It's not open discussion if you're putting lots of people on ignore.

And there won't be open and flowing discussion if posters are free to cripple the discussion with low level trolling, insults, off topic derailments, hate speech etc
It'll just be two sides on soap boxes.

What Trump says and what he does are not necessarily the same thing.

In fact most of what he says is absolute bluster.

Trump saying outlandish things is about flooding the zone, about distraction and about provoking outrage amongst the left.

Looking at the Trump thread it is working to a tee.

Anyone who doesnt agree with the hive mind that Trump is going to do these outlandish and far fetched things is rounded on and abused.

How many times do people have to be wrong before they realise that their views may not be the realistic or correct ones.

What's wrong with putting people on ignore? I find it incredibly useful and it means I see a lot less abuse, bigotry and demented nonsense. The site would become even worse without it.

Surely if you hate the Trump thread this much, you'd stop posting in it, no?

It is one thing if you're putting a couple of posters on ignore.
But think of all the posters who have been banned from a forum \ thread over time.

If you're in a largely unmoderated forum (as was suggested and I disagree with) - then what's the solution, put all of them on ignore instead of relying on moderation?
So their content will be on the forum, you won't see it, but you will see replies from posters who do engage with them.

Then it is not much of a discussion forum.

    I largely have done.

I pop in every so often to see if things may have improved but if anything its getting worse.

    Its a vipers nest.

It's not. You know you can't get it shut down so you're posting guff like this. If you don't like it, ignore it. I don't post in the trans threads and I don't have any interest in having them shut down for that or any other reason.

I dont want it shut down, I never have.

I'd just like a bit of fairness and objectivity in discussing Trumps Presidency but that wont happen.

Define "fairness and objectivity" in this context please.

The site would become an entirely demented car crash without moderation.

Maybe some parts could still function, but anything about a "lively" topic would eventually - or quickly - become torture.

If you want a look at what can happen. Look at the trans thread from the week before last. It wasn't unmoderated, but it was fairly hands off for a while. Becomes people pointlessly bickering into the void with each other: this is what happens.

That the mods keep doing what they are doing, banning trolls, those who are being a dick, who engage in personal abuse, who attack the poster not the post, those spreading hate speech, not engaging in discussion just dumping links etc
I want to be able to engage with the forum content not have to put dozens of posters on ignore.

As opposed to the suggestion of a largely unmoderated forum where they would be free to post away and engage in all those tactics, and imo threads would quickly descend into a mess with very little actual discussion.

You and others were well capable of spreading conspiracy theories.

The primary one being Joe Biden was sharp as a tack, and running the country.

He wasnt going to be stood down and replaced by Kamala Harris.

    No siree.

This does read more like annoyance over the fact that most posters can't stand Trump. You can't force people to like him or support him. I'd also say it's largely pretty sanitized given the extent of his conduct.

I think this post by Archfi sums up the American politics threads well and its actually not a bad proposal.

It isn't. It's just the pathetic "both sides" trope again.

There have been countless attempts by pro-Trump posters (who incidentally cause almost all of the problems) to shut down criticism of their idol. None of these have been entertained thankfully.

Why are you keeping an archive of images to dump? What is the point of that?

All bluster? I take it then that he:

Hasn't set up ICE to put fear in the heart of immigrants, no?

Didn't allow Elon Musk to set up DOGE, no?

Hasn't absolutely torpedoed the United State's standing on the international stage, no?

Hasn't been systematically removing reference to war veterans because they're not the right colour because 'DEI', no?

Hasn't started dismanting the Deparment of education, no?

If all the above is just bluster I must be living in a parallel universe.

Trump is not the topic here, so any discussion of him ends now.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 16,114 ✭✭✭✭Arghus

Maybe a good lot of us don't want to read and partake in that kind of discussion.

Edit: In fairness, perhaps I misunderstood the proposal. About a separate "hands off" thread.... Can't see that working tbh.

Yep entirely hands off descends into Twitter or 4chan tbh.

Just one suggestion for the sports forum would it be possible to cut down on the constant negative comments on TV commentators?

I don't post much in the forum but follow event threads and it's the same across the board there are so many posts who just want to have a dig.

Just to give a broad example a F1 race thread there will be multiple posts about how much they hate X Y Z.

Maybe each of the more popular sports could have a dedicated thread to discuss commentators and keep it from live events?

Great point, and it's normally a lot of "Joey Barton" energy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,153 ✭✭✭Pauliedragon

This can be annoying. It's not hard to simply ignore a commentator. I'd also add the constant "This ref is always biased against my team" nonsense. How many times you see a match on and supporters from both sides saying the same thing about the ref.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 58,511 ✭✭✭✭Necro

Soccer incorporates commentators, managers, referees and players into a 'no abuse' rule under the charter. Maybe something for the local mods to consider.

Taking the F1 example (since I follow some of the discussion there), I wouldn't consider it a big issue. For sure there are some unfavourable comments against commentators (and I'm guilty of that, especially when Danica Patrick is on duty 🙃). But I wouldn't consider the posts abusive or a big disruption to the discussion - certainly not at soccer level.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Sorry I am not trying to claim the posts are abusive they just disrupt the flow of the thread.

Back to the example of the F1 race thread I am reading it to get updates and interesting information.

A poster comes along with "I hate Crofty etc." it derails the thread and adds no value to the discussion.

It can be a turn off to other posters constantly seeing this negative kind of posting.

If there was a dedicated thread for moaning about commentators it could just clean it up a lil.

That rule is such BS, as are a lot of the rules, "like don't be a d1©k".

I reported a post attacking me a few days ago, citing numerous rules that it transgressed. I see posts get warned for nothing, like "uncivil" being the offense. I reported it, again, saying it was uncivil, which it was. Several times, in fact. I asked for an explanation if nothing was being done about it, could I please get an explanation as to why not.

Did I get a response? Ya, right! And the post is still there. Mods can use their own bias and interpretation of the rules.

Rugby threads are full of that too. Nearly after every penalty or contentious tackle there us a big discussion on the referee.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,898 ✭✭✭aero2k

I actually think that's a good rule, or at least it would be if it was applied consistently. But a mod made the offending post.…the same mod that I was warned in CA for referring to his posting history. Go figure.
