It's a wildly fantastical claim with nothing backing it up. In my experience, those are very rarely true.

I am not going to post PMs between a mod and me publicly. But trust me there was no room for misunderstanding. It could not have been any clearer.

I'm very surprised to read this.

Was it a current CA mod? You're more than welcome to post any PMs from me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

I cannot back it up without posting PMs which I dont think is permissible.

yes current mod and it was also clear that it wasnt just that mod's personal stance but policy.

Can you tell me what this policy is? I seem to have missed the memo.

I think its ok to say it was about Ukraine. That its being made clear that boards supports pro Ukraine positions and anything else is deemed supporting Kremlin narrative and thereby automatically deemed trolling.

I think its only fair to assume that once this happens on one topic it does happen on other topics too no?

it's probably impossible to get absolutely zero bias anywhere if that's what you're looking for.

I don't think boards.ie has zero bias, purely because I have yet to come across any platform, be it a news website, forum, social media group etc that has zero bias.

All humans have their own internal bias, many they're completely unaware of. So it will of course carry into websites, who owns the website, what most of the posters feel about certain topics etc.

As ancapailldorcha said above though, 'Moderation is about preserving a space for discussion. Nothing more.' - which I think the moderators on here, be and large, do a pretty good job at.

Far better than any other platforms I've come across anyway. (I was actually only just perma-banned from a subreddit this morning as my comments didn't follow the party line!)

OK, if what you say is true, have you reported the PM in question so that someone higher up can take a look and see if their is an issue with this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 6,467 ✭✭✭CalamariFritti

I havent and I really dont intend to take this further. This has not been very recent too, few months back. Also my CA history is pretty chequered to be fair and the mod is alright and has been polite.

And whats the point anyway? Sometimes your own positions are mainstream and sometimes they arent.

Is all good. Just saying we mustn't always assume there is no bias, sometimes there just is.

Then I have to do the sceptical thing and dismiss this. I've never ever in my 11+ years of modding heard of any such policy.

If the mod in question was me, you have my permission to share the PM here.

Not so sure about that. On the 'Hamas Strile on Israel' thread some posters seemed to receive a lot of leeway while others didn't especially when attacking the poster and not the post.. Just saying.

I have deleted all the off topic back and forth about the Ian bailey thread. Don't bring it up again in this thread.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 ferpederine

What exactly is wrong with this comment?

It's not anecdotal. As the poster says, there is plenty of evidence of this on LinkedIn. Photos and the like. No anecdotes. On a discussion site. Has anyone who came up with or support this rule actually spoken with another person not from the internet? I have, and I would tell you about it, but apparently that's not allowed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,349 ✭✭✭eightieschewbaccy

And I'd suspect this is somewhat of a misrepresentation of what the mod said. Particularly since the Ukraine thread frequently has posters posting propaganda on the topic.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,477 ✭✭✭Rocket_GD

I used to be with Miss Ireland.

Does that make it true or is it anecdotal?

    Hmmm!
Not that we want to go down this off topic rabbit hole but what other position is there besides Pro-Ukraine?
    They are the victims here.

Ye I think that mindset may be behind the problem here. Not that we want to go down that rabbit hole.

IMO migration threads need heavy moderation. It just not a subject that lends itself to hands-off moderation. It's been tried here before on Boards and ended in disaster. The middle ground gets swamped by the extremists on both sides. Best to keep the thread open under conditions, then allow it get closed because it turned to ****.

100% agree with this sort of moderation ….. I can see the logic …..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

That is precisely what I am talking about ….. I made the comment about the fact that domestic Irish criminals and their anti social behaviour are a major problem ….. and are the problem on public transport and migrants are not ….. there are plenty newspaper articles, TV programmes, et al on the topic as well as plenty people who drive buses, use buses, use trains, are employees of Irish Rail et al who know exactly what I talk about ….. another example was the anti social carry on during Covid level 2-3 restrictions where outdoor diners endured anti social behaviour from drunks/addicts …… plus the fact that a lot of people at anti migrant protests are very much from a criminal background …. and resort to violence ….. the riots of November 2023 are proof of that ……. none of this is anecdotal ….. it is FACT ……

100% agree with closing down discussions on undetermined legal events eg Ian Bailey or ongoing court cases …… I do not think commenting on who is guilty or not in such open cases is even legal ?? …. I also agree that moderation of forums in general is certainly needed but it needs to be done correctly …..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,135 ✭✭✭lumphammer2

They do when extreme posts come in ….. we all know it is a divisive topic but what I posted was anything but extreme ….. just made the comment that most crime in Ireland is done by domestic Irish criminals …… and talked about the situation on the public transport where anti social activities go on …… now Prime Time and other programmes have discussed this at length ….. it makes the news on RTE, Virgin, national newspapers, Dublin newspapers, regional papers, radio, et al all the time …… there is nothing extreme in this and nothing anecdotal in this ……

The "moderator" accused me of using 'anecdotes' and another poster said I was 'anti-Irish' and twisted what I said …. and refused to listen …. the poster who said I was 'anti Irish' and looked for an argument should be blocked certainly ….. and that person did not read what I said …… I said I was against criminals of domestic Irish descent ….. not against Irish people and I am an Irish person myself …… I am unsure if the person who twisted what I said was dealt with by the moderator but most certainly should be ……

It is perfectly fine to close down people who are there with a far right or other such agenda that can lead to violence ….. it is also perfectly fine to close down people who are insulting and disrespectful to other posters ……

This sort of heavy handed "moderation" I talk about is what is killing Boards.ie and other such sites ….. a lot of people leave because they feel that they are being targeted by overzealous "moderators" who make up rules to suit themselves and make life easier for themselves …… if a moderator cannot do their job correctly or have not got the time or the commitment for it then they should pass it onto someone who can do it …… the moderation of the threads mentioned by me and by another poster here are found wanting and need reform …… anyone can use the 'anecdote' rule to close down a discussion if they want …… discussions should only be closed down if they are extreme, encourage violence or have a bullying/nasty nature about them where posters are being called terms like 'stupid' or where bad language is used ……

No anecdotes basically means you can state your opinion, you just aren't allowed to explain why you hold it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,162 ✭✭✭kabakuyu

Why is this row still going on,the OP used anecdotes, there are very clear rules that anecdotes are not allowed. The Mods have stated that the rule on anecdotes is not going to change. That should be the end of it.Calling for a change of Mods is unbelievable.

The OP made some dubious anecdotal comments on Irish people in the thread,I pulled him on it and made my feelings known, that is all that happened. We now have the OP calling for me to be sanctioned but is myopic to their own failings with regards to the rules and other matters. You couldn't make it up.

    EEdit.

I also see that the OP is now using this thread to keep attacking me,unbelievable.

I think the part about my school visits is considered an anecdote. I took my medicine, I don’t really have issue with it.

It’s a small price to pay, so I don’t have to read stories about Nigerians pissing on swans.
