I will probably sub also as I've been here 23 years and would hate to see it go, even in it's current less than user friendly state. However if it goes back to the even more unusable basic Vanilla it might be time to just call it a day.

I'm going to ask a really dumb stupid ignorant question.

Is there any way that, if enough of us subscribe, that we can have it back to the way it was pre-upgrade?

Will anyone break the 100k posts mark before it shuts down?

    Bloody hell.

16 years and nearly 12k posts.

I think a big part of the issue is that moderation style over the years pushed a lot of posters away. Before asking for money, maybe look at whether the same approach is still helping or hurting. It would be good to see an open discussion on that too.

I'll pay. Boards.ie isn't perfect but it's authentic in a way that's going to become increasingly rare in the future.

I'll throw 50 quid, I've spent over a decade on here and would like to see it continue.

Reality is though ye are probably pissing in the wind, the internet landscape has totally changed. Run an Irish e-commerce site myself, ai results and the launch of Amazon.ie are killing us in the ad space. It's over for the little guy :(

I'm on boards 20 years and I'd still be sorry to see it go, so I probably will pay.

But this past year I've definitely lost a lot of love for the site due to moderation policies - first time I've felt that way in 20 years (never been banned or even warned). So a little bit of me does hesitate and think is it still worth saving now? For nearly two decades Pets was the only section I felt I needed to avoid (despite it being relevant to my work and main interests), but do I really want to pay now while feeling unable to post meaningfully in CA and Radio too? It's sad to me to have that hesitation now.

And this is closing the gate after the horse has bolted. Ye should of got subs in when ye had vBulletin to cover the cost, there has been an exodus since ye moved to a vastly inferior product in vanilla.

I'll likely sign up. I don't get the value I use to though. It's heard to find new threads in all forums I follow on mobile for example. It was much easier on the old platform with the my threads, my forums, trending tabs.

This thread doesn't even appear on the home page on desktop, despite someone posting just now.

Going back to the 2021 version of the site, post-Vanilla, would be a disaster (again!) for user retention.

    Nobody wants an easier time.

Users want to see rules implemented fairly across the board.

In boards recent history there's been an acceptance of having to put up with some mods applying rules when and where it suits them and allowing their own biases to influence their approach to the task of moderation.

When the site is coming to the user cap in hand for the survival of what they describe as an online community there needs to be some changes made to how things are working with certain individuals involved in volunteering here.

If you feel that your not being paid means you're going to have-at the user base it's probably not a good omen for the idea of boards being an online community that has much time left.

It speaks to an attitude that has contributed in no small part to where the site finds itself now.

Is boards.ie not owned by daft/donedeal/ The Journal or some relation of the Fallon brothers?

Yeah, the Bargain Alert 30 quid smart watch and this thread happening on the same day kinda proves that out.

Ya I also only heard about this because of Reddit which really highlights the issue with vanilla tbh.

Happy to contribute monthly if it helps keep boards alive. A lot of us use it for chats and checking in with other posters, lots of little communities in different forums. Although I will say that imo , after the switch to Vanilla, the site seemed to lose it's sense of community as a whole.

Happy to pay too as I use this site a lot.

I’ve been a member for the bones of 20 years. It was great back in the day and even now it’s a great source of information of Ireland specific things but it is a shadow of its former self in the past few years. Honestly I don’t see the sub route being sustainable or the way forward. It might just kick the closure down the road a little.

I hope the site can be transferred to someone else if only as a read-only site so the info is not lost.

While I prefer the boards.ie format I do find myself on Reddit more often and I think we’ll all be fine after the closure. Just maybe a few new subreddits need to be created such as Irish Bargain alerts!

This relationship ended a few years ago. It was part of the group, then it went back to the original owners.

That's a good shout - but it would appear that there's no distinction on Vanilla/Boards now for who has opted in for marketing messages, etc. Now - is this classed as of importance and not marketing (and refers to service), that is the question.
