Donegal drawing the short straw of a six day turnaround.

Should be a good turnout from Meath. They will probably be on the Hill in big numbers.

Is the Sunday likely to sell out?

They are getting shafted to be fair. Toughest Championship schedule to date having played 8 Championship games, mostly against Div 1 opposition. Last team to play over the weekend yet first on next weekend. 6 day turnaround vs. Kerry's 8. It isn't right at all but TV takes priority over fairness of competition to them.

Obviously the fairer solution would have been to have the 2 teams who played yesterday on the Sunday slots next weekend but then there would be uproar about having the 2 more attractive games on paper both being shown on GAA+ only.

Pretty unfair on them tbh. They should just have given everyone 7 days rest. This decision is just to maximise revenue.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 813 ✭✭✭Stewball

As a Galway fan, I'm glad it's them and not us, but you're right it is unfair.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭henke

This is it. They need to look at getting two weeks between all Championship matches in future so they can balance fairness to the teams with the flexibility of what goes on which TV slot.

It is part of the jeopardy built into the Group system. Seeds 1 like Donegal should take advantage of having their home game against a Seed 3. They failed, and that has led to them missing out on the extra week off. Monaghan should be the freshest team.

Or give the calendar room to breathe. But it suits the clubs to have the counties condensed so tightly so I guess no one cares that this happens?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,171 ✭✭✭✭breezy1985

That would give the group winner 3 weeks off which people would claim is too much.

There is simply no way to avoid someone moaning about something when it comes to the GAA.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,663 ✭✭✭keeponhurling

    Yeah, it's a tricky balance.

If they had 2 weeks between all games, then the group winners could (justifiably) complain that 4 weeks without a game works against them and kills momentum.

??? that makes no sense. kerry also failed to top the group but get a 8 days turnaround.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,404 ✭✭✭✭dxhound2005

The bookies are paying no heed to the shorter layoff for Donegal. Donegal 1/3, Monaghan 11/4. Too much being made of the one day difference. The calculation should be between Donegal having 7 days and Monaghan 14, not some other team having 8.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,432 ✭✭✭henke

I don’t disagree with that. They have had to play an extra game because of it and that’s the rules but am more getting at the combination of a short window and a 6 v 8 with Kerry who were also not top seeds and throwing tv into the mix then. The fact is they could handle it fairer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,735 ✭✭✭paddyisreal

no the calculation should be made on the fact that every other team who played in the pre lim quarter is getting 7 or more days. Donegal are being hard done by.

That Monaghan/Donegal game could easily go to extra time and if Donegal lose it at that stage, there'll be some amount of giving out about the scheduling.

He finally has reason to crib. The cribbing over the Mayo match being in Hyde park was a bit much. He has been cribbing about the new rules since the start

The Donegal Mayo game being in Roscommon did favour Mayo more so Donegal had a point to complain about, whether there was a fairer suitable option available is debatable and complaints about hotels etc may not have been valid but it doesn’t change the fact that the venue was closer to Mayo and their team were more familiar with the ground so it disadvantaged Donegal as a neutral venue. They have been hard done by now with the 6 day turnaround for the quarter final so complaints will again be valid. Again it may be the best option for the game in terms of TV, ticketing and ordering of the matches on the day but in terms of getting the best treatment for team preparation Donegal are being treated badly.

The GAA said they would have used Sligo, but it is closed at present. They gave an explanation of why some other venues like Cavan and Clones could not be used either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 20,755 ✭✭✭✭Bass Reeves

Kerry had travel to Tullamore to play Meath. It's a lot nearer Navan than Killarney. 1 hour V 3 hours. I sure Meath had played there a few times as well. While Portlaois is kinda half way between Clare and Louth its in Leinster so Louth teams would be more familiar with it.

There Is very few 100% neutral venues. Roscommon was a fairly fair choice. Donegal woukd have played D1 abd D2 league matches there over the years. Jim was just having a crib as usual trying to develop a beige mentality in the squad

Yeah they said they couldn’t play Mayo Donegal in Cavan or Clones as the counties were playing the same day. Makes sense for Cavan as that game had to be on at the same time as the Mayo Donegal game but not sure about the Monaghan Down game. Was it preset to have that group have its games on the same day as the Mayo Donegal group or was that a CCCC decision?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 145 ✭✭cgorzy

yeah Tullamore was a venue favourable to Meath over Kerry. Donegal/McGuinness not justified in claiming they were the only team disadvantaged in that round by the ground choices.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,370 ✭✭✭theoneeyedman

TV schedules shouldn't have any impact on fairness of fixtures, where the possibility of giving all 7 teams 6 days between the games was easily achieved as in this case it should have been done. Jimmy can FRO with his griping about having to play in Roscommon due to having to travel the 20 minutes from their hotel in Athlone, but it's fair to say that they are getting a raw deal here being the last team on Sunday and the first team on Saturday.

For anyone saying we should have 1 weeks between games, to let the games 'breathe' oh please.…the same people will often say there should be no extra time, so 2 weeks now mean 3 weeks between games to account for draws. We're back to the season taking 9 months and finals in October with this thinking, with all club games delayed while the last 6 or 8 teams finish the championship.... Nonsense talk.

They’re all amateur players making a huge commitment to try and accomplish something. In this phase this will be their 3rd championship weekend on the spin, the GAA had the opportunity to do the right thing but they didn’t take it.
