So sad to hear of the death of the legendary Beach Boy. An absolute visionary and pioneer in the music industry. Pet Sounds remains an unbelievably good album to this day.

Heard that song just this morning on the radio, and was thinking what a brilliant song it is.

    RIP Brian Wilson.

Another 1960s musical genius and legend has gone.

Pet Sounds was an absolutely amazing album and I would dare to suggest that the Beach Boys were actually ahead of the curve in comparison to The Beatles at the time it was released in 1966. It is said that when Brian Wilson first heard Sergeant Pepper in 1967, he broke down in tears because he thought that he could never better the famous concept album* by The Beatles, but I think he already had with Pet Sounds. It was an incredibly ground-breaking and innovative album at a time when music was changing at a frenetic pace.

I believe Wilson was also a bit of an "acid casualty" in the late 1960s over his heavy LSD use and he did become very withdrawn afterwards, leaving the Beach Boys and opening a health food store, but not to the extent of the damage it wrought on Syd Barratt and Peter Green who were both destroyed by acid.

*I think Sergeant Pepper, whilst brilliant, is a bit over-rated - I personally consider Revolver the best work by the Fab Four.

I had Good Vibrations on a 45, [vinyl!]. I thought it was brilliant then. It has the same effect on me today.

I was privileged to see Brian in the Bord Gais a few years ago playing the full Pet Sounds and a few of the BB classics. A true innovator and musical genius. RIP.

    RIP Brian Wilson.

I remember circa 2008 driving a rented car through Malibu and playing Pet Sounds. I still think of it every time I hear the Beach Boys. Their sound personified our trip.

Great album. Blame marketing for the cover.

    RIP

If it wasn't from the 60s, I'd say they were making allusions to the Beach Boys being the G.O.A.Ts.

Sad to hear of Wilson's passing but he had a good innings and lived to a good age despite heavy drug use.

Overall The Beatles are the greatest but I don’t think there can be any real debate anymore that Pet Sounds > Sgt Pepper

Saw him play the Marquee in Cork 20 years ago it was sick. He did loads of Pet Sounds, Smile and even his Christmas album. Think I caught him on a good day he must have played for 2 hours.

played Pet Sounds yesterday in memory of the great man, my favourite album of all time and I’m a huge Beatles fan. He also released a number of really good solo albums, currently listening to pier pressure. He got controversially involved with Dr Eugene Landy who depending on your point of view saved his career or exploited him.

Had a long drive today so played Pet Sounds. It's such an emotional album with unbelievable production quality.

He was 82, a good age and from what I can gather happy (at last) and in a good place.

    God only knows…

Wilson had his moments and will be remembered because of it.

Though I got to be honest I think Pet Sounds is vastly overrated. It seems to only get hype based on legend, rather than actual entertainment value.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

    #MEGA MAKE EUROPE GREAT AGAIN

I’d wager if this was 1966 you might think differently- between that album and Phil Spector’s “wall of sound” approach, America, along with the Beatles and a few others were really making inroads in terms of how music was produced and what it sounded like.

Personally I don’t believe it’s aged as well as Sgt. Peppers- but it’s place in history is secure as a major turning point in pop music

I think my first real exposure to the Beach Boys, although I was vaguely aware of them prior, was the TV series "Beach Boys, Endless Summer" when RTE showed it in 1990. I think it was on the same weeknights as Twin Peaks, but open to correction on that.

I think it put me off them for a long time as the main thing I remembered from it were the awful, middle of the road variety support acts. There was a ventriloquist with a really annoying puppet act, the puppet had a leather jacket and shades and was called "Rocco".

Anyway, I did get into the Beachboys over time.
