Flip-flop Number whatever from Trump suggesting that there'll be a change in his Admins undocumented aliens policy to allow some of them work on farms and in hotels WHILE paying taxes.

I had suggested some time ago that economic pressures would probably force the Trump administration to devise something like this. Not any great prediction, though. It just seemed like the only logical way to square that particular circle.

Surely this has been posted here already?

    https://www.rte.ie/news/business/2025/0703/1521692-us-non-farm-payroll-figures/

American exceptionalism aside President Trump deserves a lot of credit but of course all the positives will be ignored by the usual suspects...

Did you even read the article you posted? Of course all the negatives will be ignored eh?

Despite the bigger-than-expected rise in payrolls, job growth is slowing, mostly reflecting tepid hiring… Indicators, including the number of people filing for state jobless benefits and receiving unemployment checks, have pointed to labour market fatigue after a strong performance that shielded the economy from recession as the US Fed aggressively tightened monetary policy to combat high inflation. Most economists expect the jobless rate will rise through the second half of this year, and potentially encourage the Fed to resume its monetary policy easing cycle in September.

I mean , the farming industry has been calling for an updated and expanded "Seasonal worker visa" program for years.

A very significant number of people traditionally come to the US for short period of time (Planting/Harvest seasons) without any intention of staying full-time and the majority of them are illegal because there isn't really a visa program for them.

A proper system like that would be great - They'd be legal , they'd have rights and protections and they'd come and go as needed.

But that won't be what Trump does here - His will be thoughtless and cruel and place ALL of the power in the hands of the employer and people coming in under these rules will not have the same workers rights as other people, that's if they have any rights at all.

Any reason why you aren't willing to discuss the hits to Medicaid? Or are you just with deaths and debt that it will be responsible for?

Try read the article, not the headline.

Indicators, including the number of people filing for state jobless benefits and receiving unemployment checks, have pointed to labour market fatigue after a strong performance that shielded the economy from recession as the US Fed aggressively tightened monetary policy to combat high inflation.

Most economists expect the jobless rate will rise through the second half of this year, and potentially encourage the Fed to resume its monetary policy easing cycle in September.

    Classic Trump supporter stuff though.

Just over 118,000 B.C. cars entered Washington state at Metro Vancouver crossings in June — down from 206,000 over the same period last year. In the first half of this year there have been 413,000 fewer B.C. drivers crossing into Washington state compared with the same period last year.

The Trump effect. My missus went across (she has a Nexus card) and she said there were no cars crossing at all.

    Terminology.

The Big BS bill is cutting MediCAID, which is limited support for poor people. MediCARE is the system where, when employed, you contribute to the Medicare fund via payroll deductions that end when you retire, which is when you're eligible for MediCARE. MediCARE is not substantially impacted by the bill, some changes apparently in technical things about people that work and claim MediCARE, which can happen if you're old enough and still working.

You have to be 65 or older to sign up for MediCARE, not MediCAID. The GQP are d1cking with the MediCAID eligibility requirements, including (in the big BS bill) the laughably titled "work requirements" which really are 'make it really hard to sign up' requirements.

So, yeah, this bill negatively impacts the poor, usually red state people that likely voted for Trump. FAFO, well, time to FO.

RTE should be pinged for malpractice.

    A simple google shows:

    "

In June 2025, the U.S. labor market showed mixed signals regarding job growth. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), nonfarm payrolls increased by 147,000 jobs, indicating a healthy labor market despite being below some forecasts. However, the private sector, as reported by ADP, experienced a loss of 33,000 jobs, marking the first decrease since March 2023 and significantly missing expectations for a 100,000 increase.

    "

So, the private sector is actually in negative territory. Witless RTE writers missed that bit.

saw an interesting press conference from Florida yesterday with Trump and De Santos where they were giving out about Bidens census that they reckon didn’t give red states enough Republican reps.

Their plan is next year to get more Republican seats for the likes of Florida and Arizona and less for blue states. You can see the fix is already being planned.

So Private sector down 33k jobs , but Non-Farm payroll up overall by 147k - Which essentially means public sector hiring of ~180k.

As others have mentioned - How much of that is simply re-hiring people that DOGE fired in March/April ??

The last US Census was carried out on April 1, 2020, when Trump was president

If I'm understanding CNN correctly, the holdout GOP members from yesterday have fallen in line with the rest of their elected fellows which means they have stuck their collective head up a certain persons lower orifice, with or without using his new scent as a medical relief, and his Finance Bill will be on his desk for signature one day before the deadline he set, 04th July.

Edit: It seems I may have been a bit premature… CNN is reporting now that the speaker has taken his seat so the vote may take place now.

The bill only means gamblers can claim tax credits on 90per cent of loss,s. Versus income earned. In today's wall st journal. Tech experts say. Ai will wipe out half of jobs are office white collar workers the new bill means even if you are legally entitled to medicaid the reporting requirements will be so complex most people will just give up

II had no idea gamblers got receipts when they put 10 dollars into a poker machine or played blackjack in a casino all the films I watch leave this part out

Ireland always seems to follow American trends in business

If you work in an office at a desk for a private company you should be worried

Ai seems to be built into every new os and app and it will be hard to do any work in the future without using Ai

Of course ai never makes mistakes so I'm sure that ,ll work out great

Everything is falling into place now in my head. Paramount pay Trump $16 Million in damages. I was thinking at the time why are Paramount so soft? They could have easily overturned that lawsuit. A monkey could have overturned that lawsuit.

But then I see that Paramount is looking to close an $8 billion merger with Skydance Media that will require final approval from the Trump administration. 😉😉

    The bill passes.

Best of luck to all who need healthcare or food assistance, times are going to get tough.

I really am looking forward to the floods of "I didn't think it was going to impact me, I need my meds" that flow in from red states.

They deserve every single piece of it.

Final vote. GOP 216 Aye. Dems 212 Nay.

Total Aye 216. Total Nay 214. Bill passed by 2 votes.

The 2 GOP Nay holdouts were Massie and Fitzpatrick. I do not know who the two GOP Non voters are or know if they were present or were not able to get back to vote, due to weather problems as the House members had been allowed head home after the last House Vote. If they were absent, I'd imagine that Trump wont be happy with Johnson.

A republican party that was worried about facing elections wouldn't have passed this bill

I would expect there to be Air Marshalls on all the aircraft bringing in new arrivals. It would be so embarrassing if a hijack were to take place from the camp.

Most Americans don't care about their own interests, or at least don't vote for them. 'it's the economy stupid' is one of the most incorrect phrases in US politics. Most voters would happily hoover up culture wars crap, that doesn't directly effect them, rather than vote in their own economic interest. The way America is now it's like the democrats start each election on -5 points. Hard to know where the country goes from here apart from deeper down the rabbit hole

I feel sorry for the people who voted for Harris and who will suffer due to this bill. I hope the people who voted for Trump have long sleepless nights for years to come worrying about their money and healthcare. They get what they deserve.

"I'm a 67 year old mother of two beautiful boys from Arkansas. I've voted for President Trump three times and I was proud to do it. But today I've lost my medicare and no longer have access to the meds I need to treat my chronic migraines. I'm sitting here crying and cursing the day I ever laid eyes on Joe Biden, for I know that this is all his fault, somehow."
