No president can usurp the US constitution.

Not by themselves. They need an organisation behind them.

The fact is that public consensus has been coming apart for a long time in the US. Social media, underpinned by chronic cultural problems has polarised American society, inducing widespread radicalisation. The difference between the right and left on this is that the left are still fractured while the right has largely united and they've united under Trump. Their guiding principle is not the US constitution. It is the word of Trump speaking to their prejudices and fears. This is the essence of a particularly scary term you may have heard in the last year - 'post-constitutional America'.

Donald Trump must be the first time in history that a weak, lazy man totally uninterested in his job who basically spends 99% of his time asleep or playing golf is idolised by millions of uninformed zombies …… Trump has no input whatsoever on government and has delegated that to incompetent extremists who answer to either Project 2025 itself an incompetent project or Netanyahu ….. Trump is a paper tiger and a con ….. a liar and a marketeer snake oil salesman who comes out every now and again to spout the propaganda of what is behind him ….. he speaks for an entity that is akin to The Handmaid's Tale …. but he is the Basil Fawlty spoof version ….. he speaks to the press ….. abuses Kaitlan Collins or whoever is in the firing line ….. and then rides off into the sunset as all cowboys do ….. in this case to play golf and say he beat Tiger Woods or whoever …… another lie ….. while he allows a group of incompetent unelected hardline ministers run America as some sort of a cross between Gilead and Fawlty Towers with Maxwell Not-So-Smart in charge of security, trade and economics …..

Hitler famously used to sleep until after midday after nights of staying up till 3am ranting to his guests. No one ever disturbed him, not even for D-Day and it resulted in no tanks being sent to the coast to push back the allies.

Trump will slob around and sleep most of the day but once he gets his BIG Mac and settles in for a night of Faux news tjen he comes to life, jabbering to the world on social media.

Narcissists tend to be lazy and incompetent but loving telling others how everything should be done and no one does it better than them.

Doesn't say alot of the human race that we flock to them like moths to a bulb.

Tariffs and annexation yields (imo) essentially no US wine sales to Canada last month. Down 94% YOY which imo means nothing sold.

Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but the heading in the above chart should read "US Exports of Wine to Canada", or alternatively "Canadian Imports of Wine from the US".

No argument about the substance of the chart, though.

Yeah, I have a Canadian friend who lives in New Brunswick, in a fairly rural area. She told me that since Trump said Canada should become a US state, that they have just stopped buying ANYTHING that comes from the US.

Food, drink, cars, publications , services, anything, anything made in the US , they just won’t buy. She told me that people have just taken this decision by themselves , with no input from government, lobby groups, influencers, or media. It’s a national “movement “ that just happened naturally. They also won’t travel there either, unless it’s completely unavoidable.

All due to Canada placing a 25% tariff on US wine. Wine imports from Australia and New Zealand into Canada have increased to fill in the gap.

It appears there's no tariff on vinegar so at least the US Wineries can convert their expensive wine to cheap vinegar in order to shift it in Canada!

That's why you target industries in a trade war, hit the US in certain markets, the same markets you can look elsewhere to supply (Australia and NZ).

    Groundhog Day-again and again

Trump says there’s a TikTok buyer that he’ll reveal in ‘about two weeks’

Is that the farthest Taco man can think ahead?

The dream would be Canada getting temporary membership of the Schengen until things get sorted out with the US.

Hitler actually overruled his appointed general of the forces near the coast (Rommel) to hold back the tanks as Hitler was 100% certain the real attack would come around Calais

Hitler thought he knew better than those whose professional life was fighting.

We're not in Schengen so I don't see any connection.

If you read the article, there's plenty about it being due to Canadian's just not buying anything from the US, and the provinicial premiers kicking US products off the shelves. Not just tariffs, Canadians are seriously giving 2 fingers to the US. Lots of stories about MAGAts being hostile to their (usually long term) retired Canadian snowbird neighbours in warm states and the Canadians saying, "O.K. then f**k you we're leaving."

Good for Canada. America needs to feel more pain. Maybe enough will come to their senses to do something about the mayhem CFTrump and his lickspittles are causing. I'm doubtful, one thing about Americans is a massive sense of entitlement coupled with rampant deep stupidity.

I was aware they pulled US liquor from the shelves in Canada. I wasn't aware they done the same for wine.

It just goes to show, even if tariffs went back to zero, the damage is done and as you say, Canadians will still avoid some US products.

Soya farmers found that out during Trump's first term. They lost the China soya market for a time due to tariffs and when it reopened, they found most Chinese buyers had switched to Brazilian suppliers and didn't switch back:

Canadian wines are enjoying this, they suffered a few bad years so this really helps with getting the money flowing.

Boarder crossings are still as low as Covid, so it’s really not great for the yanks.

No, D-day, he was a notorious late riser due to long nights waffling and being off his face on various drugs. The allied landings weren't expected where they occurred due to a fairly successful disinformation campaign including an entirely mock flotilla constructed by the allies further up the coast. His minions didn't dare wake him, eventually Rommel made the call to advance the tanks to try to push back the invasion but when Hitler woke and learned of Rommel's action he reversed it. Its widely thought to be one of his worst decisions of the war, besides continuing to fight the Russians in winter.

Imagine if America had a president like Trump during World War 2!

A lad I work with said that the Canucks were turning US made products on the shelves upside down so others would know to boycott them.

The most Canadian protest ever. 😁

And more Chinese buyers will make similar decisions now , further gutting the Midwest who voted for Trump in droves…

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,959 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

I saw an interesting YouTube video today showing Latinos in Florida who voted as a majority for Trump. They now regret this as they see people they know and family being deported. They thought it would only affect other people even though Trump had given plenty of notice of his plans.

Hard to feel sympathy for them, same as Vets who lost their benefits thanks to Musk even though it was flagged in advance. Wait until Medicaid is hit and all the Trump voters affected complain.

If they had the internet and social media back then the world could very much have an America like there is today.

‘heard this morning on radio of an ‘illegal’ taken ‘ into custody’ by ICE for. ‘ forwarding’ to eg South Sudan. He has , apparently 3 - THREE- sons in the marines. So if the three of them were born in the US and they have US passports can they also be shipped out on the basis of their father’s illegality?

Trump , himself, born in The US, is a 10% ‘ blow in’ if you go back far enough in his linage.
so , on what grounds does he plan to deny a passport/American citizenship to certain people born in the US?

watching Karolines press conference now, why does she shout so much? All the journalists asking questions look set up, some lad wants the head of the Fed fired

As Trumps greatest bill ever been defeated at the first stage-

Will Trump need medi- care if this is so-?-

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,376 ✭✭✭blackcard

I don't think there has ever been an administation which has been so openly hostile and intimidatory to the media. Trump himself calling for journalists to be fired and calling them fake news, Vance admonishing them and Hegseth attacking a Fox News reporter for asking a legitimate question about uranium. Karoline is especially vile towards the media saying that they insult her intelligence, she is openly contemptuous of some of them and seeks their removal. Any difficult question is countered by blaming Biden. Her shouty, agressive attitude is symbolic of this regime

We kind of know what it might have been like I suppose (leaving aside the issues of Trump's irrationality/stupidity/erratic behaviour etc. and just considering ideology + politics).

There was the "America First" isolationist movement of the time (Lindbergh as their candidate for President edit: wrong on that one! mixing up fact & fiction [Plot against America] acc. to google!), and the German-American bund I think promoted fascism at home and a US alliance with Hitler's Germany!
