We do not discuss actions taken against other posters. I did not see the post you are referencing above. I saw the post you were warned for. I assumed you were referring to the post you replied to. Your reply was uncivil. It was attacking the poster. As per the forum rules your warning comes with a ban.

"Take you to task" - reprimand or criticize someone severely for a fault or mistake.

The poster pulled you up on what they felt were faults or mistakes in your post. I wouldn't say it was even that severe. They argued the points of your post. You played the man, not the ball.

You rightly received a warning. That you don't agree with it is largely irrelevant.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 892 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

And who is that poster to tell me I've made a 'fault or a mistake' that I deserve to be 'taken to task' on? Why do they get to make that call just because they have a different opinion to me?

Either way, one word smart-hole posts like 'ok' are fine and yet genuine efforts to explain and expand on a point are a waste of everyone's time.

Got it. I'll apply that bollocks logic in future as means to 'improving the quality' of my posts.

You let timewasters and trolls off with murder because without them your business model goes to pot.

EDIT: And to follow on from this, I have a conversation with the moderator who banned me, who has clearly made no effort whatsoever to read any of my messages, and his response is 'I'm done explaining simple concepts to you'.

Honestly, on what planet does anybody get away with talking to another person like that?

Is it any wonder trolls can do whatever they want when Mods respond to others with contempt like that?

You'll all do nothing, of course.

    What are you on about?!

It's an open discussion forum. You posted something. Anybody who wants to is entitled to tell you they disagree with you or you're wrong or they have a different opinion to you. Anybody who wants is entitled to comment on your post so long as they stay within the forum rules.

That poster stayed within the forum rules. You didn't.

Now, I'm also done explaining simple concepts to you. If after 3 or 4 replies you don't get it then you're not going to get it and I'm not going to waste any more time explaining. You are skating very close to a siteban for uncivil posting in this forum too.

How can a Mod thank their own post? In the below thread the OP thanked their own post #1.

It's boards Vanilla glitch, that if you click on the thanks to view the thanks you can inevitably thank your own post

Not on this thread at all, but I really don't have the ego to go thanking myself or even looking who might have.

    I do have a question.

I'd PM the mod, but I can't see any mod name, at least on mobile, for who to ask.

This thread opened in After Hours:

I'm curious to know why this was closed?

If it was outside the bounds of AH - then maybe move it to CA? I can see that, yes, there was a bit of bickering, but nothing too outrageous IMO and tbh I felt like maybe it was actually getting back on track in terms of people getting back to discussing the central crux of the thread topic - which is an interesting one in my view: do you stick to your political "side" no matter what. Maybe that's more of a politics conversation, but then move it - why close it completely?

I occasionally get the sense that thread closure is used more and more as a tool of moderation.

We must be reading a different thread, lol.
There was more than just a bit of bickering in there. The OP seemed to have a bit of a meltdown and started attacking posters directly, over nonsense. In fairness, you did try and steer it back on track but the damage was already done.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,410 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Okay, I accept that there was more than "a bit" if I'm being scrupulously honest: the OP did seem to want to have a go directly in the responses to people who disagreed with them…but also, by the context of a fractious thread on boards, it wasn't the most bitter or gone completely to the dogs either. I felt that there was still a possibility to have a discussion there and the OP apologised for missing someone's drift.

Look, maybe it wasn't going to be one for the ages and it could have gone sideways again, but I thought there was some potential for a discussion there.

From a user perspective what frustrates me then is to see something closed with no information about why, or who closed it.

I think at the very least if a moderator closes a thread there should be at least a sentence to explain why. Just as an explanatory courtesy.

I was on that thread and a fair few posts had to be deleted by a mod already before it was closed and the OP was on the verge of out and out trolling IMO with some comments. I agree though maybe it could have been given time to settle down before closing it without explanation like so many threads.

If you look at the first post you should be able to see who closed the thread. In this case, it looks like it was Ten of Swords.

Other AH mods are @Kimbot @Gremlinertia and @JupiterKid

Can something better not be put in place though? That doesn't say who closed the thread unless you know to read in between the lines, which now I do know how to!

Generally when I close a thread I put a new post on the thread after I close it with a message as to why I closed it:

e.g: "[MOD] Thread closed as the topic is more applicable to X Section" etc.

All forum bans in CA, except permanent bans, are now lifted and moderation will be limited only to anything illegal, abusive/threatening behavior or matters before the courts.

In the latest rules for CA there is nothing in it prohibiting trolling. Or going completely off topic. Or dumping memes. For example.

Is attack the post not the poster still a thing?

Back seat moderation or discussing moderation on thread?

It would be good to get clarity on whether there are general site rules still in force on CA and if so what they are.

I'd say if it crosses the line into abusive/threatening it'll be actioned, other than that I'd say it's up to the mod what they action or not, I wouldn't be questioning them on thread just in case. Could be a case of permanent ban, no appeal, all bets are off at this stage I think

The 'terms' do say "don't treat others with disrespect" so being a dick would seem to fall under that.

So it would be good to get clarity on whether these apply in CA.

We expect you to act responsibly in posting Material on Boards.ie. You agree, through use of this service, NOT to use boards.ie to:

    • post illegal Material
    • treat others with disrespect
    • defame, abuse, harass, stalk, threaten or otherwise violate the rights (such as rights of
    • privacy and publicity) of others
    • identify or speculate as to the identity of any anonymous or pseudonymous user
    • post any unsolicited or unauthorised advertising, promotional content, 'junk mail', 'spam', 'chain letters', 'pyramid schemes', or any other form of commercial publicity
    • post any abusive, harmful, vulgar, obscene, sexually explicit, indecent, profane, inappropriate, or racially, ethnically or otherwise objectionable Material, except where the content is appropriate to the content of the forum and you have been granted specific permission to do so and subject to our guidelines on said content
    • post Material that contains violence, or offensive subject matter or contains a link to an adult website
    • post Material in respect of any matter that is currently before the courts
    • post Material that could be construed as scandalising the courts
    • post Material that promotes or encourages illegal activity or facilitates or encourages any violation of these Terms of Use
    • post Material that infringes any patent, trademark, trade secret, copyright, rights of privacy or publicity, or other proprietary right or intellectual property right of any party
