The can of goo I have from Hyundai specifically says on it to only use with the original compressor.

There is a ioniq 6 for breaking on donedeal, I messaged them to get a price on the tire mobility kit, €110. They can keep it 😅

There is no room in ioniq 38 for a spare, and the boot is small enough as it is to have one floating around in there.

I'm after buying a tyre patch kit (€15) and a compressor and sealant kit (€20) off amazon

The goo is a last resort, but for the sake of a few quid might be handy to have the option if your really in a bind. But I did go into my local tyre place and they said they won't repair a goo'd tyre.

So I guess my order of attack would be

    • Try Just inflate to try get somewhere to repair
    • If that didn't work, Patch if possible
    • And then If I'm not in a rush, call breakdown
    • Alternatively, use the goo

What does this mean by emergency plug?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,855 ✭✭✭✭prawnsambo

It's a plug that connects to the charge port and communicates with the EV to prevent it moving or rolling away.

Read an article last week re new static speed cameras installed on various roads across the country- I think maybe 7 in total. Probably an innocent question but are there speed signs indicating them like the speed van locations? I tend to stick to the speed limits but if I come up behind a slow Joe who typically is out on the centre of the road and pass out I'm likely to be over the speed limit for the time until I can get back in lane safely and cut back to the speed limit. Any views on this? - or am I being a nervous Nellie.

I know the one on the straight N road to Ashbourne has signs up yep. Actually that is an average speed camera zone, maybe that’s what you meant

Thanks for that - more to do with signage really- if you don't know the road but there's a sign then at least it's giving you the opportunity to pay particular attention to your speed.

Top Gear update on the upcoming US$20,000 Slate truck. The first customisable, plastic-bodied EV pickup (if it is to be believed). First deliveries at least 1.5 years away

Slate Auto has explicitly stated that their vehicles and accessories will only be available for purchase in the United States.

Just returned from à Sligo/Cork return trip about 660km in total in the Born. We stayed a night in Limerick on our way down. The 8 Bay ecars charging hub at the Crescent shopping centre made it a very easy charging experience on both legs. I think if we had more of these big hubs say one at 100km in any direction spread across the country then we'd be in great shape charging wise.

Driving from the likes of Dublin to Kerry you are spoilt for choice. Hubs like Obama's, Midway and the Cresent have never been full or faulty when I've used them and fairly decent price wise

Noticed an Instavolt unit going into McDonalds in Waterford. It’s a small car park, just 16 spaces, with two of those being blue badge. Another two going to this. It’s also a busy place. I can see a lot of iceing.

OH is getting a G6 as a company car to replace his Enyaq IV 80 in a couple of months. Will miss the Enyaq - can't fault it and have really enjoyed it as the first electric car. I ended up trading in my own car for an ID.3 so now we're an all electric household.

Need to find something cheap for my mam and then my EV shopping/research days are over for a while at least!

I wonder will the Govt extend the BIK relief for EV company cars in the budget this year. Given that we've missed all our climate targets it might be an easy win for them

in terms of its imapct on number of new EVs being purchased? Perhaps but regardless it may be seen as an easy win for the govt to extend this in the budget and be seen to be at least promoting further adoption of EV's.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,086 ✭✭✭sk8board

quite a large proportion of EVs in my area are people who only have an EV because of the drop in their monthly bik. They openly tell you they wouldn’t have the EV if they had the same BIK - the small inconveniences of EV ownership are outweighed by the cost savings.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,967 ✭✭✭joe1303l

It’s the same with company car PHEV’s, most of the drivers I know don’t want them either but won’t pay the BIK on a diesel.

the more choices like this are made, the more second hand Evs will trickle onto the market.

imagine if there was an incentive for car rental companies to have Evs in their fleet, but there isnt, so 1000s of ICEs are being purchased and released onto the second hand market every year from car hire companies with next to no Evs

(as a car hire customer though, I am more than happy theres no Evs in their fleets, and long may it continue. I dont need to waste an hour or 2 charging a car at the end of a holiday before returning it, or getting a hefty fee as you couldn't manage it, compared to 2 minutes at a petrol station)

The Transport Minister conceded the government won’t hit the target of one million electric vehicles on the road by 2030.

Holy **** the govt have woken up to what we were saying 5 years ago.

With that being said the new target is now 600,000 EVs by 2030. Current best estimate fleet is roughly 73,000 as of last November, that leaves a shortfall of 527,000 to be made up over the 5 years between 2025 and 2030, or 105,400 EVs per year… Good luck with that new target

You're talking about the ICE rule that you normally have to bring a car back to the rental place fully refueled I presume? That rule is there because most rental companies can't easily refuel ICE vehicles on site… EVs shouldn't have that same restriction from car rental companies

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,666 ✭✭✭✭josip

Agree that they shouldn't. But given that renters are already used to the idea of return full or be fined, I can see rental agencies being reluctant to let go of this nice little profit earner for them.

Given the EU's emissions limits on new cars they won't have a choice but to change their tactics in a few short years. They should also be supported to buy the things in the first place.

I rented in US an EV and Hertz required to return car with 80% or more charge. This was only downside as I had to plan going to charger before airport. That can be annoying as I you need a place close enough to airport to arrive there with still 80% and location to have plenty of chargers to make sure you are not stuck in queue and stressing about missing flight.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,086 ✭✭✭sk8board

as someone who rents a lot of cars and does a splash and dash nearby the drop-off, that’s honestly sounds like an absolute ball-ache.

Related to that, someone had a model 3 at the office yesterday, driving it around purely to keep the 12v charged as it hadn’t been rented for so long. it’s from one of the big rental company’s who had the M3’s for American’s over here for a while and wanting the same car as they have back home - and now they are lying idle apparently. The daily rate son them is far to high, so that will be a big reason too

Checking Ryanair car hire for the last weekend of June, Pickup/Dropoff in Stansted, Friday-Sunday Hertz are showing a Polestar 2 or a Jeep Avenger for less than €70 for the weekend. Like-for-like charge

Plethora of charging options in the area according to Plugshare

  • Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 18,194 Mod ✭✭✭✭slave1

Teslas automatically keep the 12v topped up from the DC battery and if it's a newer model there is no 12v anymore, it's a Lithium Ion battery so not as prone to dying and again topped up whenever needed.

Driving the tesla to charge the 12v is a waste of time, there no alternator so whether driving it or leaving it parked is the exact same thing

I've had a similar experience booking an EV in Italy, e2008 and Polestar 2 were generally cheaper than the equivalent automatic ICE

A manual Fiat 500 was cheaper obviously but not the most practical option for trucking the family plus suitcases around
