Oh right I thought you meant ethernet was that speed also. Yeah that would be around most you’d get from WiFi 6 5GHz.

That workaround doesn’t work here AFAIK, maybe it does in the UK but it’s mentioned it’s not stable anyway. The only way to get “modem mode” is by asking Virgin customer support to enable IPv4 but people haven’t been successful lately in getting them to do it.

If IPv4 only mode is enabled, port forwarding starts working and “modem mode” appears as CGNAT and DS-Lite are removed.

But as I said the agents don’t seem to be as willing to do it lately for some reason. You might have to say you need it to connect to work but still I don’t think they do it anymore.

But as long as you’re happy with the settings available in “access point mode” on the Orbi then no there wouldn’t be a difference in speed anyway. But port forwarding does not work with CGNAT.

I suspect that VM are running low on IPv4 addresses. They've started charging business customers €10 per month for static /30 addresses now too.

Well…i am failing to achieve near 5Gb speeds,no matter what im doing here.

i stand to be corrected and convinced but i have a feeling the line is not capable of 5Gb,somehow.

Ive changed computer, NICs,cables CAT7 and fiber optics cable and SFP modules.

Best achieved speed is a 2,700Mb dl and 550 up when i linked the PC 10GB card with a CAT7 cable direct in to modem's 10GB LAN port.

Anyone got 5Gb on a standard PC and wired, please share the pain with me…

Just curious. Have you tried a Cat6a cable over the Cat7? I've just heard redditors complaining of trouble with Cat7

Looks like I picked the wrong week to quit sniffing glue

Which UDM are you using? and do you have IPS/IDS turned on? The only UDM capable of 5Gb throughput with this turned on is the UDM Pro Max or the Cloud Gateway Fibre. I have a UDM Pro with it all turned on and I get roughly 2.5Gb through put. I havent tried it with them turned off as they are more important to me than the download speed.

*Edit* The best you will get with it turned on is 3.5Gb but thats with minimal detection turned on I believe.

Got an Eero 7 Max on the way, will update with how it performs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

Are you planning on putting it in “Access Point Mode” or have you got a WAS-110 etc. set up going in front of it?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,220 ✭✭✭digiman

Will put it in AP mode and see what it’s like, there is no SFP slot in the Eero so don’t see how I could use a WAS-110?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah you can get a switch or media converter to put in between.

If you have the spare hardware, run OpenSpeedTest (even in a docker container) or iPerf 3 on another machine to test your local LAN speeds.

    Thanks.

What puzzles me: i have the UDM Pro as the main router and if i run the ISP speed tests from the smart_app,i get 5Gb speeds,as it should be. How do they reach that figure ? If i connect a new PC i7,16Gb RAM, SSD and with an Intel x540-10G card on a CAT7 cable direct in to the modem 10Gb LAN interface, never goes over 2.5Gb.

I'll try to find a CAT6 cable later today.

Called VM tech support and they said he can sees an interference in the house affecting the signal…explained that WiFi is done via separate Unify WAP and the only device connected in the modem is a 10Gb NIC and PC ! Then, he backed and said sorry. My account is enabled for 5Gb an dwe are very happy with the constant 500MB uploads… but is a personal offfence now to get the 5. My friend just sent me a snapshot with 10Gb down and 10Gb up…arghhh

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

i had in plan to buy that extra security solution from them but i hold it until getting 5Gb. With UDM reset or factory defaults, with services on or off,WAN tests are 5Gb,LAN speeds under 2Gb.

There is a huge backlog on orders of the WAS-110 !!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

You can buy them from multiple places. It seems to be just Better Internet’s X-ONU-SFPP that is really backlogged. Fibermall should have them available to order, there’s listings on AliExpress also.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

Which "compatible" version for our VM will you recommend from here, please:

    https://www.fibermall.com/sale-462134-xgspon-onu-sfp-stick-i-temp.htm

    LE

Have it: 8311 firmware and Ubiquity compatibility.

The X540 Intel chip on your refurbished NIC seems to be quite old and doesn’t seem to support 2.5/5Gb modes, only 10Gb.

You can update Intel drivers also but the X540 isn’t officially supported in Windows 11 but there is Windows 10 drivers that might work. I don’t think this will fix the issue anyway, I think you need to find a different NIC.

That seems to be an X-ONU-SFPP and while it should still work without issue, other users here have had success with the WAS-110 from Fibermall.

For some strange reason it switches to a X-ONU-SFPP when you select the 8311 community firmware option so I’m not sure. It might be just better to get the WAS-110 and flash it with 8311 yourself.

If the UniFi app is showing a speed test result of 5Gb, it’s working fine and your issue is internal. They use Blacknight for their speed tests.

Don’t get too hung up over it though. Other than the occasional speed test, 5Gb download is of little real world benefit over 2.5Gb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yes I mentioned this to @Boards_Member before. It’s most likely the NIC in the PC, from what I can see it doesn’t support 2.5/5Gb, only 10Gb.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

I was thinking to look at the card next as even disconnected it gets really really hot…

We have another card,a X520,i will play with that too shortly.

Running on Linux OS ,two distros and seems to be same across all computers.

    Thanks

    LE

Tried the x520,which is seen as an Intel 82599 10Gb chipset.

Under Windows, Driver Intel 2024, connected ADC fibre optical speed at 10GB …

BUT… under flow speed connection at 1Gb or 10Gb !

AND…in my EndeavourOS, i can select the speeds at more granular levels.

However,i have a feeling i am setting up the circuit Layer 1 links, from the NIC to my Unifi aggregation switch and not the speeds to UPC modem/ WAN /Internet !! :(

Playing here with settings,no real difference in terms of speeds and / or links.

I'm modifying only layer1, NIC to switch.

Got 3 Eero Max 7 this week and set them up. Have the main hub connected to the VM router at 10Gbps and then have two more Max 7s daisy chained from those at 10Gbps also. Was pleasantly surprised that I got the Ethernet links up at 10Gbps as have a couple of patch panels connecting some of these. WiFi speeds on the iPhone 16 Pro Max are 1.5Gbps down and 540Mbps up around the house when connected to each hub.

The Eero has its own speed test app and always gets 5.4Gbps down and 540Mbps up. Very happy so far. Not sure wether to invest in a 10Gbps Ethernet adapter for the macbook, they seem expensive enough and probably a cheaper 2.5Gbps is more value for money as I don’t really need the download speeds.

What does it say in Windows under Control Panel > Network & Internet > Network and Sharing Centre > Ethernet > Speed?

Because even if it is only a 1/10Gb NIC, it should still be negotiating with the Hub 5x at 10Gb. It shouldn’t matter that the ISP profile is 5Gb. It would only matter if some part of the setup is limited to 5Gb then that NIC wouldn’t be able to negotiate at 5Gb.

Have you tried updating the drivers yet? The last supported driver seems to be 30.1 - 29/04/2025, even if they are Windows 10. The latest Windows 10 driver, 30.2, has dropped support for them.

    https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/download/18293/intel-network-adapter-driver-for-windows-10.html

As you have said also, these seem to run very hot and some people have said they needed active cooling to avoid overheating.

Just so you know, these are most likely not genuine Intel NICs. They are refurbished Intel chips that are put on new PCBs by random companies. They should still work though. Maybe you would have more luck with something like this though -

All seems fine at Layer1,cabling/fibre optic and routing/switching…except with the common element is the NIC.As you advised… ;)

As i got suspicious of those Intel chipset NICs… i ordered two Broadcom NetXtreme p225p DualPort 10/25 SFP+. The chipset is original BCM57414 and hope to have them delivered this week.

Dropping the UDM as well, replacing it with a standard miniPC with the above dual NIC and Open Source' pfSense firewall.

Anyone managed to get a WAS-110 and working ?

Ordered one today,€170 paid so far…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yes a few people have here, there was a few bits that were different to the UK guide that have been explained earlier in this thread e.g. VLAN ID 10, MAC Address cloning needed from Hub 5x.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

Arghh.forgot i have the phone on the router…i may have to sell it out as cannot afford to lose the phone line !

Is there a work around ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 565 ✭✭✭NotShero

No I don’t think there would be a workaround with the WAS-110, the Hub 5x would be needed for the VOIP service.

With eir there are work arounds because you can use IPoE and PPPoE. I don’t think this is possible with Virgin as it’s only IPoE/DHCP afaik.

You’d have to try and get “modem mode” on the Hub 5x by asking technical support for IPv4 but you wouldn’t need a WAS-110 anyway for this.

Delivered today for the module…but i cannot use it due to phone line orders "shall" remain active.

    any offers accepted,cash only.

Has anyone been able to get 5Gb down (or anywhere close to it) on a single client with the Hub AP mode (standard out of the box setup)?

A friend of mine got it installed today but can't get more than 1.6Gb down before it **** itself and disconnects. He's connected directly to 10Gb port on HUB and to 5Gb to USB 3.2 Adapter on PC. Not expecting full 5Gb from the adapter but even the older 3.0 ones could hit around 3.5Gb. Thanks.

There have been a good few posts of people able to get the full 5Gb/s here.

Does your friend know for sure the port on the PC is USB 3.1 (3.2 Gen 2) and what adapter is it?

A PCIe NIC would be a better option, if ye were comfortable installing it.
