@moonboy52 I forgot to mention that there’s activation fees so it’s not just €12.99 each to try them.

With Clear Mobile, as others have mentioned, it seems you order the sim and the €12.99 activation covers you until the next month’s billing cycle, so now is probably a good time to join.

I think you can get a free month and a Penneys or Just Eat €10 voucher by getting a referral link also, which I’m sure someone here would give you.

With 48, its a €12.99 activation fee and €12.99pm. There’s also a referral program though which gets you credit that you could use for your next membership and a €10 Aldi, Uber or Penneys voucher. Again someone here on Boards would give you one or I can, just PM me.

So there are ways of getting around the activation fees for both.

    Just so you know.

Rather than going with Clear Mobile for 12.99/month on bill pay, why not just pop into a Vodafone store and get the 20 euro PAYG offer? It's pre-pay, unlimited and you have no worry about being overcharged or whatever else.

Need to remember VF PAYG plans are for 28 days, so that 13 payments annually, not 12.

He's only using it temporarily until he gets broadband.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 560 ✭✭✭NotShero

That’s true actually you could just get Vodafone for €20. You could also just get an unlimited 5G prepay sim in Three or eir for €20 also.

Yeah but Three and Eir's network is 💩💩💩!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,218 ✭✭✭moonboy52

Great points, folks. Really, really appreciate the input.

Maybe just paying extra, with a VF sim is the sensible way to go.

Assume having two sims is no issue. With VF already. Need to look into it.

Sorry for derailing the Clear thread ☺️

Actually you'll fine Three's network much better than Vodafone's since VF started shutting down 3G

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

In my experience no, with Three I would have full bars of 4G or 5G and have unusable speeds or no internet connection at all.

The network is way too congested with all the MVNOs operating on it, they have the most market share by far if you combine all the MVNOs that use Three's network.

It just depends on the area you are in, I’m quite happy with 48 (Three) coverage and speed.

I mean this is a perfect example of the Three network being poor, how do you have almost 300Mbps download but only 8Mbps up? If anything having a somewhat decent upload speed matters quite a bit these days if you are trying to send someone photos, videos or anything via social media. With the Three network I always struggled sending people videos.

I went back to the start of 2024 on Speedtest when I was switching from one to the other. These were the results I got at my house. So upload is just not great across the board where I am lol

I usualy have around 25 Mb/s as upload for the last 3 month that I'm now using 48 as my main internet provider in my router. I have yet to discover issues with it and I do a lot of Zoom and Teams Video.

Generally, my speed test looks like this with the MSAK test that M-Lab is doing consistently being lower which is due to it testing multi-stream tests which is a better indication than other tests.

Damn. Was just about to switch from anpost mobile but I live right on the border with NI so depending where I am I switch between here and roaming data a lot. Cant be arsed changing access point manually. An post seems to have no problem with 1 access point covering data here and UK data on Vodafone (isp.postfone.ie)...

It's literally going to settings and selecting an option once u have added it once

Im aware however it would be a pain in the hole where I live. I can walk 100 yards to the shore. Which I do regularly and the UK signal will be stronger. I drive along the shoreline of Lough Foyle into the North a lot. The UK signal is stronger depending on what part of the road Im on. Should I pull in and select the UK access point? Then pull in again to switch back? Think I'll stay with AnPost as my phone can auto select the strongest data signal.

Has anyone else run into issues using this providers SIM in a 4g or 5g router? I can't get it to work for data, after messing about with lots of APNs.

Seems to work fine in an Android phone though!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,636 ✭✭✭dohouch

    @ECookie13 I have it working 4G in tp-mr105 modem-router APN isp.clearmobile.ie

Strange, it seems very temperamental in both my 4g Tenda and 5g TCL router, never had issues with any other provider. Got it working with that APN for a while but certain things wouldn't load and support haven't a clue (prob don't want to help people using routers). Oh well, may have to go back to 48.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 584 ✭✭✭pfftdetail

Wonder if they are putting restrictions on modem usage similar to Sky Mobile.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 867 ✭✭✭ECookie13

I genuinely think this could be a real factor. It works fine on my phones, but not on any 4G/5G modem I've tried. I even tested another 4G Alcatel router — same issue. It’s possible they’ve found a way to detect this with newer SIMs 🤔. Swapped the 48 SIM back in, and it worked immediately.

Its always been possible via a number of different ways eg IMEI, Time to Live (TTL), User-Agent, traffic patterns.

Every cellular device (phone, modem, router) has a unique IMEI number. The first few digits of the IMEI identify the manufacturer and model type. So it would be very easy for the network operators to detect this.

The Clear T&Cs dont explicitly forbid this. But their general terms of service ("private, personal, and legitimate consumer purposes only") and network management clauses provide them with the justification and technical means to restrict your service if they detect usage patterns that are not consistent with a standard mobile phone plan.

This would be common enough across all networks in Ireland and sometimes it works for a period, or indefinitely for lower usage scenarios. However, if your usage becomes significant enough to be flagged by their systems, then you are probably at risk of having your service throttled or suspended altogether.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 560 ✭✭✭NotShero

Yeah as @wassie said above there is multiple ways they could know. Some routers allow you to spoof the TTL.

Is there a MAC cloning option on your router? Maybe you could put in the MAC of your phone to see if that works?

Out of curiosity, what is the best plan/network to specifically put in a router? The Wi-Fi at work is awful, and I’m tired of using my mobile hotspot as it’s causing my iPhone to overheat and drain battery very fast. I was thinking of buying a 5G router and getting a monthly plan to just put in the office.

Which network/plan lets you do this without complaining? Needs to be unlimited.
