Thanks. I'll take a look at them but I assume it's just a case of breaking contract if the price changes through that means everyone else has changed

Maybe you can answer this bren if you don't mind. According to energypal when I enter the BWG D/N in as a custom plan it will cost only slightly more than the Energia smart plan. I would like to go for the BWG as it's fixed until September next year as you know. Do I have to get my meter changed or will the meter I have allow me to get this plan?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,984 ✭✭✭bren2001

Correct me but don't you have an activated smart meter and you're looking to sign up for the BWG Smart Dual Fuel Day/Night 18 Month Fixed Energy? To the best of my knowledge, that wouldn't require a meter change.

A meter change is only required on non-activated smart meters going from standard 24 hour → D/N. This is owing to the energy company not being provided access to the smart meter data in the same way. They are just given a single figure once a month from the ESB (I believe). With an activated smart meter, they've access to your 30 minutely data and can bill you accordingly.

I have a non-activated smart meter on std Flogas BWG 24hr rate (and i've just realised I'm at the higher rate for the last 2 months - totally forgot the rates would go to std after contract was up)

Rural Area, 1 EV, high household usage.

Currently looking at staying with Flogas BWG offer rate (assuming i can still get it) or the Energia AXA rate

But would there be any advantage to requesting meter change (RN108 iirc?) to facilitate d/n? Could that lead to better rate options?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,553 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

You're correct I have an activated smart meter, I'm looking at the electricity only deal, no piped gas here in the sticks😊. Thanks for that.

It will be cheaper at night. It's the 108.

I've a d/n meter and use about 60% of my electric at night between the phev, washing machine, dryer and dishwasher. I also manage to have an electric shower in the morning on night rate. Occasionally we'll put the oven on if one of us wakes up early.

Just calculated on my most recent bill, that I had 92% of usage on night rate, and over €60 rebate for exported electricity at the 20c/unit rate.

The search will be starting soon to change supplier as my contract is nearly up. Not looking forward to that again 😕

Depending on the EV usage, activating your smart meter and availing of dirt cheap EV charging rates would be the most effective. If you're registered with the ESB, pop your HDF into energypal (or other).

This thread is far more suitable for you: https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058226818/best-electricity-plan-for-new-ev-owners

You could probably get away without switching until October as you will get a lot of usage from your panels

Probably a long shot but does anyone have spare emerald Park tickets from flogas who they won't use or want to sell? pM me thanks

    be careful here…

I just went over my "contract date"… and switched from energia to EI. Then Enrergia rang, asked why i was leaving, and made an improved offer, which i took. Then EI rang, made a better offer, and i reversed again… basically NOT cancelling the move and accepted the new provider EI's offer.

Then the Energia bill comes and i got a 50 euro penalty for "breaking contract". It took a 15 minute phone call escalated to management to get refunded that charge… totally unjutified as i was still in 14 days cooling off with BOTH providers.

I would assume, lets say you didnt move form Energia within 14 days of an end of contract date - they will just start a NEW contract and charge you if u try to wait to chnage later in the year. Madness, but thats the logic of these comanies… and probaly they will get away with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,984 ✭✭✭bren2001

they will just start a NEW contract and charge you if u try to wait to chnage later in the year.

They don't. You move onto their higher tariff and a rolling contract with no termination fee. You can switch whenever you want.

I would assume the 50e charge came from you accepting the new deal, the system likely flagged it as an early exit. As you were in the 14 days, you had a right to cancel. You were refunded your €50.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,553 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Your last paragraph is rubbish. When your contract expires you go on the non discounted unit rates, you are not automatically entered into a new contract, that applies to BB and other contacted services across the board. Please don't be making assumptions trying to pass them off as fact. When Energia rang with the retention offer did you accept it? In doing so you entered a new contract.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,827 ✭✭✭yankinlk

Thanks for your opinion - but no i have not been refunded yet. I had to phone them and point out their error. They have verbally accepted after a "chat with my manager" that I was in the right. I have NOT seen this refund applied to my bill - yet. I expect i may need to call them a second time to get it applied…. hopefully i am wrong.

I was emailed a NEW contract by energia during this interaction. They would deifntely lock me in if i past my 14 day.

Assuing that they wont do the same if i didnt answer the phone or sign on a dotted line? maybe that is true… ill conceed that!

    Hey Everyone,

Have just moved into a new house and looking go get signed up with a gas and electricity supplier.

No solar or EV to consider at the moment.

Just wondering what's the best way to go about getting the best deal? Is the likes of Bonkers or Switcher showing the best deals on the market, or is it better to get on the phone to the different companies, do they offer better discounts than their websites show?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,827 ✭✭✭yankinlk

My real life experience is rubbish? mind yer manners mate.

I agree, by accepting the offer i entered a 14 day cooling off period contract. I also accepted a better offer in that same 14 day… but that didnt stop getting charge 50 euro instantly. Its just lucky i read my bills.

Im just trying to help other folks out here. what is yer motivation?

Any harm in asking what you were offered? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,720 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

Sounds like they are chancing their arm. I'd recommend you report it to the CRU. The CRU are toothless but it might make you feel better

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,720 ✭✭✭✭Red Silurian

We have 11 providers, they all publish their prices online and "hidden" ones regularly get published here

Your bill will be made up of a standing charge, a unit rate and taxes. Ideally you want the cheapest standing charge and unit rate, taxes can't be changed. If your usage is high then a cheaper unit rate can be more important than a cheaper unit rate. Conversely if your usage is low you'd be looking for the cheapest standing charge and can take a higher unit rate

They may have done the same thing, they may not. It’s unknown. it doesn’t change the fact that your statement is incorrect, when your contract ends, you do not roll onto a new contract with a 50e termination fee. You go onto a rolling contract with no termination fee typically at a higher rate.

Yes, when you agreed to the counter offer, that was a new contract. I’m unsure why that’s in capital letters, you agreed to a new 12 month contract. Nobody is disputing that.

Sometimes things go wrong, yours is an example. People should be careful but what you describe is not what normally happens

Downloading your HDF data from ESB Networks and getting one of the GenAI engines to analyze your usage is really really amazing and useful.

Here is what I've got from Microsoft co-pilot. I'm nearly a year into a new house and considering getting a rate with a night boost (I dont have an EV yet, but I think I can still sign up to Electic Ireland night boost rate).
The big spike you see at 6AM 7AM is my heat pump kicking in to heat the water. Heat pump comes on earlier in winter to heat underfloot heating.

I agreed with you… if I didn’t answer the three calls from energia when my first contract ended…. Or the 4 visits from sales people to the door …. I would have been able to stay on inflated rates post contract and free to change later.

Leccy companies also should respect the 14 day period to switch or change your mind…. In this case I’ve proved energia don’t allow swap swap swap in there system.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,827 ✭✭✭yankinlk

EI had a better night rate and day rate to whatever energia was offering. Energia rang me to ask why I was leaving and matched the offer. They also gave cash incentive that was only for new customers. I accepted and they asked me to cancel EI switch.
I called EI to cancel the swap and the lad on the phone offered to match the cash then and there. I said sure so left the swap carry on.
energia only responded with an email to remind me to cancel the swap, but no better offer…. Then they issued a bill for the break of contract.
to be fair this evening I see it’s been credited.

A single anecdote doesn't prove their system doesn't allow it. Its very much an edge case but there are examples of other people on this thread who have done similar things and not been charged.

Hopefully there's no issue getting your €50. If there is, I'd complain to the CRU, you might get compensation.

    You couldn't quote the rates could you-I,m D/N too.👍

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,553 ✭✭✭✭CoBo55

Your reply got you only one thanks sadly. My motivation is to stop people spreading untruths. In your last paragraph you made the assumption that when your contract with Energia ends you are automatically entered into a new contract, as bren also pointed out, this is not what happens. You were the one who made the new contract with Energia and then decided to move again, if it was within the 14 day period (providing you didn't waive that) you are entitled to your €50 back. Only listening back to the recording will reveal that.
