I was never in the Announcements Forum before! I only saw this post because it was posted as a sticky and linked to at the top of the Radio Forum. Could moderators do the same for the Music, Film and Television Forums please?

Been here for well over 20 years in total, have been a subscriber for years too. Clarification: I'm on my 2nd user name. Always loved it, never been in the 'inner circle', part of the 'in-crowd', but it's been a part of my life and a nice and interesting one at that.

But it's just not the same anymore. Not so much vanilla, always been more of a desktop/laptop user and it's not sooo different on those devices imo.

its more the site has changed. First AH and such were nerfed. Maybe boards wanted to be more mature. Maybe that had commercial background. I dont know but taking the infantile and feckless side away changed boards. It became a bit boring.

Then - I guess it probably started like with so many things that have gone tits up with covid - CA and politics became polarised and confrontational and boards moderation started to take sides if you like. They will deny it and they do deny it but they did/do. Some opinions are more 'wanted' than others and some pretty awful stuff is happening to which boards turns a blind eye to. And you get booted out for having an opinion. And boards became even more boring.

So I dont know whether I'd pay again. It's just not that a big a thing to me anymore. It'll be a sad day for sure if it shuts down but if thats the way it will go then what can you do. All good things must come to an end as they say.

^ It's fair unbelievable that they haven't done this across all forums especially the hobby etc forums ie DIY, Gardening, Weather, Farming, Roads, Transport etc etc are all places that have been quoted both here and on reddit as extremely valuable to the userbase.

I mean, even the announcement is botched!

    Cmon, finger out time boards.

there's gotta be a multi-millionaire (regular) user who is happy to write a cheque - tap them up.

Maybe that’s a sign in itself - best those forums you mention and the other great forums “self-organise” now- before it’s too late - I think that’s probably the key positive of this announcement - it’s giving quality forums, just a little time, to make a plan “b”

I'm sure the prison forum still exists somewhere in the ether, they should make it visible to regular users again, fuckit, if we're going down make all mod only forums visible to all

I'll pay annually. 50 quid is very little in this day and age.

If this announcement had come 10 months ago I'd have been in with a payment, no problem. I'm not a heavy poster in the 14 years here with only about 1,200 since the vanilla change, but I do check-in and read the site every day, because I like it and like and respect a lot of the contributors here

Would I pay now?, well no frankly - The changes to the site that can happen with choices made by the top brass just makes it too risky. After months of not been allowed to comment on the issues we were experiencing, we eventually got our chance in a feedback thread. All these issues (moderation in particular) were shouted from the rooftops and were duly ignored

There was a truly shocking 'Take it or leave it' attitude displayed so blaming Google on the lack of visitors is a bit of a cop out tbh - This graph of traffic analytics coincides with a change of modding at the start of the year and also with a new radio forum charter in Feb - Anyone got a graph of the radio forum figures?

    boards graph 07 2025.jpg

Personally, I have spent 4 months this year in a self-inflicted 'read only, non-contributory mode' as a personal, silent protest of the way the site was going, and also not knowing what comment would be sanctioned and what wouldn't - and going by the above graph, I wasn't alone. When in my last post on June 9th, I tried to bring the gravity of the situation to light, I got a one point warning for my trouble

I just checked there and a thread I follow in CA that is normally really busy has had 4 posts today

The place was working fine when Beasty was knocking about

Now there's a thought, a user generated boards.ie v2 not the heap of shyte we got with the big migration.

I see the forum gamers are organising with the reopening of forumofgames.com

Maybe that's the future - the users establishing a new platform if this place doesn't turn a dime for the owner (I mean, it won't ever…)

Now to defend and preserve the vast generated user content…I'll be very angry if the Trent archive is nuked.

Selling this would unironically raise more money than nearly anything else they could come up with.

I probably will subscribe if it's the only means to save the site but I don't think it's sustainable and will probably only postpone the inevitable for a year or two. Is there a plan to drive traffic to the site?

If the subscription model is to be a success things will have to change around here. If you hit your goal of 2k subscribers that's at least €100k in revenue + whatever else from advertising. Subscribers will want honesty and transparency on where the money is going.

Secondly, how the site is administered at the top will also need reform. The admin team needs to be broadened. The site will also need to recognise that it's user bases views of the world have shifted substantially in the last number of years.

I'll be sad to see boards go. And yet it feels inevitable especially given the hit and run nature of this post with no response to the questions raised.

I'm on the footy section every day. Probably half a dozen times a day or more (during the current Bryan Mbeumo - Man United saga lol)

But any time I'm looking for information in an Irish setting, I search for that topic on boards.ie.

Cost of a land registry map. Robot mowers. Info on the new landlord rent protection zones. VOIP providers. Tyre suppliers. Solar panels. Hundreds of other queries.

Jeez the solar page in the renewable thread has probably saved users into the hundreds of thousands of € because of the advice given and the redirection to better value installers. I count myself in that number, got a good recommendation there and saved a few grand on my install.

On the flip side, I too have fallen foul of one of the well known bully mods a few years back. I'm sure lots of people will think of the same name right away…

Although I actually challenged one of his rulings, appealed it to a higher power and won lol.

I had many PMs after that from his past victims, congratulating me for beating him (or her).

Theres not a fukn hope you'll get 2000 paid subs. Not when posters get banned for bullshit reasons and for months at a time. Boards isn't reddit and ye can't afford to lose the traffic when ye can just remove comments that are too spicy for ye.

    Good luck though.

As can be seen mine could do with a refresh.

Id go for a white version too.

Every popular non current affairs forum will likely jump ship soon - EV car forum for example - that’s one of the busiest and helpful forums on boards.ie- I can’t see that “not” surviving somewhere else

If a forum needs 120,000 euro a year to function then it should be closed. You could host this forum in it's current state on a raspberry pi.

Would be happy to get an annual sub, well worth it for the soccer forum alone for me, along with the 3 or 4 other ones I poke my head into. Definitely well worth adding a 'donate' button too, in case there's any generous benefactors out there.

I would hope that, if things do go south, that a decent notice period would be given so communities could at least have a chance to migrate somewhere else.

Genuinely sad to hear about this. Been on the site for 20 years. I'd be gutted to see it go.

Moved elsewhere after the move to Vanilla, but came back recently. No other site really provides such a broad range of topics in one place, got loads of good advice here too.

It should be given over to the community or let have a dignified death.

So everyone is experiencing the jumping !!! I thought it was just the drink ??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,630 ✭✭✭Slutmonkey57b

The site never recovered from the horrendous vanilla move. An important part of that wasn't just the downtime, it was the horrific user experience of the vanilla platform. It took weeks and months to get the site back into a workable, useful format after it came back up.

TBH, that should have been a sign that the move was a fundamental mistake. It's not as if vanilla is the only forum architecture available.

Paying a subscription might be worth it, but not if the result is going back to standard vanilla host.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,666 ✭✭✭archfi

Would be great if the end comes that all of those could be hosted on one platform with donations/subs for hosting and maintenance.

That'd have to be organised to make sure the very valuable users would migrate - again, IF this place ends up dead.

There's a load of top skills available across many roles on this here boards that never appear to have been utilised much.
