I booked an airbnb at the weekend. It was for 2 nights but only stayed one as it was unheated and clearly damp. I know it's summer but it gets very cold in the nighttime. There was oil central heating but no oil (I was told this by the owner the next day)

I've contacted Airbnb's dispute resolution and they are investigating and will decide.

Has anyone had their money back from Airbnb? And aren't they supposed to inspect properties before they put them on their books?

    Thanks

Pretty sure they don't inspect properties before they allow them to be listed.

I think you're right- otherwise it wouldn't have a hope of passing!

I got a refund for one night- which was a miserable night and I don't think it's allowed to post a bad review as they vet it first

.it's a business so the more hosts Airbnb have the more money they make..

Was central heating mentioned in the listing ?

Was there any alternative type of heating provided ?

There were radiators in the house but no heating oil - as admitted by the host.

TThe small windows were covered with an insulation type material and it was obvious from the damp smell the house hadn't been heated in some time

Did you check for previous reviews before you rented?

Yes they were positive. I did discover though that airbnb decide whether or not to put your review online. Again it is a money-making business who want as many hosts as possible so they get their percentage

I suggest you actually read how airbnb reviews work instead of believing stupid people who say utter rubbish.

airbnb only take down a review if there is blatant misinformation and even then it is for the host or guest to go through an appeals process before it gets reviewed.

However airbnb will only publish reviews where BOTH host and guest write reviews. So if the host decided you were a troublesome guest who needed extra heat on a mild summer night where 99.9% of houses in the country didn't need it, then my guess is they did not write a review of you so that a near certain poor review by you did not appear.

Airbnb state this VERY clearly when you write your review.

Just to be clear - the house was damp, unheated - smelled of mould and was not fit for purpose by ANY standard.

I'm not sure what got you angry but a reasonable standard is just that 'reasonable'

Remarking on the temperature in a damp, unheated old cottage and implying I am unreasonable is unfair

That's not correct that both host and guest have to write a review in order for a review to be published, I've seen it in my own case. From this:

Reviews are only posted after both parties have submitted their reviews, or once the 14-day period has ended—whichever comes first.

Seems they've changed it and that has to be even better as a negative review will now be published even if a host doesn't give a review. Previously reviews only were published if both parties wrote a review.
