Many girls who were attending the girls' summer camp known as Camp Mystic near the River Guadalupe in Texas are still missing after the flash floods that took place in that state.

Texas Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick told the PM programme on Radio 4 that many of 27 missing girls were "under the age of 12". Pictures from the camp show it in disarray, with blankets, mattresses, teddy bears and other belongings caked in mud. Many were asleep when the river rose more than 26 feet (8 metres) in less than an hour in the early hours of Friday.

A flash flood still wouldn't take place at as great a speed as a tsunami or an avalanche. Therefore, the fact that a flood was taking place must have been obvious as soon as the ground was becoming waterlogged.

So, even with the river rising more than 26 feet in less than hour, how did the victims not have time to move a significant distance away from the river to avoid being swept away?
