. The game has this strange emotion system where you can affect bystanders emotions by hitting a big emotion bubble over their head. Aot of times this just leads to a visual gag but sometimes it will lead to something beneficial. There's even a collection aspect where you receive some amusing letters from people whose lives you've improved. I'm also a fan of the Irem fan service with R-Types iconic R9 spaceship making a few appearances towards the end.

Hammerin' Hero is a wonderful throwback to the design of action games from the 16bit era. It's loads of fun with plenty of amusing visuals and moments. Id definitely recommend this one if you dig out your PSP or Vita.

    1. The case of the golden idol (Xbox): A point and click puzzle game. Originally started it in late 2024 to tick the box for the xbox achievements, but I really enjoyed this. I added the 2 DLCs (The Spider of Lanka and The Lemurian Vampire), and finished these off last night. The DLC wasn't as good, and some of the puzzles were overly complicated to the point of relying on guesswork, but the main game was excellent with a quirky humour too. There is a sequel to the game (The Rise of the Golden Idol) which I believe is free on mobile with Netflix, so I'll have to take a look at that.
    2. Spider-man Remastered (PC/Steamdeck): I played this on the PS4, but really enjoyed this playthrough on the steam deck. Ran perfectly most of the time and the gameplay is great. Swinging around New York is very satisfying. The voice cast here is excellent too. Played the 3 DLC stories too (Under the banner of The City that Never Sleeps). Moving onto Miles Morales game now.
    3. The Rise of the Golden Idol (Android): This is the sequel to the case of the golden idol and I really enjoyed this too. It's free on Android if you have a Netflix account and playing this on a tablet was a much better experience than playing the first on Xbox. The first game is also on Android via Netflix games, so I'd go that route if you want to play either. Like the first, there is a quirk sense of humour and there is an overall story tying the various scenarios together. Also like the first, some of the puzzles are so complication that you kind of have to just guess, but it's good fun all the same.
    4. Call of Duty - Black Ops 2 (Xbox): Towards the end of last year I played Black Ops 6 which I really enjoyed so I decided to go back and play the older titles. I enjoyed Black Ops 1 too, but boy did I not like this game. The story is split between the past and future (although the future was 2025, so we are the future now) and I just didn't enjoy it. I didn't care about the story and I found the mechanics a little bit clunky. I don't know, just wasn't for me. I have started Black Ops 3 now (I picked up both games at same time in CEX) and it seems better, so I'll probably play through that next.
    5. Spider-man Mile Morales (PC/Steamdeck): I loved the original Spider-man, so figured this would be good too. It was at times, but I found it hard to get stuck into the story. I like how the mechanics are deliberately not as smooth as Spider-man (because Miles is still learning), but it was only okay. I put this game down ages ago, and only because I'm down with the flu decided to pick it back up this week to finish it. No interest in going back to do all the little side-quests to 100% it which is telling.
    6. Botany Manor (PC): Thanks to @JimBurnley and their recommendation I downloaded this last week and finished it just now (it leaves gamepass at midnight so just got it in). Lovely little puzzle game where you wander around a manor potting flowers and making them grow. The difficulty wasn't too high and logic made the puzzles okay to follow. Completed it with all achievements too.
    7. Descenders (Xbox): This isn't a game you "complete" really, as it's a prodecurally generated downhill bike game. But I did get through the full course from start to finish which triggered the credits so I'll take it. Quite a fun game, not much to it, but something that is great to stick on for like 15/20 mins. I had been struggling to find any game to get into for ages, but enjoying this and still tipping away at it.
    8. Spray Paint Simulator (PC): These games are objectively boring. Just move your mouse about for an hour to spray paint a van. But they really scratch an itch, cleared it just now. The bridge level was rough though for anyone who has gotten through it already.
    9. Nice day for fishing (PC): This is a game set in the Epic NPC Man world if you know that from youtube (here's an example), a simple enough pixel-art game where you play as a fisherman and do quests and stuff. Played on my ROG Ally, was perfect for that, enjoyable game. Not too complicated or anything, but fun.

Fun little Mario game, but it took me forever to get the hang of the jumping. It feels insanely different to the NES games and it just threw me off at times.

    GAME: Castlevania Legends

    PLATFORM: Game Boy

Decent game but found it a little too simplified compared to other titles that came before it. Understandable I guess, considering it's on Game Boy. The levels were pretty long as well and I was feeling a bit fed up by the end. Had it contained more power ups I probably would've enjoyed it more but I guess it is what it is. I doubt ill ever go back to it.

I want to play this one eventually. I played about half of it years ago and got bored. Don't let it put you off the Gameboy castlevania's, CV2 Belmont's Revenge is amazing.

As for CV Adventure.... Eh it's ok. I like it but I understand all the criticism of that game. Banging soundtrack though.

    GAME: Castlevania Chronicles

    PLATFORM: PlayStation

Yikes, this one almost made me wanna throw my controller out the window :P

My biggest enemy with this game was the timer, actually. It pretty much pressures you into getting a move-on. I got to the Grim Reaper and managed to beat him after numerous attempts, but by the time the orb showed up, the timer hit 0 before I could touch it. So I had to replay the level as a result. Absolute nightmare. Did I abuse save-states going forward? Yes, yes I did. I have no shame as a result.

Nonetheless, fantastic game regardless. I can't believe I missed out on this one - I had no idea they developed a remake of the original. Makes sense that I missed it considering it came out in 2001 over here for PS1.

It is pretty boring compared to the others. I'll definitely give Belmont's Revenge a go at some stage.

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 54,150 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

There's actually numerous remakes of CV1. Super Castlevania 4 is another. I remember Chronicles came pretty late on PS1 when the PS2 was already out. I was very excited as it's a port of a Japanese only X68000 which is itself 90s very expensive and very powerful computer. It wasn't a game you could play easily. It's legendarily difficult. I beat the new mode they made for PS1 which halves the damage you take but the original game mode I got stuck on Medusa.

Return to Monkey Island [PS5] - An old fashioned point and click adventure game starring a somewhat incompetent wannabe pirate called Guybrush Ulysses Threepwood on his adventures. There is a lot of humour in this game and those that remember the older games from the 90’s will know what to expect.

GRIS [PS5] - A puzzle/platformer and an absolute visual masterpiece with some amazing art design, along with beautifully soothing music. This game is a pleasure to play and whilst not overly challenging it is a must play if you need something to relax to.

Golf Club Wasteland [PS5] - I got this game for €1.49 and what a hidden gem it turned out to be. A 2D side scrolling puzzle golf game set on post-apocalyptic Earth with an amazing soundtrack and background radio narrative. The story is engaging and quite moving, especially as the game progresses. The crazy golf style of gameplay is both challenging and fun but the story is what really cements things.

Planet of Lana [PS5] - A puzzle adventure game where you embark on an adventure with a cat companion to aid you on the way. Your planet has been taken over by evil machines intent on taking all the inhabitants prisoner. You must work through many environmental puzzles avoiding danger as you try to rescue a friend and save the planet. Think along the lines of Limbo or Inside, although not quite as dark in atmosphere as those two. Well worth a playthrough.

Dishonored: Death of the Outsider [PS5] - The third in the series and a shorter game than the first 2. You play as Billie Lurk, a lesser character from the previous games. Your goal is to kill the entity known as the Outsider. There are various ways to approach this game from brutal force to stealth. You have less powers available than in the other games. I enjoyed this but I'm saddened as we'll likely never see another Dishonored game, a series which I love.

The Callisto Protocol [PS5] - A third-person survival horror game set on Jupiter's moon Callisto. Think along the lines of Dead Space but shorter and more linear. You try to escape a maximum-security prison where the inmates have turned into hideous creatures and in the process try to uncover what is actually happening. This is graphically stunning and I loved it. I prefer shorter, more linear games as I just don’t have the time for longer games these days.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Got this for free so can't complain about it being a short game. Taking place in a single, dense map with heavy focus on stealth, this a standalone prologue to The Phantom Pain. The main aim is to rescue two prisoners from a Guantanomo Bay like detention camp in Cuba, with the emphasis being heavily put on stealth as a guns a blazing approach is not ideal especially when carrying an injured prisoner on your back. An enjoyable game but I wouldn't pay more than €5 considering its length.

100% of screens visited and puzzle solved on Starquake, on the ZX spectrum. This can still be played online at Torinak (google it) along with a load of other older spectrum games. . Of course with Starquake, if you want to get 100% of screens visited, you MUST visit the bottom left hand corner of the map ASAP. There is also a world map of the SQ arena online showing the layout of all the screens

    GAME: Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow

    PLATFORM: PC

The whole game pretty much reminded me of Symphony of the Night. The enemy variety wasn't very varied, either. Nevertheless it was a fun game with a pretty good story. Great variety of weapons at least. Probably one of the best ones I've played.

    ======================================

    GAME: Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge

    PLATFORM: Game Boy Advance

This was a little more enjoyable than the prior entry, however - two special items was a bit ****. I was never a fan of the axe (I'm a holy water guy) and one thing that really puzzled me was how my projectiles would sometimes completely disappear, like I had to grab another whip upgrade to get them again. I wasn't paying attention to what was depleting that made this happen — small things like that are what confused me but I still enjoyed my time with it.

Managed to beat it while I was on the bus from work.

    GAME: Castlevania: Bloodlines

    PLATFORM: Mega Drive

For a while I thought I was doing pretty good on this one. I didn't die that much, and the whip, when it's fully upgraded, is very OP. Well… until I got to the rotating stairs and the mindfeck of a room in the final stage. I kept falling to my death. Also, I was absolutely seething — I got to Dracula and I accidentally closed the game window like an idiot. Went into the password screen to reload stage 5 or 6 and I lost all my points :(

Great game, though - very satisfying. Up there as one of my favourites. Would definitely go back to it. I would also love a physical copy until I saw the price. Like for christ's sake I hate being a retro collector in this day and age.

Could get a repro cart but……just isn't the same, is it? I guess - having said that - I do buy my games to play them, not gawk at them. Might consider a purchase of a repro as it's only £50.

It's a class game. Konami went all out on it and it michiro's Castlevania debut on the soundtrack. I much prefer it to Rondo and Super CV4. It just feels more... Classic.

Make sure you pick up a US copy as the PAL version has some unfortunately censorship on gore.
