If the US doesn't care, why are they asking China to speak with Iran?

You must be aware that oil is traded globally and if the straights are closed, it means the price of US oil will also increase worldwide. The US won't be shielded by the price increases, so they the US would care.

You say about Isreal "but they run the West". Sounds like the old World Jewish Conspiracy spouted by the Nazis. I don't care much for Israel's war in Gaza, but spare us the tired old World Jewish Conspiracy trope.

I don't think the Iranians pussyfooting on this has done them any favours. When it comes to nuclear politics, maybe it's always going to be a delicate game of brinkmanship, but they'll look back on this and just wish they'd gone for a bomb years ago. As the world tips back to 'might is right' international politics, have a decent stockpile of nukes could be the only way to guarantee your territorial integrity. Look what it's done for North Korea.

The Iranians appear to have little else in the way of hard power, anyway. Their air force looks to be a complete joke.

And that strategic reserve is a major point.

Estimates are that it is between 400 and 500 million barrels so as you say they could go without oil via the Hormuz strait for quite some time and most importantly a lot longer than the rest of the world , so it's a massive point of leverage for them if the Iranians do decide to lock traffic up.

They were going to win the "tariff war" anyway , but it's now game set and match if Iran shut the Strait of Hormuz..

I’m sure too that The US military we’re peppering to try out it’s new ‘TOY’ on a regime that has little chance of responding - at least directly

Because it’s China, India etc that do all of the importing from the Gulf as per infographic posted earlier showing the main producers and consumers?

A Russian "biznessman", if you offered him a dollar today or two dollars tomorrow would come back on the third day and demand 3 dollars off you, except this time he has a gun.

Netanahyu got 28 standing ovations in a joint sitting of the US congress and senate while the IDF were murdering civilians indiscriminately.

I don't believe in a Jewish conspiracy either, but it's hard not to acknowledge that there's a dangerous "promised land" symbiotic relationship betwixt Israel and the USA.

Trump moving the US embassy to Jerusalem during his first term effectively withdrew the US support for any two state solution.

In which it's apparent that Trump is conducting foreign policy for praise via Fox f**king news..

If anything, it's a Christian conspiracy whereby conservative American Christians appear to believe quite strongly in a powerful Israel. I think it was Michael Clarke the other week who said that they believe the final judgement can only occur, and heaven and earth be reunited, when the Jewish people are back in the holy land. He quoted that text that Huckabee sent to Trump about it,

“Mr. President, God spared you in Butler, PA. to be the most consequential President in a century — maybe ever. The decisions on your shoulders I would not want to be made by anyone else. You have many voices speaking to you Sir, but there is only ONE voice that matters. HIS voice. I am your appointed servant in this land and am available for you but I do not try to get in your presence often because I trust your instincts. No President in my lifetime has been in a position like yours. Not since Truman in 1945. I don’t reach out to persuade you. Only to encourage you. I believe you will hear from heaven and that voice is far more important than mine or ANYONE else’s.

You sent me to Israel to be your eyes, ears and voice and to make sure our flag flies above our embassy. My job is to be the last one to leave. I will not abandon this post. Our flag will not come down! You did not seek the moment. This moment sought You! It is my honor to serve you!”

I'm sure there are also Jewish businesspeople of a strong and uncompromising Zionist worldview and who have the money to influence political outcomes, but I don't think they're the main thrust of it by any means. And there are also prominent Jewish people who decry what the modern state of Israel does.

Despite a visible movement in the United States that speaks out against the human rights abuses and general crimes of Netanyahu's government, it would appear that the general US public is still considerably more pro-Israel than not. You only have to look at how fractured Kamala Harris's messaging was on her support for Israel, trying to speak out of both sides of her mouth, to see that even the alternative to Trump still had to toe the line on the subject.

The funny bit of that is the heaven reference.

I'm not religious but if there was a heaven there isn't an earthly hope that Trump would be at the door nevermind be welcomed in.

Without doubt he'd be in the smoking fires of hell.

When you have multiple women accusing you of sexual assault and others saying you groomed, groped or had sex with them when they were underage I think that'd be enough to keep you out.

And that's without the multitude of other crimes he's been charged with and hopefully will be convicted of before he dies.

I guess we'll see but I read analysis how they've still got a lot of shorter range cruise missiles which could be used to target American bases so they could kick up a fuss yet.

I don't think going for it earlier would have worked. Western intelligence and mossad would have known and if they went for it pre Iraq/Afghanistan America might have pulled the Iraq stunt but on them instead.

It's funny, or maybe not funny, how a country that's massively stocked with nuclear warheads is so against another country having them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 23,829 ✭✭✭✭Tell me how

More and more you can see Trump's actions motivating countries to develop their own arsenal.

The outright bullying of other sovereign nations under the guise of world safety while actively bombing them will p*ss a lot of people off.

His rhetoric is always deplorable, but his tone and message in the last few days is particularly nauseating.

  • Site Banned Posts: 2,753 ✭✭✭thatsdaft

So trump finally noticed that Russia makes nuclear threats literally every day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,814 ✭✭✭✭briany

Sure, they could do that, but all it would really achieve is that the U.S. feels more justified in bombing the f out of them in return. It gives the international community (or the West, anyway) a better excuse to row in behind the U.S. as well. Not to mention that the U.S. would continue to target specific leaders of the Iranian government, up to and including the Ayatollah. These people may style themselves as religious fanatics with a zest for martyrdom, but underneath it, I think they're like the rest of us and aren't in any great hurry to meet their maker…

I think the smartest thing Iran could do now is go for a bomb any way they can and use that as a basis of negotiation. Either that or drop its stance on Israel.

    It's simple enough.

Trump wants America to have the most weapons, the greatest weapons, more weapons than you've ever seen, nobody has ever had as many weapons than we do, and they are the biggest, so big.

Trumps mind is like Highlander - "There can be only one".

In his tiny under-developed brain , there has to be a clear "winner" and everyone else has to be clear "losers" , the idea of mutual benefit etc. is utterly beyond him.

And the "winner" has to be him.

Iran just tried to bomb a US base in Qatar, will MAGA still say the US isn't at war and Trump is the president of peace?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,902 ✭✭✭RoyalCelt

Personally I think they'll be invaded and the regime changed if they take that strategy.

Look's like they've decided to attack American bases instead. Personally I think it's within their right from their point of view but I don't think the Qatari's will be happy about this. And with Trump in charge you might have the USAF joining the Israeli's. Could be a tough future for Iran.

Surely they won't be stupid enough to target Saudi territory?

Iran fired missiles at US bases in Qatar and Bahrain. Missiles were intercepted.

Popcorn at the ready! Isn't it great being from a country that doesn't invade others or try building nuclear weapons 😎

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,184 ✭✭✭EltonJohn69

I think that “attack” shows that Iran have been neutered and there won’t be any large scale retaliation /escalation. Trump and the right will be claiming his attack on Iran as a major win.

It's a long running sore with members of the UN general assembly that the select members of the UN security council can veto resolutions voted on at the UN. Earlier this year, the US ambassador and the Russian ambassador to the UN had, with their home Govts permission, cobbled together a plan to scuttle the Ukraine delegation's 3rd anniversary resolution condemning the Russian invasion of their country and demanding a full withdrawal.

However, the plan, like a lot of human plans, went wrong. The US Ambassador [a seasoned diplomat] allegedly told the UK and French ambassadors that Ukraine should withdraw its resolution. Both those Govts took the issue up separately with the security council and the general assembly and the US/Russia resolution had to be amended by the US to include language affirming Ukraine's territorial integrity.

In Feb this year, the US voted against Ukraine’s own resolution that clearly condemned the Russian invasion, further fuelling tensions among allies. The US ambassador was promoted in Jan from the deputy ambassadorship there, having got the deputy's job in 2024 after serving as the US ambassador in Lebanon from 2020 to 2023, meaning she served both Biden and Trump admins without a bother to them.

Invaded by who? Its a country of 92 million people with a terrain nearly entirely composed of mountains or incredibly difficult terrain. Thats 3 times the population as Iraq in 2003, with a landmass also 3 times the size of Iraq and impossible to simply drive across like was possible in the Iraqi desert. Invasion on the scale you are suggesting to enact a military victory, cause a regime change and maintain order is unfeasible.

Trump is like that pigeon you try to play chess with. They knock over all the pieces, crap on the board and strut around like they won.
