IF Putin went full mental implosion and attacked the Baltics he’d probably launch a tactical nuke at Ukraine under some false flag pretence. That would definitely spook General bone spurs.

But, the thought of Russia, and come on… Belarus… taking on NATO is beyond the bounds of reality. Russia have only one AWACS type plane left. And with Russia so weakened Belarus is more likely to try to kick Russia out.

There used to be something like a one hour average lifespan of a tank crew if WW3 kicked off… what Russian tanks? Not going to happen, not even in Putin’s most fever ridden fantasies.

Armed forces of Ukraine's count of casualties in the forces of putin's terrorist state since attempting the full scale invasion of their country just passed the million mark:

I'll believe it if and when it happens, based on track record, Trump will just TACO out again and this is just blowhard nonsense.

Apparently Belarusian forces don't even amount to much on their own. The main value of Belarus militarily is its use as a staging post for the Russians.

Lukashenko has been cheeky about all of this, allowing the Russians to invade Ukraine via Belarus, but also trying to pretend to be a "neutral" partner by not officially adding troops. Of course, no one is fooled by this, however there really is little value in adding Belarus into the "S-M-O*" (Dramatic Lighting effect in the sky)

(* I can't help but make fun of that. How do you say you're a pro-Kremlin shill without actually saying it? "SMO" my friend)

There would however be a political / morale benefit to having Belarus officially join the War. Then the Russians could declare to world that they have an Alliance of partners…an Axis if you will…to help them in their fight.

But for sure, if they go for Suwalki, which NATO knows damned well is a target…well then…"Good Night Irene" to you Luka…

One of the prime ministers or president of one of em Baltic or Nordic countries put it really well lately it was something along lines of

“Is there by doubt we can beat Russia back?” No

“But let’s ensure we are not in that position in first place as otherwise our populations better get used to what’s happening in Ukraine happening to them, by building credible deterrence and helping Ukraine”

And I agree, the time to act is now, not when the hordes of Russian barbarian murderers, criminals and rapists are pouring into Europe and bombing cities every day

Unfortunately Trump is undermining a lot of this and it’s not hard to see a scenario where Putin takes another gamble where it costs him nothing but few more dead serfs

Yep Trump being the weak TACO he is has now enabled Russia to push ahead with its imperialism.

Putin knows Trump is weak and sees an opening.

it would be interesting to see what happens.
the US military is in joint exercises with European allies on an almost daily basis and are also very much a part of the NATO presence in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonian, Poland and Bulgaria.
it is hard to imagine those on the ground taking too kindly to being told to ignore their basic training and abandon their allies that they have trained with for decades because the CiC is a dick

Regarding an incursion into Lithuania/The Suwalki Gap, this is a very real concern in Lithuania, and its no wonder they are massively increasing their border defences, which I posted about a few weeks back… I flew into Palanga airport about 2 months ago and saw dragons teeth for the first time deployed around the airport which is about 80km from the border with Kaliningrad (an airport I've flown into about 30 times in the last 5 years). Also I'd never heard a sonic boom in my life until about a year ago… now I've heard at least 7-8!! The whole house shakes! I regularly see Eurofighter Typhoons coming and going from the local airport, as well as random American heavy metal..

    1CCC061A-8E74-42FF-9994-9D85EEAF4D25_1_105_c.jpeg

However from talking to a neighbour in Lithuania, who is reasonably well connected to high office there, he seemed fairly confident (based on conversations he's had) that they could hold off any land incursion for as long as it took for NATO reinforcements to arrive (4-8 days)(bearing in mind there are already German & American forces in country).

    IMG_5504.jpeg

I do also believe that Lithuania is possibly to be the first likely target given how close Vilnius is to the border with Belarus, and how relatively easy & quickly it 'could' be for a land invasion to reach the capitol… Vilnius is only about 90 minutes drive from Druskininkai (a beautiful spa town I have visited on many occasions, as recently as last summer), however it's pretty much all forest so no convoy of enemy troops would have an easy ride to Vilnius, but in the age of drones, everything changes!

My OH (she's Lithuanian) is quite concerned about it all, probably more so than me as I (probably misguidedly) refuse to let Russia dictate how I/we live, but I'm Irish, with no real clue… She was born into the Soviet Union.. her grandfather was in Vilnius at the TV tower in 1991 facing down the soviet tanks… The vast majority of Western Europe still don't grasp the severity of the Russia problem, Eastern Europe/The Baltics have been screaming it for years and no one listened or did anything…. then 2014 happened, then 2022 happened, and then 'some' of Western Europe woke up….

We are going (driving) in 3 weeks for about 5-6 weeks.. If the Suwalki gap is cut off, our only way out is via the Baltic Sea (luckily my neighbour above has a sailing yacht, but it's much closer to Kaliningrad than we are, in Klaipeda, Lithuania's only real sea port, so a likely initial target).

There are joint Russian/Belarusian military exercises planned for autumn close to the Lithuanian border..

When I arrive in a few weeks, I need to put some more stuff into the emergency 'grab bag'

I've a painting in the house, painted by my late father, so it's irreplaceable!! It's probably getting packed into the car when we leave this summer for home as I'd rather it wasn't there 'just in case'…

    Fun Times!

    FCUK RUSSIA.

@Manic Moran can you comment on what the protocol here would be? My assumption would be that there are standing orders that US personnel who are deployed to an allied base are to assist in the defense of their host nation if they're attacked?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,834 ✭✭✭✭AndyBoBandy

And just to point out (though I'm sure it absolutely doesn't need pointing out), but in Lithuania (and I'm sure the rest of The Baltics/Eastern Europe), they are extremely grateful for the foreign troops deployed in their countries.

4 U.S. servicemen tragically lost their lives in Lithuania back in March during a training exercise, and the public outpouring of grief was enormous. About €200k was collected from the public for their families, and Lithuania are looking to posthumously award them State Awards.

It's not lost on a lot of people from these countries that were it not for their NATO membership, as well as NATO troops deployed on their territory, they would have been 'liberated' by Russia long ago…

One possible route for an attack on Lithuania is a direct thrust from Belarus into Vilnius, according to the country's military leadership. While inspecting the newly acquired engineering equipment, Mayor Benkunskas underlined a clear objective: the road to Vilnius must not resemble a highway – it must be riddled with obstacles.

“In 2022, the mayor of Kharkiv advised us: ‘Have your own counter-mobility infrastructure. That way you’ll help the army stop a physical invasion’,” said the Vilnius mayor.

probably optimistic thinking, but Senator Lindsay Graham has been talking about a massive set of sanctions he wants to have placed on Russia. maybe that could be what Trump is referring to??

    https://www.politico.com/news/2025/06/07/lindsey-graham-russia-sanctions-bill-trade-embargo-00393297

but like others have said, I’ll believe it when I see it

It seems unlikely, the US and China just agreed a deal a couple of days ago to de-escalate the tariff war.

500% sanctions would indeed be bone crushing for Russia, but also very tough for the US. They would be effectively embargoing 36 countries, including European ones. Would Europe be comfortable responding and placing 500% sanctions on China, India etc.? Doubtful.

But more importantly, Trump said before he took power that he would force Putin to the negotiating table and pressure him to make a deal. He has done absolutely nothing of the sort.

Honestly, I have no idea the official protocol. I also have no idea where the ammo is stored.

Though given I’m at a rank where I could make that sort of decision on a local basis, were I there I’d tell my guys to get ammo from wherever, off the Lithuanians if necessary, and figure out where best to set them fighting. If it’s wrong after the fact, an old saying in the US Army is “at least you made a mistake in the direction of the enemy.” We know we’d be legally protected, we know it’s the morally correct thing to do and, frankly, I can’t imagine the opposition would be too worried about distinguishing the small flag on the uniform of the person they are shooting at, so it would be self preservation anyway.

Yes, the only end to the war will come when the Putin regime ends, have said that all along. No sign of that happening yet. But some day it has to happen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,685 ✭✭✭rogber

At the moment I don't see a solution. This will go on till either Putin or Zelensky is killed or removed in some other way and even that might not end it, just introduce a new phase. Neither side is capable of defeating the other side militarily unless something very radical changes. The situation looks hopeless and it's the Ukrainian population who will keep paying the price

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,685 ✭✭✭rogber

Is that a real quote? Reads like a total parody

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,685 ✭✭✭rogber

That gives some cause for hope, though still sounds to me a long way off from potential economic collapse. Hopefully the bad will accelerate. We'll monitor what happens

I don't think he ever explained how he'd "end the war in 1 day" etc. if IRC.

I assumed he would stiff Ukraine and he (and MAGA Republicans) believed the US had enough leverage over the situation that they could effectively pressure Ukrainian capitulation to Russia on the key issues (and so end the war that way - by gifting Putin a lot of what he wants).

Pre his election, some people posting here seemed to have a fantasy of Trump turning on Putin and backing Ukraine strongly to pressure Russia. The only support for it really was idea that Trump is quite mercurial and might be convinced/flattered to support Ukraine. All the other evidence was against it and unfortunately it's turned out much worse than I expected. We had another minor but still embarrassing and concerning "love bomb" on Russia from the Trump admin. today!

    https://www.state.gov/releases/2025/06/russia-national-day/

On behalf of the American people, I want to congratulate the Russian people on Russia Day. The United States remains committed to supporting the Russian people as they continue to build on their aspirations for a brighter future. We also take this opportunity to reaffirm the United States’ desire for constructive engagement with the Russian Federation to bring about a durable peace between Russia and Ukraine. It is our hope that peace will foster more mutually beneficial relations between our countries.

Compare that plámás to how they speak about the EU or their allies! That's a signpost on the direction of travel we're looking at for the next few years.

Edit: apologies, just noticed a poster already mentioned above US govt. statement!

@fly_agaric "I don't think he ever explained how he'd "end the war in 1 day""

He thought he'd say "I'm the big Trump. Now, knock it off" and they'd say "Yes Donald".

But it only works like that in his childish mind. He is a juvenile fantasist.

It looks like history is starting up again.

This rather suggests its an imperialistic struggle between two men rather than what it actually is. Why would zelensky being killed do anything to stop the war? He is enacting the democratic will of the people - hes there precisely because they want to keep fighting. Its not remotely comparable to Putin.

The Ukrainian population will pay a bigger price if they don't keep it up. Which they are fully aware of.
