The iPlayer is an absolute pita to use sometimes for no apparent reason as is the channel 4 player

try a different uk location also maybe the static ones on surfshark

I get that and other errors regularly on iPlayer, as Nowso says try a different location. Note I also get the same behaviour on an Nvida Shield on the main TV.

The dance I find helps is to launch iPlayer, then launch the VPN, and go back to iPlayer. If I do it the other way (VPN first) invariably I get the error and have to come out and change location. It'll sometime happen again after watching an episode, in which case change the location.

I'm using NordVPN - not sure if there's any difference with others.

I have getflix and Vodafone broadband and it goes through phases where you regularly have to hit update on the getflix app - not much of a job I know.

More on point with iplayer. Sometimes if it's not working I flick between the 5ghz and 2.4 on the wifi and that gets it to work.

Cant recall who posted it, but STV has been suggested as a good alternative to iPlayer as it shares a lot of content, but is more VPN friendly.

Its an alternative to ITVX rather than iplayer

Why is friend who recommended Firestick to me saying I would be better using it through a smart tv,

And does it have any or no impact on its streaming speeds if I do or dont use one.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 784 ✭✭✭Timistry

Is your friend saying you would be better off running the IPTV app on the TV itself?

In that case, I would say that is incorrect. A firestrick has more processing power than most smart TVs and is specifcally designed for streaming content

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

Yeah I was guessing that, basically to say going wireless therefore less travel & processing time. But I never asked

Im only using mobile data to stream it and it's been pretty unconvincing so far with a lot of pausing, repeating and shuffling. 5/6 MBPS is the general top speed for it and then 1 meg less during peak time. Even that should still be enough for quality SD streaming.

Funny thing is I had an older box (not firestick) that i got on DoneDeal, which 90% of the time worked no problem using the same mobile data. Software just got old on it so I had to look for alternatives.

When you say you are using mobile data - are you using a router with a sim card or hot-spotting via your phone?

If its your phone, how often do you do this eg every day or evening?

5 or 6 on mile data is not going to work really

try put the phone modem in the windows up against the glass the tranmitter area

Does your TV have an eithernet port and is this what you're friend means.

At 5/6mbs per second your connection is not particularly fast. While WiFi is useful there will be some loss of speed. At higher rates it is not so noticeable but at those speeds it might be better to use a wired connection to maximise what you have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

No ethernet port, everything transmitted is wirelessly. According to area checker, Fibre is available to me to the max 1GB. Whatever that will realistically equate to on wireless I don't know

igb would be near 1gb on your wifi - 500mb is enough for you

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

    Cheers

Yeah just comparing prices at the moment with the providers. Obviously that half way drop down to 500mb is available too.

You are saying the lower 500mb option would provide a solid wifi base to it???

Are the "fastest speeds" mobile data of any use??

I don't want to be paying on the double but don't want the inferior option either.

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

mobile internet will not be good enough in nearly all cases , but 6 is not good enough . iv got 500 mb and can run multiple streams at once .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

Yeah sounds like my initial thinking choice wise then.

Downgrade what im getting on my mobile and use the saving to put in something for the home for wireless streaming

Least viable for now would be the smart tv for wired (ethernet) streaming. That can wait till later

Any reason why a firestick would be struggling with 300+mbs download. Going back on the stream then jumping forward? Download speed verified on firestick itself

It's a shared network between a few individuals but nobody on it right now as i type so absolutely no interference or anything like that

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 6,104 Mod ✭✭✭✭Nowso

wifi interference . or the server your connecting to having issues , a lot of sites went a bit funny today

Hard to say without specific info:

What exact model FTV stick are you using?

Also is the wifi connection direct to the router or via an access point/extender or a mesh system?

    Have you sideloaded apps?

For a start I would reboot Firestick and router:

    Some possible causes on device:

    • Low storage - unload apps or other files
    • Low memory - clear cache and force stop all streaming apps
    • Outdated firmware
    • Overheating - a hot firestick may not function correctly.
    • Has a VPN been left on
    • Mismatch between display settings and TV specs - Turn off "Match original frame rate"

    Some possible causes on router:

    • Device Priority settings
    • Channel overlap
    • QoS Settings

Not sure about those issues you mention but I have worked on a few of them like reboots and freeing up space. The firestick is only recent so won't be much change to it beyond factory settings.

I never liked the RTE Player (and it can be pretty slow) so I tried it on my phone and put rte on on the firestick simultaneously.

The RTE player on my phone never once stopped but the firestick always had buffering.

It's only ever being the other way around for me so IDK

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

yeah so low and behold (unsurprising) I got that package and have given it a try out with the firestick here.

its evident during peak times that wifi could be a problem (like now) as there is a lot of buffering even though the download speed is very high.

And it's doing pretty much what it was doing with mobile data so back to square one

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,602 ✭✭✭Nigzcurran

What exactly is buffering on the stick? All apps such as netflix, Disney, YouTube and IPTV or just certain ones?

Time is contagious, everybody's getting old.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

I only use the iptv so that's the main problem. I dont use netflix. I tested a prime video here and its free flowing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,523 ✭✭✭con747

Try it using proton vpn, it's free on the Firestick apps. I found it helped to stop buffering on my IPTV.

check your wifi signal on the network tab - try moving your modem higher and clearer if possible - changing wifi channel can help 2

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 40 pacoraban

Tried it. Unless it picks up later still having the same problems. Repeats the same thing 3 or 4 time live then skips onto where the stream should be

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,523 ✭✭✭con747

Would it be a provider issue? Try putting this url http://bit.ly/3Qj2eLD on to a playlist and see how it works. I have a crap wireless broadband with speeds barely above 10 MB and i'm watching the US open all weekend with no issues using the SSIPTV app which is free but I don't think it's on the stick. You can use a 7 day trial of one that is to check though.
