Extra time and penalties in both games and the poor schedulers will be tearing their hair out.

    The panels have been published.

    https://www.rte.ie/sport/football/2025/0627/1520577-paul-geaney-and-paudie-clifford-named-on-kerry-bench/

And the referees named. Possibly there will be no need for a draw, but it is too complicated for me. The Examiner headline should really say "will be avoided", where possible.

I know people were giving out about but surely it makes Gaelic the first headline in the sports section on Monday? Keeps it in the spotlight

At the same time if the CB wanted to move on because they felt the team.under preformed then it's immaterial whether it's now or three weeks time. Were tgey hinting to Kevin to resign on health grounds and tge hint was not taken.

While the level of player available to Kevin compared to previous managements was not the same there has been serious mistakes made on the sideline I wr thevlast few years.

Was it last year or the year beforehand that you had the failure to realise that a draw woukd finish them.second instead of third in the group and AOS took.and misshit a free that send them.on an away trip for a preliminary QF.

This year earlier in the league the misunderstanding of the new rules lost them.a natch or two. Then you had the loss in the Cavan game. I know Kevin was not onntge sideline for the last RR game this year but the failure to slow down the game after scoring the point to draw it and conceding score that knocked tgem.out was careless as well.

Watch what happens to Jack O'connor when/if he loses against Armagh. The knives are already sharpened in Kerry. Evening he wins the AI the general feeling is he should ho

It's their call, I have no problem with that end of it, as I say I'm no big admirer of Kevin as a manager. The issue here is how it was done - apparently a phone call to Kevin followed within minutes by the press briefing.

    Pretty classy....

If I had a euro for every time I heard that.

Even when Mayo won in 50/51, the county board was a disaster around the time.

1954 Paidraig Carney fiasco a good example, brought him home for a league final (think the prize was a trip to new york). Refused to bring him home to face Galway in the championship.

Last Mayo men to win all irelands played for louth after mayo cb refused to honour their travelling expenses.

Every year they seem to find a new way to undermine or embarass mayo football.

Re quarter finals, Armagh should win by a few points, but the rest could be tight or go to extra time. Dublin, Donegal and Meath to win.

Much as I hate the idea. I would go Tyrone, Armagh, Meath, Donegal. Very Ulster Centric.

Think Meath will have too much physical power for Galway. Especially if no Walsh. Tyrone will have too many options to stop. Any if Dublin have no Con will be even more limited. Kerry backs I would question which is why I would go Armagh.

I think the most interesting one is Meath v Galway. Meath if they start well and use their physical power, loads of two point options unlike Galway.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

You may be correct in your predictions but Galway don't lack physical power, around the middle anyway; pace would be a bigger issue. Conroy, Cooke, Walsh, Finnerty, Thompson have all kicked 2-pointers for Galway in this championship.

I think Tyrone will knock out Dublin and are dark horses overall. They'll have a keeper in his peak ready-built for the new rules and a superior midfield to Dublin (even if POCB has improved). Better overall structure, and if Con isn't 100% ready to go, just don't see where the consistent threat is going to come from.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised by Tyrone-Donegal final.

Have Dublin done anything to suggest they can beat Tyrone.

Didn't win Leinster or their group. Didn't do great against a poor Cork side either. Also don't seem to be coping as well with the new rules as others and have a bang average manager.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,367 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

They certainly don't lack power. Cook has been brilliant for them when he's been on the pitch this year so far. All the talk is about Conroy, but Cook and Maher are the ones that have shown up when required - Maher in particular. That Down game was an example of the game starting to go away from them on the second half when he crashed in to a few people and broke up a few moves, won a few turnovers and changed the direction of the game. No glamor to him, but he's very effective. They'll beat Meath, might not go any further than that but Meath are limited enough.

In other games, Donegal, probably Tyrone and possibly Kerry will have a dead cat's bounce and surprise Armagh.

I don't get the hype around tyrone. They were dreadful against mayo and are missing probably their best all round player in mckernan. Few players I don't think are up to the level. Dublin by 4 for me.

Donegal will have to much for monaghan, but it could be a belter.

Galway meath could be the game of the weekend. Both have great forwards and long kickers. The galway midfield and half forwards are the best in the country. Meath are on the rise but I'll go with the class of Walsh finnerty and Thompson to be decisive.

Hard to know what kerry will turn up. Diarmuid ó Connor is a big loss. But I expect kerry to come out firing. On all the evidence they'll need huge games from their key men as armagh have such depth.. Armagh by 3.

Not at all. If you want an idea how the QF between Tyrone and Dublin will likely go look up the league match between the two where Dublin were very passive. Tyrone won handy.

So far in the championship Meath out muscled Dublin completely. Destroyed Dublin on two pointers. Armagh won pulling up v the Dubs.

Derry nearly beat Dublin because of two pointers. Even though Derry started poorly. Cork should have beaten Dublin and were unlucky not to do so. Dublin gave Cork loads of space it was mad.

Dublin fell over the line against Galway in Salthill. Even though Galway gave Dublin loads of space, and for some mad reason left Kilkenny free. Plus Galway oddly given Dublin’s issues lost midfield.

Basically I would be shocked if the Dubs put up a decent performance v Tyrone. Nevermind talk of beating them!

Edit - on the “bang average manager” bit on Farrell. I would have agreed with you until the Sam win in 23. I never count the Covid Sam.

But in 23 in fairness to Dessie he showed tactical nous. And got the last ounce out of the squad. Resting big guns v Mayo QF that year in 23 and springing them from bench. He never benched Kilkenny before that. Shocked everyone, went for pace starters instead. Also controlled the AI final v Kerry.

I think it should be a great match. Maybe even a better one than Kerry v Armagh. Those are definitely the two matches to watch as neutrals on the Sunday.

    Sunday has almost sold out.

    Hill tickets gone even.

    Good analysis.

I think Kerry will be up for it but will run out of steam. Armagh just have fewer injuries and better bench.

    Donegal by 3.

    Dublin by 7.

    Galway by 5.

    Armagh by 4.

It's crazy to think the day not involving the dubs the hill is sold out. Stand and hill tickets for that matter. And Kerry won't be bringing a big crowd. How times have changed. Dublin's fan base has been dwindling for years now.

Still 2 days left till Sunday, not sure what the Nally holds but it could be very close to a sellout.

    Lots of Kerry people going.

It's pretty much a sell out I think.

    I guess the Nally's just a few 1000.

Only maybe Armagh,Donegal can match Galway in physical power. A lot of the Meath players are young and still need filling out yet. On two pointers in this championship Meath have scored 28 and Galway have scored 19 so yeah better however a few pundits seem to think Croke Park isn't a venue for two pointers like provincial grounds that are more exposed to the wind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 621 ✭✭✭Avon8

Galway kicked double the amount of two pointers in D1 of the league that the second most county kicked. After Clifford I wouldn't pick any player more able than either Walsh or Conroy in that aspect of the game. Cooke not far behind. Walsh was injured for half the championship so far which has hurt the free taking element of it

It's the openness in Galway's defence that's been the problem so far, along with an uncertainty in goal

Is Gleeson back for Galway? That Keeper that played v Down seemed very unsure of himself.
