Im a Louth man. I dont think Micko & Gavin combined could win us an all Ireland.

But if Brennan makes the move, would I take Jim Gavin? Of course I would.

Jim McGuinness is a very good manager, 2012 when he developed the transition from defence to attack to the Donegal game was excellent. The 2014 ambush on Dublin too.

But his team was hammered by Mayo in 2013. He was outfoxed by Eamonn Fitzmaurice in the 2014 final. No one talks about Fitzmaurice in the same terms. He managed an ageing Kerry to an All Ireland.

Last year Donegal were beaten by Galway in a tight semi, no shame in that but it's still a championship loss. There are dozens of managers with one All Ireland. Mickey Harte has 3 and he's rarely mentioned. McGuinness just built on the Tyrone 2003 template in 2011.

McGuinness has always had talent at his disposal. If he wins another All Ireland he can enter the Boylan, O'Dwyer, Harte, Pete McGrath, Cody, Liam Sheedy, Gavin, Kiely, Loughnane, Cyril Farrell, Billy Morgan etc conversation.

Donegal were beaten in the semifinal last year, yes. Now, have a look at where they were in 2023. He's a transformative genius.

If "his team lost a football match" is the stick to beat him with well...

They were very poor in 2023 so they were bound to improve. Look at the 'bounce' effect in any sport.

I rarely saw any All Ireland winning team lose by 5 goals the following year, 2013. He lost his motivational powers!

He's a great manager but can be picked apart like any other.

Just because you have a song written about you and a bit of a cult going doesn't make you better than others. Brian Cody teams did it year in year out, even mediocre teams winning All Irelands in 2014-2015.

Jimmy's great but not in the highest notch yet.

... Be sure to tell us when he's there won't you. Just in case we miss it like....

🤣 Donegal have only ever won 2 All Ireland's and 12 Ulster titles. We're not talking about Kilkenny or Kerry here. Out of Donegal's total, 5/12 Ulsters and 1/2 All Irelands were won under McGuiness. Look at where they were in 2010, look where they were in 2023. It's much easier to do it with a county who regularly win anyway, he's up alongside Harte with doing it with a non traditional county. One of the greats.

It's fairly obvious, he's one All Ireland.

Even this year he didn't top the group which put Donegal in a perilous position, playing week in week out. Lucky Donegal met Monaghan. That effort could still show in the semi final.

You think he's in the Kiely, Cody etc league😅

🤣So he's great by Donegal standards.

McEniff broke the duck for Donegal. Worked with the 1982 and 1987 U21s. McGuinness had the U21 2010 finalists and talent also.

Ulster titles are hard won, but they're not All Irelands. Harte kept his team competitive for a decade and won 3. 3 to 1, no argument.

    Who is highest notch?

    Jim Gavin

    Micko

I think Paidi winning a couple of All Irelands after Kerry going a decade without a win and then winning Leinster with Westmeath puts him up there.

    Mickey Harte

    Heffernan

Unfair to leave Jack O out with 4 I suppose!

    Boylan

Possibly to be considered you’d have to win multiple AIs?

IMO Dessie inherited a great side and I find it hard to put him ‘highest notch’ which may be unfair then.

Then you’ve the likes of Kernan and McGuinness bringing success to counties with less success in the past which is a huge achievement in itself.

I said etc. All those you mention included.

Would I put McGuinness in the top 7 gaa managers of all time. Absolutely not. Would I call him a genius, no, tactically astute😜

McGuiness was the manager of the u21 team in 2010. 🤣 Only the 3rd u21 Final Donegal ever got to. McGuiness and Harte are in the same category, so is McEniff. They are some of the greats. Like I said, achieving what they achieved with non traditional counties is what makes them great.

I know he was, there was talent there is my point🤣

Michael Murphy is great. His greatness far exceeds McGuinness',at the moment.

Jim lost to Cork this year, putting Donegal in bother. An awful whinger too. In 2013 it was his players weren't getting protection. I can't imagine Paidi O'Sé playing sissy like that. Or countless others. You look after yourself on the pitch.

Jimmy still has time. I'm over and out I outlined my reasons.

Jim Gavin is the only one can literally say he changed the game 😁

Name a manager who never lost a match? 🤣 The facts put him as one of the greats, your opinion doesn't count for anything against that.

I outlined several since 2011. Some very bad. You're opinions are equally as valid as mine.

One manager wins two All Irelands and is average.

One manager wins one All Ireland and is one of the greats.

We are through the looking glass here now lads.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,931 ✭✭✭Musicrules

Several managers who never lost a game? 🤣 I provided facts. Donegal are a non traditional county. They've won 5/12 of their Ulsters and 1/2 of their All Ireland's under McGuiness. He's brought them from nowhere to All Ireland challengers on two separate occasions. The only fact you brought is that he lost a few matches, just like every single other manager. 😆 The facts say he's one of the greats.

On the viewing on the first 10 minutes here neither of these will be causing any difficulty for the other teams from here on

Meath should be around 6up. They're jittery in Croke Park.
