    Dear Boards.ie Community,

We want to have an open and honest conversation about the future of Boards.ie.

A few years ago, we made the difficult but necessary decision to migrate from our legacy platform to Vanilla. It wasn’t perfect - and we know many of you haven’t been happy with it - but it kept the site alive. Had we not made that move, Boards.ie would have gone offline three years ago. The Vanilla platform may not feel like the Boards of old, but without it, we simply wouldn’t be here today.

Thanks to significant cash investment and huge effort from the team - Boards staff, Mods, Admins, and volunteers - we brought the business to break-even and gave ourselves a window to stabilise.

However, recent changes to Google’s algorithm have had a dramatic impact, cutting our traffic in half almost overnight - and with it, our ad revenue. These changes, part of Google’s March 2025 update, have hit many community-driven sites hard, including Boards.ie. As a result, we’ve been pushed into an unsustainable position.

We’re now at a crossroads. Without a change to our financial position in the coming weeks, we will be forced to shut Boards.ie down.

Starting today, ads will be re-enabled across the site. From next week, we’re also introducing an Ad-Free Membership option. This subscription will help cover the basic running costs. If enough people support us through membership, our goal is to remove ads entirely. In the meantime, please consider whitelisting Boards.ie and disabling your ad blocker to help support the site.

    image.png

Our goal is to reach 2,000 paying members. We know that’s ambitious - but with a mix of member support and ad revenue, we believe we can keep the lights on.

As the world shifts toward AI, we believe Boards.ie’s role as Ireland’s online voice is more important than ever. Traffic is already a quarter of what it once was. For any business that depends on traffic and advertising revenue to survive, time is running out - and we’re no exception.

Boards.ie has stood the test of time for over 20 years. Now, its future is in your hands. We have a short window to make this work - and we hope this subscription model gets us over the line. But if no workable solution is found, we will have no choice but to close the site in the months ahead - something we truly hope to avoid.

We also want to add that this Sub feature will all be followed very soon by a platform cleanup. This cleanup will remove the heavy customisations that have been creating all of the bug and functionality issues. The customisations have been fighting with Vanilla updates at every turn. This newly cleaned up platform will see a much more standardised version of the vanilla product, Boards.ie branding features will help to maintain a more familiar feel on a modernised platform.

Thank you for your continued support,
    The Boards.ie Team.

Best of luck. Will gladly pay the small subscription to help keep the site alive.

Hi Mike, thanks for the update. Is there any sort of timelines in place where certain targets would need to be met to keep the site alive? I'd hate to think that one day the site is just offline and that's that.

Also - and this might not be appropriate for here - but if the site was to be closed, would there be a way to hand it over to the community rather than let it die?

    Hi Mike,

Firstly no problem signing up for a subscription, I'm also a firm believer that small independent platforms such as this, worts and all, are increasingly important going forward. Secondly, I'd actually thought I was still paying as I had been prior to the shift to Vanilla, never actually checked to see if any payments have gone through in recent times. Was paid subscription cancelled with the shift?

Very best of luck going forward and I sincerely hope we can keep this community afloat.

I'm happy to pay monthly also. I'd like to be able to say that boards has been a part of my life for 20 years in November.

Firstly, thank you for the update and transparency Mike.

Honestly, I can't say I'm surprised that the site has gotten to this point. I'm surprised it hasn't happened already!

I've no problem with the idea of potentially paying a sub towards the costs (ads are not a concern for me as I don't generally see them anyway on almost all sites I use).

I am more concerned about the idea of rolling back on the customisation of the Vanilla platform - something that was put in place in the first instance because out of box Vanilla was wholly unsuitable for the site and user expectations and experience.

Going back to that would suggest to me that it'll only hasten the end as even the users who remain get fed up with it?

However, I do have an important question... If indeed the end comes, will there be any consideration of handing it entirely to the community? There are plenty of business minded folks here, technical and project management experts, marketing people etc who even now would probably jump at the chance to contribute in a practical meaningful way beyond mere cash contributions.

    Also happy to pay.

Be shite if the internet became one big generic AI mess of responses ran by Google.

Maybe you can't see the picture for some reason but Mike has the sub costs in his post. €6 a month up to €50 for the year

I'd be happy to pay, just to keep the lights on.

And it's also good to get some clarity about the future of the site.

Yep I saw that on a refresh. Edited accordingly.

    Still happy to support

    One other suggestion...

I wouldn't rely on people seeing this as a banner notification.

I would suggest making it a top line sticky in the busiest forums as well - After Hours, CA Etc.

The more eyes are on this thread, the better chance of hitting the goals.

I would love if you could accept carrier billing, it'd give me something good to pay my three credits with! Maybe stick a shítty app (maybe vanilla could help with the shítty part) on the app store and charge that way?! Appreciate this way would cost a bit more after you factor in Google's cut but you might get a few more subs that way, there's always people looking at what they can spend their credit on.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I only actually saw this due to a fellow poster sticking up a link in a thread that's relatively busy - might it be an idea to make the announcement link bigger, bolder and a bit more urgent?

I value Boards and more particularly the conversations and acquaintances that I've made in my years here. The cost of running the site are only going one way and after stubbornly persevering through the disaster that has been the switch to vanilla? I'm not going to give up now 😉

I do have a concern regarding just what Boards sans-customisations will be like? The initial shift away from vbulletin was jarring for many and led to a lot of issues and drop in traffic. Will another raft of changes have the same result?

I do appreciate the openness in calling out a roadmap. I will be happy to at least stand an initial month or 2 sub to see how the changes develop and hope for the best.

It would be naive in the extreme for boards not to recognise the risk inherent in a new set of changes. There is also a real risk of losing even more of a long established user base to sites such as Reddit and even to the growing use of discord for chat group & forum style discussions. It may well transpire that even with subs, a continuing decline in traffic makes this site in it's current guise untenable.

I hope not, that the community here continues but, it may well be impossible to continue as a business in the longer term.

There needs to be an fair and equitable approach to moderation and how people are dealt with. A paid subscriber shouldn't be free to flout the rules and be abusive, and a non paying member shouldn't be treated harshly in comparison to a paid subscriber.

We've accepted a level of what you see is what you get in relation to how moderation is handled in recent times, and while moderation will remain voluntary and unpaid those undertaking it will now be dealing with customers as well as standard users, some adjustments are going to be needed particularly in additude, the status quo of mods and admins lambasting users can't really remain if the site wants to continue to exist.

You're asking for members to contribute to the ongoing viability of the site, and I like most people are happy to engage with that but there needs to be some acknowledgement of that from the front line troops in the moderation space. Some of what's been accepted here for the last few years will need to change as well.

Asking people to contribute financially and continuing with some of the carry on that's been observed here in recent times isn't going work.

Otherwise here's hoping boards continues to exist long into the future.

    Glazers Out!

Just as a reminder to people, the idea of subscribers isn't a new thing to the website, we had it on here for years. Allowed perks like changing your avatar, name and so on.

Cant see why it can't just be handled in the same way.

I'm 20 years on Boards next month, and one of the geriatric members 😁, I would miss it if it disappeared. I reckon I get €50's worth of use out of the site even though I don't find it as easy to explore as the old site was so I tend to stick to a couple of forums. Agree the notification needs to be a bit more splashy.

People at one point were voluntarily paying a 'subscription' fee. Myself included.

Boards decided to do away with that. Then decided to ignore all user feedback relating to the redesign and issues about user interaction. You guys doubled down on it.

I'm happy to pay for a service like this, but I'm not prepared to do so without assurances that the site and experience will not be made even worse

I'd be happy to pay a sub as long as the user experience remains the same.

Removing the customisation sounds like a bad idea to me and may make the site not feel like boards.ie anymore. If the site is just a generic vanilla clone then you'll have very hard time justifying the cost of a sub.

I've added a sticky in CA directing people here now. Might do it in the other forums I mod as well just to widen the net.

For those of us not in the know, what were the Google algorithm changes and how they caused a reduction in traffic?

Does boards.ie itself advertise anywhere? Maybe if any members have a prominent presence in the likes of tiktok, they could try direct people to the site that way, especially the under 25s if Google is not doing it.

More a lurker than poster but I would definitely not want boards to disappear, so will sub for a few months at least. Hopefully removing the boards specific customisations does not cause more of the regulars to disappear, not sure there was any love for vanilla Vanilla when it was first rolled out.

Cloudflare is cracking down on AI crawlers. Sites are going to have to pay to allow them crawl their pages.

Is this linked in any way to the announcement?

Apart from the great discussion I need the bargains forum. Just got a great smart watch x 3 for £27.93 each discounted from £199. Sim racing kits discounted by £100 for Christmas for my son. Help with getting a PS5 on launch day. Remington shavers discounted to £5. 9 litres of minty shower gel for £9, projectors, 4 pairs puma trainers for 48 euro, batteries, dashcams, mobile phones, memory cards, toolkits, samsung jet 85 vacuum with 150 euro cashback and on and on it goes. I can't afford for Boards to disappear. I'll pay a membership.

Might I also suggest you should have a secondary option for a donation. A lot of people who might not necessarily want to subscribe, particularly where they appreciate the anonymity of a user name, might be happy enough to drop some money in via a donation button or even GoFundMe

Maybe a “Help Keep the Lights On” option ?

Saw this on Reddit too! Won't pay a subscription, I've had fun over the years in many different guises and this is my first post probably in years. It was fun. Thanks.
