I think the biggest thing that will go against them is that they are the hunted now and not the hunters. Were underdogs in the semi and final last year and probably thrived on that status so will be a different kettle of fish this time.

But yeah definitely the team to beat.

Armagh I can understand, but I think we need to see more of Kerry against proper opposition to determine where they really are.

And they might not meet that proper opposition until the SF.

They have had to deal with some disrespect in the aftermath of their win though. Lots of people calling them one of the worst teams to win an All Ireland, that Galway blew it/should have won, etc etc. Even though they won the competition fair and square, some of the discourse around it afterwards wasn't very serious. I'd imagine they may still feel like they have a point to prove to people who think that their win last year was some fluke or only happened because Galway shat the bed.

They won it fair and square. You can only beat what's in front of you.

It could also be stated that having won it there is less pressure on them this year and they can express themselves much better.

Agreed, Kerry haven't had a competitive game to date and in both matches against a poor Cork outfit have looked downright awful for extended periods.

I still think Donegal are a more rounded team. Not much in it between them and Armagh though.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

They got loads of jam last year Armagh in a few games not just one. They have gone up a notch this year though.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

Maybe that last 5% that teams didn't apply themselves against Armagh before because they didn't have a track record of getting done, will be applied this time around. And that could be crucial.

    Gunning for Donegal myself.

I don't know if I'd say they won at a canter- better team and deserved win. But Dublin had 17 wides and gave away three needless points for breaching the 4 on 3 rule. On another day with better decision making and more clinical in attack Dublin would have won by a few. I don't think Kerry would let Armagh away with that performance today.

Armagh barely had to get out of third gear. Dublin were appalling.

"If they'd scored all those ones they missed they would have won" is a bit of a daft arguement.

This is the obvious venue for Monaghan v Down, as Louth have no pitch, unless the ground is needed for something else.

An Armagh- Kerry semi final is a possibility this year again as Armagh would not be drawn against Galway, Donegal, Dublin or Derry.

dont watch the Sunday game much. Since when have the panelists stopped wearing three piece suits?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,229 ✭✭✭talla10

Well not really- I did point out the needless 3 points gifted to Armagh for breaching the 4 on 3 rule. That simply shouldn't happen at this level and had a massive impact during a 5 point game. Armagh were the better team and deserved to win no question- I just don't think they romped home in the manner some here claim and against better opposition they may become unstuck.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,873 ✭✭✭EagererBeaver

They didn’t romp home because they didn’t have to, Dublin made sure of that. Armagh have plenty more in them than was on show there today. Nobody is suggesting they’re unbeatable or light years ahead of the pack.

Armagh have always had a strange style

They can beat anyone, but they'll never hammer anyone. If they were playing a. D4 team today like Leitrim or Longford, they would still only have won by 4 or 5 points.

They generally don't run up big winning margins, it's not their style and never has been really.

Not sure when exactly but it's for the better. It looked a bit silly. I remember Eamon OHara a good few years back wearing a beige 3 piece and matching crocodile boots.

The reason the panelists do not have tge style is new clothing from a couple if years back us they used to get a lot of clothing from retailers who used to then advertise what was worn by the panelist on the Sunday Game. RTE stopped the panelist accepting gifts for advertising

It's funny every team now has lost a game bar kerry.

Nobody expects all the games to be shown on rte but surely a game on Saturday and one on Sunday would not have been too much to ask for

Only Armagh are sure to be in the last 8. Their opponents Galway may get some advantage from that. Boyles are making Galway favourites. Paddy Power is not displaying any odds for that match that I can see. There are no dead rubbers, but the betting indicates that the 4 to be eliminated will be Mayo, Derry, Cork and Clare. The value bet for me is 13/5 on Down to beat Monaghan in a straight shootout for top of the group.

    The outrights Monday 02 June.

    Paddy Power. Kerry 9/4. Armagh 10/3. Donegal 6/1. Tyrone 7/1. Dublin & Galway 15/2. Monaghan 17/1. Derry & Mayo 25/1. Cavan, Down, Meath 66/1. Cork & Louth 80/1. Roscommon 100/1. Clare 500/1.

    Boyles. Kerry 9/4. Armagh 10/3. Donegal 9/2. Tyrone 8/1. Dublin & Galway 9/1. Mayo 16/1. Monaghan 25/1. Derry 50/1. Roscommon 80/1. Down & Louth 100/1. Cavan & Meath 125/1. Cork 200/1. Clare 1000/1.

I'm not impressed by the provincial link to the All Ireland. Next year 8 finalists will drawn at home against 8 league qualifiers in Round 1. No difference in winning or losing the finals!

Donegal v DERRY, Donegal v MONAGHAN, Tyrone v CAVAN, Armagh v TYRONE, Meath v DUBLIN, Kerry v CORK and Galway v ROSCOMMON this year had no impact on All Ireland qualification.

Kildare v Westmeath and Louth v Kildare were the only stand out contests for All Ireland qualification. We've seen how the kick outs going beyond the arc have created contests. There has to be more head to head contests for All Ireland qualification.

Straightforward solution is two rounds of qualifiers using league seeding for byes and seeded draws. In the seven games highlighted above, the losers would have a potential banana skin qualifier round or two to get through.

I dont know. We have no idea where Kerry are or what they will be like when the proper heat comes on and when proper teams double up on DC. They have effectively been playing in Div 2 and 3 since the league and have have only needed to get out of second gear in patches.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,898 ✭✭✭robbiezero

I think the format might be the reason for that. In the first game you have 4 provincial final losers playing at home who are particularly vulnerable. Even the provincial winners have to come down and focus and waiting in the wings are the likes of Tyrone and Dublin etc with a point to prove.

The situation is almost the reverse then in the 2nd round. The likes of Donegal, Galway, Mayo etc now have to fight to stay in the competition and the likes of Dublin and Tyrone have to come down from huge away wins.

That might be a bit convoluted and possibly pure shite, but I do think there is something in it.

Kerry will be very hard to beat. Perhaps if it was the old rules, you still wouldn't be sold on them. But they have a fairly workman like midfield who are doing fairly well and up front, they are by far the best set of forwards left in the competition. Kerry for me and a punters shout for armagh donegal after that. Nobody else can win it imo.

You should be even less impressed with the link between the League and the AI. Derry lost 6 and drew 1, but they still qualified for the AI. And if they beat Dublin and Galway beats Armagh, that will dump Dublin out of the AI.

Things like that can happen when straight knockout is abandoned in favour of more games. But any proposal to Congress to break the link from the Provincials to the AI series would fail.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,898 ✭✭✭robbiezero

I think Dublin can take a fair bit out of last night even though they were incredibly sloppy and Armagh still have work to do, I don't really buy the 3rd gear thing.

Dublin did very well on kickouts and comfortably had the better of Armagh in this respect and normally that platform of primary possession should win the game but for the poor shooting. They were able to get shots away very easily and I think if they had focused on just taking 1 pointers likes they did in the first quarter they would have been much closer.

Con to come back is huge too. They could have a big say in this AI yet, but may need a kind draw.

You could be right. The home away "anomaly" just occured to me on the way home from a match yesterday. I had not seen it mentioned anywhere else, but it probably was. The Sunday Game highlighted it last night, including "my" stat about all four home losses in Group 1. Maybe someone there reads this thread😀
