You're not allowed call anyone a liar,(which I assume includes calling them dishonest?) even when they lie about your post, I was given 2 warnings for this, while the poster that lied, continued posting 🤷

Why not state the post in question is untrue and provide supporting links or an argument for why that is a case. Calling somone a liar is a personal insult.

From a mod point of view (not a CA mod mind you) I would say that is attacking the poster and not the post. If you can show that the post is dishonest, attack that with evidence and it would have a much higher effect in a discussion

    "You're a liar/dishonest"

    versus

"I never said that. What I actually said was..."

    That's the difference.

I get the distinction, thanks. Someone called me dishonest, I reported the post, and to my knowledge no action was taken.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭aero2k

    That was my understanding alright.

Someone called me dishonest. I asked them to withdraw the allegation but they didn't.

Yep, that's my understanding. I understood it to be a personal attack by the poster in question.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 2,754 ✭✭✭aero2k

Actually, that's a pretty good synopsis of the to and fro: the poster said I had said something that I hadn't said, I clarified how and why the part of my post in question wasn't referring to them (in fact I wasn't quoting anyone, I had used inverted commas to make the sentence read properly), then they called me dishonest.

At this stage it might be better if a mod, or admin, goes in and deletes that line, or paragraph, from Niamh’s post.

It seems to be, more, the opinion of the previous ‘powers that be’ and removing it would mean less scope for reporting, or complaints.

I picked up a warning just a few days ago when a poster claimed I had said something and I said ‘that is a lie’.
i didn’t call him a liar, I attacked the post. He had every chance to back it up or withdraw.

The mod said he hadn’t time to look at the context but simply asking the poster to back it up would have taken the same time as it took to apply the warning and type the on thread warning and resulted in a fairer outcome.

Sorry Francie, but that's not exactly true. I seen that post while reading the politics forum.

You followed up your that's a lie with

"Why are you doing this, can you not debate without telling lies?"

Do you think that's is not calling someone a liar?

I will never understand why people can't simply say "this is not accurate" or "this is not correct" instead of "this is a lie". It's not (or at least it shouldn't be) that hard...

It’s attacking the post in question and it wasn’t the first time that poster did it.

If you can’t see that shooting the whistleblower is wrong then I despair tbh.
All it takes for a moderator to do, who is intervening anyway, is to use his bold text to ask the poster to back up their claim.

If they don’t, they get the warning, and we move on, if they do, I get the warning and we move on. No extra work for the mod and a fair outcome.

Could do with deleting the line beginning "From the inception of Boards..." as well tbh,

what is wrong with calling something what it is?

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 7,845 Mod ✭✭✭✭Irish Aris

Fair enough if this is your thought process, you shouldn't be surprised though if a mod actions that.

@Esel (a non mod) put it best above. Attack the post, not the poster.

You could have written the rest of the post without the comment that I highlighted, it then probably wouldn't have been actioned, but you didn't, the line that you wrote is an attack on the poster and not the post.

There was absolutely no need to add in that line which directly attacks the poster, and that's wherein the issue lies.

They dont have the same meaning overall.

This google AI text summarises it but you will find similiar in any definition.

Calling something a lie implies a deliberate deception, a statement made with the intent to mislead. In contrast, inaccurate information suggests a factual error or a mistake, not necessarily an intentional attempt to deceive. Here's a more detailed breakdown:

    • Lie:A deliberate falsehood, a statement made knowingly to be false, often with the intention of deceiving someone.
    • Inaccurate:A statement that is not entirely correct, may be due to a lack of knowledge, a misunderstanding, or mistake

if someone is posting that poster X said something but can't back that up with a reference, that isnt advancing the duscussion and can be used as a 'being a dick' move and the mods should be vigilant of such conduct.

It’s semantics at the end of the day. Semantics that lets somebody off the hook and punishes the whistleblower.

    Thank you @odyssey06

This is one of my biggest issues with the site:

Most people's default position is that everything is deliberate and very few people are willing to give the benefit of the doubt that someone may have misunderstood or may have been misinformed.

It makes for a very hostile environment and lessens the quality of any discussion.

Could a mod critique the alternative way of dealing with it when it arises, thst I suggested?
Are you interested in running the place fairly?

But i consider a lie an attack on me.

If you can’t see how somebody doing it not once but repeatedly is toxic to a forum you’ll never improve the place.
The very first intervention should be ‘’back it up poster or withdraw’. Simple.

  • Moderators, Business & Finance Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators, Paid Member Posts: 58,423 Mod ✭✭✭✭Necro

Then report the post, explain why and don't respond to them instead of getting yourself into trouble.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79,454 ✭✭✭✭FrancieBrady

I have done but it doesn’t stop it.
I was told somebody reported my reply.
Same amount of time involved for the mod - agreed?

So why not use his bold text on the post and ask the person making the claim to

    1. Please back up ypur claim
    2. Or withdraw it.

If neither happens - warning issued to the poster making the claim.

If 1 happens - poster calling it a lie gets the warning.

Nobody can call that outcome unfair.

You are forum banned from posting in CA. You are not long back from a holiday from the politics forum.

A pure time sink of moderation time as was stated by mods before.

The reason it's quiet is to see a poster like this is to see a posts like this get onto another thread whing about moderations.

Stating facts is not attacking the poster it's discussing the topic.

This is a feedback thread so context is important.
