These are speeds from Virgin 5Gb today.

Download on Virgin 1Gb was generally giving me 300/400Mbps download speeds.

So the noticeable difference is that huge upload speed.

What's your network configuration? Are you testing on a 1gbit-limited device?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26 monkeyblues

should you not be hitting 5gb on those speed tests?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

only with a 10Gb or 5Gb equipment, starts from PC,network card, wire, switch AND connected to the 10Gbe UPC modem port.

    iPhone 16 Pro Max

    MacBook Air M1

    It's a wi-fi 6 router

I believe they should be capable of higher speeds than above

You’d get the 5Gb over wired Ethernet but as far as WiFi, you’re not going to get much higher than that with WiFi 6. You’d need a WiFi 6E/7 6GHz access point to go higher.

This is fairly consistent for me. My UDMP has all the IPS/IDS active so it slows down a good bit in actual use. But that nothing to do with the VM connection.

Not really, you’re just about hitting the limit on WiFi with that setup.

A little more research has suggested

    I buy this BE3600 Wi-fi 7 router, I'll see up to 3.6Gbps over wi-fi

The iPhone 16 Pro Max may then show the max of it's capability of 1.6Gbps

    https://www.tp-link.com/uk/home-networking/wifi-router/archer-be3600/

With some more research it appears

    • VM Hub 5X does not support modem mode
    • Workarounds have only worked when using one of the non 1Gbps ports not the 10Gbps

Going to 192.168.0.1/?page=modemmode works in UK non supported but haven't seen it here

But do you think that is going to stop me from trying??????

    Probably.

That only has a 2.5gb WAN port, so it'll still bottleneck everything at that point. If you get 3.6gbps it'll only be from traffic internal to your network.

Yes those workarounds don’t work properly. The solutions have been mentioned before in this thread, e.g. replacing Hub altogether with a WAS-110.

You don’t specifically need to replace the Hub either, you can just place that TP-Link router in “Access Point Mode” or just buy an access point. You just connect it to the 10Gb port on the Hub.

Those speeds listed on routers are only theoretical, you wouldn’t actually get that. But yes WiFi 7 with the 6GHz band you will get closer to the 1.6Gb of the iPhone.

Also that router only has a 2.5Gb WAN port.

You could go to some expense here. Consider if it's worth it, especially if you are consuming data over WiFi to a phone and laptop.

Has anyone got a good 10Gbps Thunderbolt adapter for a macbook that they would recommend? Ideally I want a small easily portable dock that has more usb-c ports and a 10Gbps Ethernet port that I can plug into the VM router.

Could also do with a cheap 1/10Gbps switch that I can connect to VM router for distribute to ports around the house

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭NotShero

Actually that router doesn’t have a 6GHz band at all, so you wont be able to get 1.6Gb/s over WiFi with that router.

Can you or anyone else recommend any good 5gb/10gb equipment?

I was looking at something like the GigaPlus 10GB Smart Switch (too new to post the link to it), but I have no experience with the product or brand.

In my own home I have Cat6 cabling throughout which runs back to a patch panel connected to a Netgear unmanaged POE switch.

I cant speak for that brand as I use Ubiquiti stuff. But most of them will be fine. You will need 10Gbe NIC's in the pc/s that you want to get full speed on.

Also how many 10Gbe devices do you intend on having? You can get a switch with 2x10Gbe ports for an awful lot cheaper. I think that same company has a 2x10Gbe and 4x2.5Gbe switch for 120 (Also 10% off atm)

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/Unmanaged-Ethernet-RJ45-Switching-Capacity/dp/B0DS56HCX1?s=electronics

again i have no experience with these but the reviews are good.

That switch seems to only have 10Gb uplink ports, you can’t use them to connect to a device AFAIK. The reviews are for all the products listed, so they are mostly about the 4x2.5Gb & 2xSFP model.

Is this the one you were looking at? Yes this should work, I don’t have any experience with the brand but I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t as long as you don’t still need PoE?

If you do still need PoE then maybe something like this -

I have upgraded whole LAN side to fibre optics 10GB.

    Can't get near the advertised 5Gb speeds…

The Unifi UDM does speeds test on the WAN port and says download 5Gb and upload 500Mb but somehow refuses to pass that down to LAN ports.

Plugged the computer 10GbE port via CAT6 cable direct in to modem 10GB port and …surprise !

Testing with servers from OVH,some of them reaches speeds over 1Gb and stays constant reliable nicely but with only 1Gb. Changing servers around, with 10Gb availability, getting near to 2Gb but never near 5Gb. So,i guess there is a throttling going on at the end server NIC too ! Pointless to get 5Gb here if the serving server gives you up to 1Gb speeds restriction ! Good thing is that the upload 500Mb stayed "500" along all the tests.

So,for me here,i feel the older computer PCI slots / cards may need an upgrade too…

People on 5Gb on eir have been able to get 5Gb through the eir server on Speedtest.net

Give it a try here or just select eir on Speedtest.net

What port have you got the lan connected to on the udm?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭Boards_Member

    PC with a 10GbE x520 NIC

Fibre optic AOC 10Gb PC to Aggregation Switch

    Aggregation switch AOC to UDM

UDM, LAN side , port 9 (WAN2) with AOC

UDM on port WAN1 SFP with a 10Gb SF Ethernet direct to VM 10GbE port with a 3m CAT6 cable

    (cant' add photos yet,i guess)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭NotShero

But if you are getting the same with your PC connected directly to the Virgin Media router and you said it was reporting as 5Gb through the Unifi interface, it must be the NIC in your PC. Are you sure the NIC is 10Gb? Device Manager > Network Adapters. Have you tried the eir speedtest?

Also you would have double NAT with that setup as I presume you don't have "modem mode" on the Virgin Hub 5x, this would cause issues with port forwarding but is okay as long as you don't notice any issues yourself. There is the option of removing the Hub 5x altogether with a WAS-110, the process is mentioned earlier on in this thread.

    Thanks !

All networking at Layer2 has 10Gb,checked all settings and dashboards and reports.Tried with fibre to fibre, ethernet CAT6 with and without adapters, bypass the aggSwitch, bypass the UDM. Tried NICs with SFP ports,NICs with 10Gb Ethernet port, single and double. All SFP adapters are Unifi branded and, hot and fast !

I have a feeling could be the UDM or the PCI card/slots but only common element is… the PC.

I'm building a different hardware/software on weekend and try it then.

Got the 5Gbps package via switcher.ie this week. I’ve a Netgear Orbi WiFi mesh that was setup in router mode with eir ftth and was directly connected to the ONT. It has a 2.5Gbps wan port so I’m obviously limited to that speed now with VM. I’ve changed the Orbi now to be setup in access point mode connected to the VM 10Gbps interface as this seems to be the best option for me with my current equipment which I don’t intend to change.

I think this gives me the best setup and fastest speeds, I’ve 2 satellites as well around the house and getting decent speeds at around 700Mbps download and 500Mbps upload.

Any thoughts if worth changing configuration, I don’t see any benefits to setting it up in router mode and trying to change the VM modem to bridge mode?

Speedtest below is directly from the Orbi router

As mentioned in the thread, there is no “modem/bridge mode” on the Virgin Hub 5x and it needs to be replaced with a WAS-110 etc. if you want that set-up, as you are going through Virgin FTTP.

The Orbi mesh you have likely doesn’t have a dedicated backhaul band for nodes so it’s going to be at best half the speed. I can double check if you give me the model number.

You’d need to hardwire the nodes/satellites to get max speed or get a mesh with a dedicated backhaul band for communication between nodes and main router for increased speeds but this still wouldn’t be as fast as hardwiring.

I’ve got the satellites connected with cat6 so they are running at their max, no issues there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 564 ✭✭✭NotShero

Ah okay, that’s not the issue then. That is strange, they should be getting the exact same speed as the main router as long as the 5GHz isn’t too congested around you. Maybe a factory reset?

I’m not saying there is any speed issue, those 700/500 speeds were on WiFi. Was just wondering if there was any advantage to setting up the VM router in bridge mode, but I don’t think there really is and a big disadvantage seems to be that you can’t use the 10Gbps port if you do
