Illegal Dumping

Hi, I found a black sack of rubbish in a ditch on the road not far from my house. I took the bag in and went through it and found a delivery label on a package. So I've evidence of who it is. I contacted the local authority and explained the situation and with that the girl on the phone said basically they cannot do anything now because I tampered with it. Is this normal. So basically we have 100% evidence and noting can be done. Anybody ever been in same situation. There's no way I can let this lie and these people get away. All I'd like is for them to be contacted and warned of what they have done. I know of the person that done it, from the local town, travelled approx 4miles to dump it.

If it goes to Court, the dumper will that you set it up because you have a grudge against them. There's a general principle that evidence presented in Court like this should be collected and analysed by an independent official, not by you or me.

I’d call to the address and drop the bag back in their lawn / driveway or drop it to their front door with the address on the label and say think you may have lost this bag… or you could name and shame take a photo of it with the address and use social media but that mightn’t be the best thing…

Because you went through the bag it could be argued you tampered with the contents or added something identifying to it, like the delivery label. Best to leave it untouched next time & just report it but I’m not sure how quickly the local authorities react to stuff like this & you could be waiting a while.

If you’re feeling morally righteous, a late-night/early morning trip to the mentioned address & leaving the bag of rubbish back at their place might make you feel better & also might stop it happening again but it’s a risky game, especially if you don’t know who they are or what their reaction might be.

It's lost property. You just need to return it to the owner.

There's always the outside chance the person on the label isn't the person who dumped it.

You could bring the bag to the address on the label and come at it from that point of view - "I thought you'd want to be told, somebody might think you've been dumping your rubbish on the roadside, but sure you would never do a scummy thing like that."

Advise them to have a bit of a think about who could possibly have dumped that black bag. Tell them you'll be keeping an eye out and together you'll catch the filthy fecker.

There is an app called see it?say it! It will notify the local authority of GPS coordinates, description, photo etc. They can then pick it up and go through it.

Tie the bag back up n get someone else to ring it in, don't mention they looked in it. There's a very slim chance that someone from the council will go through it.

Open it and empty it over their wall is what I'd do.

From personal experience I'd say, at least with the litter wardens in this county, there's absolute certainty that they'll go through it.

OP. Tie it back up. Leave it were you found it. Call the council litter line or have someone else phone it in.
