Favourite Sitcom Character

Lots of sitcoms and characters but if I had to pick my favourite I think it would have to be Fr Ted. Just such a hapless character the scene with the car and the hammer epitomises everything about him.

Hal & Lois complement each other brilliantly in Malcolm in the Middle her dancing lessons scene was great likewise Reese going feral.

Some characters like those in Friends & The Big Bang Theory can be quite annoying but other secondary characters in sitcoms go slightly under the radar like Roz in Frasier and the Grandad in Only Fools.

Al Bundy is my favourite. A middle aged embittered crank with a dead end job in a shoe store, constantly insulting his customers and reminiscing about his high school football glory days. I know one or two people like that in real life.

There’s a few similarities between Ted,Del boy and Al but whereas the other two move on to the next drama that world weariness is a constant in Al’s world. It takes some time to unsee Al in Modern Family, Phil followed by Claire are the standouts for me.

    Frank Costanza in Seinfeld.

Played by Jerry Stiller, Ben Stiller's father.

He was also great as Arthur Spooner in King of Queens, similar character just less psychotic.

I forgot about Basil, Fr Ted had the same levels of chaos and you miss some bits on the first viewing. Great writing so many stand out moments the major and the moose head, the hanging gardens of Babylon, ‘I think we’re out of Waldorfs.’

    Phil Dunphy.

But really just Modern Family in general, a safe show that guarantees laughs. But can sometimes be a real kick in the bollóx when it unexpectedly gets serious.

Just 85% of the characters. A few duds alright but most of them are fantastic. And can pair off with practically any combination of them and still lead to utter gold. Casting was elite and most of the cast still meet up regularly.

I dunno how big the overlap between The Walking Dead and Modern Family is but the fact Ty Burrell (Phil) was almost cast as Negan is jus brain breaking.

Manuel in Fawlty Towers is brilliant. Watching it with my kids a while ago and they thought he was so funny.

Holds up well considering how old it is.

Yes I think he’s one of those characters who are understated in the earlier episodes but grow into the show and become fan favourites. I read earlier that the actor who delivered Martin Cranes chair to the apartment was also the guy who took it away so many episodes later.

I think Father Ted Crilly is a truly underrated character. At it's peak Dougal and Jack got all the plaudits as stand out characters but the more and more I look at FT, Ted is such a fantastic character. A bit like Basil Fawlty, Ted is such a complex character. There is a darkness to him that makes thing so much funnier.

The Only Fools and Horses cast. What I liked about them is they could also be the villains, the earlier stuff where they were dodgy characters is what made them.

So hard to narrow it down to just one or even two, and I haven't even watched many of the shows referenced here already.

Father Ted probably if I was forced to choose. Incredible writing, and incredible timing in the performance.

Compo from LOTSW is a beloved character for me, even if the show ran way longer than it should have.

Sergeant Wilson from Dad's Army - understated compared to a lot of the others, but very funny.

    Diane from Cheers was brilliant.

More recent, but I think Granda Joe from Derry Girls steals the show, and I enjoy him more with every rewatch.
