It’s worse when it’s not obvious who the nickname is for.

“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be” - A. Dumbledore

“It is not blood that makes you Irish but a willingness to be part of the Irish nation” - Thomas Davis

It's something we definitely need to clamp down on a bit more I think. I share your irrational annoyance over it. It's childish and does nothing to add to any argument one can make. I don't know if I'd be inclined to ban someone or subject them to the increasing sanctions over it though, most likely a 0 point warning would be enough at least initially as long as it wasn't repeated offences.

it's the same as the names used for football personalities, zero need for it, it isn't funny more than once, and the person typing it is definitely sitting there high-fiving themselves with a smug grin for getting "one over" on the other side

Yes and the daily fail and grift among other childish posts.

Offer nothing and should be actioned.

Good luck with trying to implement that on the Trump thread.

Put a 'may be a juvenile' sticker on their profile pic if they use silly nicknames?😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 18,195 ✭✭✭✭Goldengirl

How about gifs , emojis and silly signatures ?

Let's ban ' em all and really get serious 😵‍💫

None of these nor those above seem like serious issues and think people are looking for something to give out about if posting about them .

Boards is a million times better than many other sites where all you get is txt speak and pictures on discussion threads .

Maybe being able to recognise a joke comment would save you some time?

Likewise 😁 from one emoji to another , Francie .

I would think nicknames are used in every forum in some post on here, hands up I am guilty of it and don't see it as a big issue

What’s the story with anecdotes? I assumed it was where someone repeated a story they heard from a third party? I’m now banned from the current affairs because I questioned a poster getting a warning for relating how on flight from Cape Town he noticed how big a country Nigeria was and how far it was from Ireland. Are personal experiences now classed as anecdotes?

Just one thread in CA. It's clearly indicated in the OP of said thread.

The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners in Egypt. I am the LORD your God.

    Leviticus 19:34

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,669 ✭✭✭Patrick2010

So how is someone saying they noticed how big Nigeria is when flying over it classified as an anecdote?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

They specifically are disallowed in the Soccer Forum, I think you can call Roy Keane "Keano", because that's not derogatory, but you can't call Liverpool "Liverpoo" because that has the potential to offend sensibilities.

It's just extremely childish, I think you have to be at least 13 to post here....

I suppose I'd class it as 'trivially annoying' rather than wanting to see people banned for it though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,924 ✭✭✭Hodors Appletart

    you think ?

There are certainly fans of most clubs who get very upset if anyone even lightly slags their club or says anything critical, but then there are people who use terms like "ManUre" to purposely antagonise people like that, and then it all descends into a he said she said, they started it ma, and the real topic is forgotten about.

Could have said look at the map, and posted an actual link to the map comparing it to say Ireland .

Who knows what is true if any old cobblers is allowed on that thread .

It's explained by a mod in the OP as you know and has been here too so .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭Hungry Burger

The moderation on that one particular thread is nothing short of disgraceful. There’s one particular poster on that thread that breaks all the rules constantly and nothing is ever done, derails the thread and is uncivil yet can get away with their behaviour carte blanche.

I’ve also noticed that some of my posts there will just go mysteriously missing. I’ll never receive a warning or a pm from a mod, the post will just disappear. If the post had broken any site rules surely I would have been warned? Which makes me think the post was deleted just because the moderator didn’t agree with it or it hit too close to home.

Your posts might be deleted in a series of posts. Or might have replied to a post that was warned or deleted.

Or your post might be a bit offtopic, or breach a rule etc and it's a toss up between giving you a warning or just removing the post, and giving you a bit of leeway on the thread. If you'd prefer I can let the Moderators know to apply warnings instead of giving you leeway.

They have no problem warning me…believe me.

My latest ban was for saying there was a Chinese takeaway in my town. An anecdote apparently.

There’s no point even speaking up anymore as you just get a smart arse response such as above.

World War III is breaking out and we can't meme about it ...

It's a strange rule, I reported a mod posting an anecdote last week which was okay.

I seen a poster warned for posting a link to Twitter as an anecdote.

It should be black and white, but obviously not.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭Hungry Burger

In fairness, I dealt with the mod who banned me and was very fair and overturned the ban. I can see why the anecdote rule was brought in even if I personally disagree with the rule but what can be considered an “anecdote” is very subjective.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,040 ✭✭✭✭sligeach

Trust me, people get banned from there for infinitely less. I know, I'm one of them. And opening disputes is completely pointless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 9,698 ✭✭✭Backstreet Moyes

The rule is fair for the Walter mitty types we seen over the years.

They have a relation in every town or city in the world who has nothing but positive experiences with immigration.

The lad who had a relation everywhere who had negative stores about immigrants.

Seeing someone banned for mentioning they have a relation of you warned for saying their is a Chinese in your area.

There is probably a Chinese in every city in the world and everyone in the world has a relation.

It has turned into a complete farce what people are warned for.

    What happened to common sense.

It is fairly obvious what anecdotes should be actioned or not, a blanket ban and ridiculous warnings just makes no sense

So tonight I get threatened, merely a warning from the mod.

However, I respond to a post that is trolling, and then another post that says it's 'taking me to task' - and I get a forum ban.

This place is a disgrace. A threat gets a mere warning but me responding to someone saying they're 'taking me to task' is worthy of a ban.

There has to be something done about time-wasters here. I make a genuine effort to have a discussion and, when applicable, I back up my opinions with facts. These posts are responded to with utter contempt and yet they go unpunished. However, if I dare to respond to them, I get punished.

The timewasters run the asylum, and those who are genuinely trying to have a discussion are sanctioned.

You were threatened? You were disagreed with!

You on the other hand were uncivil and attacked the poster. Multiple times in a fairly lengthy post. From my reading of it you were the only one who responded "with utter contempt" as you put it.

Disingenuous feedback will get you banned from here too. Something to keep in mind.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,167 ✭✭✭For Petes Sake

    You're talking about different posts.

I had one direct to me 'do you want to meet somewhere? DM if you do' which I see has a threat. The poster was merely warned for this. Why was I threatened? Because I said the poster was running away when he refused to even acknowledge an effort I made to expand on a point he disagreed with, after he specifically said he doesn't do this.

So, in other words, trolling. He challenged me, I wasted my time expanding on my point and he couldn't even be bothered.

You can withdraw your remark that it was merely 'a disagreement' - specifically to try and make me look daft, stupid and imply that I'm lying, thank you.

And 'the utter contempt' was one poster telling me he was 'taking me to task', that's far more than utter contempt - that's a disgraceful thing to say. My 'attacking the poster' was me saying how dare they use that type of language like my opinion is far beneath them.

This isn't disingenuous feedback. I'm on record here saying that I took a forum ban from CA on the chin. However, in Rugby, I made a genuine effort to expand on my points when I'm challenged. Lengthy posts backed up in facts, and I'm met with a mere 'ok'. That smart-holery is only going to drive people away from the forum. It's dismissive, it's expressing that my opinion is beneath theirs, and again it's trolling.

This happens all across boards. Plenty posters who make genuine efforts to expand on any point they make are being dismissed and borderline mocked with one-line smart-arse responses and nothing is done about it. Yet when a poster gets frustrated that it went through all that effort to have a genuine conversation, they get banned.

I used to give mods a bit of credit because I can't imagine how tough a job it is, but when time-wasters get away with murder it's gets harder and harder to do so, especially when I put so much time and energy into my posts to prove my point.

I'm being told to improve the quality of my posts yet people are constantly not having to improve theirs. Of course posters are going to be frustrated when the rules being forced on me, never seem to apply to them unless they threaten another poster.

EDIT: Another genuine effort made to engage despite me being called a liar, no doubt it will be dismissed with another one-line smart-arse response.

We do not discuss actions taken against other posters. I did not see the post you are referencing above. I saw the post you were warned for. I assumed you were referring to the post you replied to. Your reply was uncivil. It was attacking the poster. As per the forum rules your warning comes with a ban.

"Take you to task" - reprimand or criticize someone severely for a fault or mistake.

The poster pulled you up on what they felt were faults or mistakes in your post. I wouldn't say it was even that severe. They argued the points of your post. You played the man, not the ball.

You rightly received a warning. That you don't agree with it is largely irrelevant.
