Just wondering if anyone else pondered whether stone circles were painted?

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

This is one of the Athgreany stones, I had to change brightness and contrast to see features on the stone, then when I considered the colour change I thought of paint or other colouring effects of the Bronze Age.

Hi cfuser, interesting thought, there is a stone up the Comeraghs that is painted white I believe, looking lime washed, I don’t know who « started it «  and when. https://www.komoot.com/highlight/2991478

The farmer has now closed off all access to the Athgreaney stone circle, totally gutted,

looks like the style over the fence has been removed, as had the tourist sign pointing to the circle, hedging has been planted in front of the fence too, so in 5 years there will be no sign there is anything there at all.

Have you a link to the Google street view of the sign? That might be an issue for the local council.

If you search Athgreaney stone circle on Google maps you will see my comment and pictures.

Might be worth reporting to the council. And if there's a suggestion it has been altered that could be an issue for national monuments.

I reported it to the National Monuments Service, waiting now to see what happens.

I wonder what power they have to enter land if there's a suspicion of damage.I suspect not much.

This action by the landowner highlights a significant issue. It’s the fact that access to the vast majority of national monuments is entirely dependent on the goodwill of the landowner.
If a landowner wants to stop people from entering his or her property - as has happened in Athgreany - then there is absolutely nothing the general public can do. Unless of course, interested parties take a case against the landowner. I think that would be very unlikely to achieve anything.
Sadly, the presence of a national monument does not confer a right of access through private land.
