You weren't going to get it with those stats. As I said very poor. We needed a massive display and that was not going to happen with all the positive Bz during the day killing off the energy and the deteriorating Bt as the CME left the building.

Of course the Bz went south after our sunrise this morning favouring North America again but IMF has weakened a lot so we're not missing out on anything. It'd be a decent display with darker skies from autumn to early spring but it's summer now so if we are to get aurora, we rely on a massive display comparable to May 2024 to push through the twilight. For the next week or so, we also have an increasingly bright moon in the skies.

Australia and New Zwaland got a good show, thanks to the time difference, where it was dark when things were cooking.

They're also in winter and have actual darkness unlike us.

Looks like another CME has hit renewing chances but much of the country clouded out for our window of relative dark skies. Maybe something in the northwest in the next 2 hours.

Unreal scene in the Netherlands this morning caught by Corne Ouwehand. Aurora, noctilucent clouds and bioluminescence all in one shot.

Current red warning. Think it’s the highest reading I’ve seen 879.5nT. Red warning starts at 200nT.

Gets dark at 01:28 - which lasts till 01:48 … chuck in the 85-100% cloud cover and the level of solar activity might as well be zero.

M2.7 flare facing earth earlier today released a CME that will reach earth by Monday night according to latest model forecasts. G2 to G4 status expected based on its speed and structure with the return of nationwide aurora chances on Monday evening but waits to be seen closer to the time.

Very active sun at the moment thanks to 4724.

Two Earth directed CMEs associated with X flares already well on the way and a big X5 a few hours ago.

Should be a good chance of G3 storming from the first two and then we await predictions of the X5.

Needs some clear nights however !

EDIT: Just catching NOAAs update there. Not totally earth directed but very fast moving CME, could arrive as early as tonight and increase the levels to G4.

EDIT 2: Actually overnight tonight looks pretty clear and good. But not sure on the timings. We have three CMEs on the way, the first two were estimated tonight and into tomorrow, but now this new one is also possible by tonight into tomorrow. So we could have quite the cannibal effect?

Yeah its looking like tonight is the best night weather wise for viewing. Hopefully it hits early in the night before moon rise but even if it hits later in the night the Aurora should still be visible before dawn.

It could be the weekend before we get anymore clear skies and if theres any more cme's they might not be earth directed as the sunspot will be facing away from earth.

    Yes the moon not great.

Based on chatter online, an estimation arrival speed of ~20 h means arrival early tomorrow morning around 6am.

Re: the NOAA update. While they usually speak in UTC, when they said possibly impact of the big X5 tonight before midnight, it means in North America. So that is a lot less promising for us in terms of the big one unleashed today.

The possible double cme from both X1 flares are forecast to hit after midnight tonight UTC.

I'd be surprised if the cme from the X5 flare hits before daylight tomorrow. There may be some clear spells tomorrow night in the south of the country if it hits later in the day, I hope i don't jinx it.

Looks like we have the two CMEs impacted now? Bt and Bz really quite impressive.

Should start storming soon. Great clear skies out there.

EDIT: I suppose maybe it's just chatter that the second CME also arrived. Not officially detected it seems but the secondary spike in the plots suggests it has? Beyond my interpretation abilities anyway. If this is still only the first and the second is yet to arrive, damn.

So from a brief watch outside, and other similar pictures and reports on the Aurora Ireland Facebook, looks like we got treated to some 'proton aurora', rather than the usual one we are accustomed to. Basically proton auroras typically appear as random blobs of aurora, rather than the classic big green/red etc. banding.

No big show though, HP30 went all the way up to 8 at one stage so it was a handsome storm.

For my patience, saw a couple of shooting stars and one particular incredible fireball I got to witness!

EDIT: As I'm typing this, standard aurora finally kicking off around Ireland, but I'm off to bed.

Yes I stayed up for punishment!

Strong naked eye red aurora in Dublin. Once or twice threatened to break out with some pulsing white pillars appearing to the naked eye but quickly would wane back to just a red glow that went from strong to weak and back again. Done well given the light pollution.

Saw another really impressive meteoroid. This one made a classic neon blue glare amongst the sky and clouds.

What luck to get to see it tonight as I was out with my big binoculars already

Have been looking at the same over Drogheda, and some whitish pillars fading in and out.

A few shots of last night's display at the Great South Wall, Dublin.

Wanted to replicate the extraordinary success of October 2024 I had here at this location but messed up my shots by rushing. This time, the event started too late and the auroral oval needed to be directly overhead to get it more in line with Poolbeg Lighthouse. By the time it did, the oval was bending over North America where it was seen to the south. Here it was never that extreme but the reds were very bright and easily naked eye visible. Also a lone proton aurora early on.
