Thought it might be no harm to have a spot to discuss Dunne and his ongoing f2 campaign as well as his options and prospects for f1. Instead of the discussion being hidden in the various race threads and stuff.

I was initially thinking he wouldn't have a chance in f1 due to a low profile and so on, but he's really put himself into the picture with the f2 season he's been having. His f1 practice today has been getting good attention from non-irish media too, so it's not like there's a bias at play.

I struggle to find a seat for him in 2026 regardless of how he goes in the f2 championship, but I now definitely think he's in with a shout for 2027. And obviously if another team wants him for 26 there's a chance (eg alpine).

    Let's go Alex!

I think 2027 is probably more in his favour. A reserve role with a few FP outings next year would be amazing for him, I can see the grid changing a lot after next year.

More non Irish coverage from the race...

Just saw this now. He's very well spoken for his age, isn't he? Great to see the increased interest in him from the big broadcaster too, up the Irish.

Following a magnificent drive to 2nd place in the F2 feature race, Dunne has been DSQd for plank wear.

Talk about a weekend ups and downs.

It's only the 2nd disqualification in F2 this year and the 1st from a Feature race…

Might Cadillac be a possibility for 2026, on loan from McLaren?

Gunther Steiner (who has experience of starting a new team) was strongly advocating that a new team joining the grid should avoid rookies - he thought that a Perez/Bottas combo would be ideal, and it's not like Cadillac can't afford it.

I can't see why they'd go for someone like Dunne when they have the money they do, but would love to see him somewhere alright.

If Alex was to make the F1 grid in 2026 I think that 2nd Alpine seat is the only possible option but watching the pressure both Doohan and Colapinto have been under there it might be best avoided unless it turns out Mercedes power unit is the one to have. I expect Cadillac will be targeting experience next season

2027 is Dunne's best bet but he has to keep up this seasons impressive level of performance in both F2 and future F1 practice runs

I dunno why McLaren would let Dunne got to Alpine?

Best thing Dunne is runner up this year then wins it next year. Winning this year would be bad, he'd either be a reserve just doing odd FP1's or shunted to Formula E.

And keeping the best case scenario Irish hat on, lets hope Piastri usurps Norris as team leader and wins the next two WDC, it'd likely cause Lando to move giving Dunne an easy seat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,356 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

That's what I'm hoping for. Piastri wins 2025, wins 2026. Norris leaves. Piastri/Dunne lineup in 2027. That'd be class.

Only reason I could see McLaren let him go to another team early would be on a loan deal, I don't think there are any other junior drivers for McLaren that would be close to getting an f1 seat anytime soon so they really should be keeping their contract options with Dunne open.

Thats not the best case scenario. Feck off. That is the Worst case scenerio. You want some little spoiled child who has only been at Mclaren because A) he betrayed Alpine and B) only there for 2 seasons to win the WDC. No thanks. Lando deserves it and is going to crush Piastri for the rest if the season. The WDC is Landos.

That's what I'm hoping for. Piastri wins 2025, wins 2026. Norris leaves. Piastri/Dunne lineup in 2027. That'd be class.

Thats what I am hoping against. This year Is Landos if He wins this year then fine if the spoiled little brat wins it next year I am OK with that but if the spoiled little brat wins this year no thanks. Lando will win the WDC this year.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Interesting feature from The Race. The hype around Dunne is real now.

Side note - does Dunne have a super licence already?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 221 ✭✭gryfothegreat

Worth noting that the Warren Hughes mentioned in this article is Mark Hughes' brother, who edits Motor Sport and The Race. A nice connection to have!

Right now Dunne has 32 SL points (7 from P2 in GB3, 12 from P1 in British F4, 10 from P2 in Italian F4 and 3 from P5 in F4 UAE). Some sites report 22 but they're not counting Italian F4. So going into 2026, he'd need to finish at least 7th in F2 to get an SL based off results alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,356 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

You can only get points from 2 championships in the same calendar year. And the competitions can't overlap. And it's from the previous 3 seasons. So by my count:

    • 2024:
      • Formula 3 - finished 14th. No super licence points.
    • 2023:
      • GB3 Championship - finished 2nd. 7 super licence points.
    • 2022:
      • British F4 - finished 1st. 12 super licence points.
      • UAE Formula 4 - finished 6th. 2 super licence points. Tied on points with 5th, but behind on countback.

So that puts him on 21 super licence points (or 22 if he gets the points of 5th for the UAE championship). Italian F4 overlaps with British F4 so wouldn't be eligible for points for both.

However, the important thing will be for 2026 season. So that'll cover 2025, 2024 and 2023. 2023 has 7 super licence points. 2024 has 0. 2025 has 1 so far (FP1 session in F1). To get to 40 assuming he doesn't do any more FP1s he'll need 32 more super licence points. So if he finishes in the top 3 of F2 he'll get 40 points. If he finishes 4th he'll get 30 points, so would need 2 more FP1 sessions to get him over the line. If he has a disaster and drops to 5th or below he'd need to go do another series later in the year to top up the points needed (

2 F2 drivers in FP1 today - Arvid Lindblad (Red Bull) and Paul Aron (Sauber). They were down towards the back of pack. Now part of that is the cars they were in, but it does highlight how well Dunne did last week.

Another very poor outcome in the Silverstone sprint, a coming together with Mini, puncture, DNF.

Hopefully he does better in the feature race tomorrow, starts in second place. Lights out at 11.05am.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,356 ✭✭✭✭dulpit

I always forget how much earlier the F2 feature race is before the f1 race. The sprint race is less than 2 hours before f1 quali, but the feature race is nearly 4 hours before.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Dunne got through wet conditions to finish 2nd in the Feature but I think he will be getting the win at some point later today as Crawford definitely pitted when VSC had come out

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,550 ✭✭✭recyclebin

Very harsh on Crawford it he loses the win. Would he have seen on his steering wheel that it was a VSC.

Commentators & Rodin seemed convinced the pitstop was illegal, but no further word it seems!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭Ohmeha

Crawford has kept the win alright, it turns out rulebook wording on 39.9 point b) does allow you to make a pit stop under VSC once you were already in the pit entry

39.9 The mandatory pit stop may not be carried out:

    a) Until the driver has completed six laps, or;

    b) During a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) intervention, unless the driver is already in the pit entry or pit lane at the time the VSC is deployed, or;

    c) At the same time as any pit stop necessary after a penalty under Article 40.3 c) or d) has been imposed.

Any driver who, for any reason, makes a pit stop under a) or b) above will not be considered to have carried out his mandatory pit stop.

I can understand commentators mixing up the rules, but Rodin should have known better.
