I had solar panels for heating hot water and a bigger insulated tank with element on top 5foot plus in size.

If i switch immersion on i get a sound like getting an electric current so not using it as fear its not safe and last few months sound changed when powering it on as possibly on its last legs.

1 Element no bath and only heating up water in the immersion .

How much might i be looking at to get someone to supply and fit a new one to suit it.

Is it a sort of fizzing sound? Do you have hard water?

Suppose i could say fizzing as new to me on hearing that.

    No hard water here.

Mine makes a fizzing sound when it's on. I regard it as normal. If you have hard water it can get louder over time.

Having replaced multiple elements due to hard water, my advice would be leave it if it's heating water. When mine go, it's always signalled by the RCD tripping when the timer switches it on. The jacket around the element develops a hole due to corrosion, letting water in and tripping the RCD.

I might have finally gotten on top of my hard water issue with the last element I fitted, as it has a titanium jacket, which shouldn't corrode.

Well used to the normal sound of like a kettle been switched on and also boosting it when in bed , this new noise i wont use it as think not safe. No hard water issues here.

Just switch it off, isolate if possible, remove the immersion cover and look for any burnt wires.

Take the immersion cover off then and take a few photos of the wiring.

Right went back up there for a closer look and switched it on , sparks burning and flames from the base of the black unit that takes the wires and goes down a tube at at the base is the issue. Not sure if its all one unit or not as put in same time as solar panels 2010.

Someone asked if i got a stainless steel model fitted or copper?

Likely a faulty thermostat. Simple enough repair, you just need to get a thermostat that is slim enough to fit in that existing pocket.

What i did notice there is no movement in the thermostat where a video i viewed it could move .

I do wonder if it arc welded to the element with no movement does it mean it might not come out.

I would also assume different lengths for different elements.

I am now thinking with all the sparks and smoke at the base of the thermostat it is the element and whole unit needs replacing and stat can rotate now as thought it was seized.

The whole lot comes in one piece. You will need an immersion spanner to remove it. Bring the old one with you.

It's a few years since I replaced mine but I think it was 30-40 Euros at the time.

I have a team coming on Monday to service my Thermal Solar Panels and when here getting them to look at it as they have a photo of label on tank and element to see its a 24" , no bath.

Had to get plumber out today for shower tray leak and while here i got him to replace element as completely fried is why it nearly went on fire.

Only issue now is the shorter cable does not reach the switch on the wall.

    Shrinkflation at its best.
