SEAI Heating Control Grant

I recently had my entire house (1960s build) replumbed, which included adding heating zones—three in total. I decided to apply for the SEAI heating controls grant and just found out there's an inspection scheduled for next week.

The plumber I used is an older guy with a strong dislike for SEAI. I had to really talk him into registering so I could even apply for the grant.

Now that I’ve read through some of the SEAI documentation, I’m seeing a couple of potential issues:

    1. One of the thermostats is located in a room where all the radiators have TRVs. I specifically requested this setup because it’s a large, open-plan area and I wanted full control of the heating in that space.
    2. The immersion heater has dual inputs—oil and electric. The electric side isn't on a timer, just a manual switch. I did install a Shelly switch for automation, but I’m not sure SEAI will accept that as compliant.

At this point, I’m half tempted to cancel the grant altogether. I'm not sure it’s worth the hassle of failing the inspection, having to bring trades back in, making changes, and going through re-assessment.

Is anyone here familiar with SEAI inspections and able to share any insights or advice?

    No experience with SEAI,

With the room with trv they could just be replaced with blank/dummy caps?

I understand why the thermostat room is supposed to be open because they could be set low but the thermostat is always calling for heat that will never come.

And blanking caps is no different to a normal rad valve that could be turned off.

I Don't understand the second issue,

An immersion is electric, it isn't connected to the oil at all, or are you talking about the actual hot water tank? The oil is through an internal coil, and the immersion is an electric element in the tank.

I do think the SEAI do want it to be on a countdown timer though so it "can't be left on"

I wouldn't cancel the grant if you have all the work done, cancelling would be the same as failing an inspection and doing nothing to remedy

What's the value of the grant

I was thinking about blank caps alright.

My mistake, I meant the hot water tank. It was two elements as you said, an oil internal coil and an electric coil.

    The grant is 750.

So the oil part is fine, immersion, maybe.

Will the manual switch just be an isolator eg always on and the immersion controlled by the shelly?

I think shelly can be setup to turn off after x minutes. And if that is the main control for it will be the shelly that should satisfy it.

Worst case the immersion switch to be switched for a timer switch.
